Shaq Fu. This game is a fighting game about Shaquille O'Neil. If that doesn't sound like a totally ridiculous idea, then I don't know what does. I'll see how this game stacks up.
Graphics:They're not that bad.
The graphics aren't bad for Genesis standards. The backgrounds are animated, the fighters are animated decently(well, at least most of them) , and most of the fighters don't look really bad. I may just be underestimating the Genesis, though.
+Doesn't look bad
+Backgrounds are animated
-Genesis fighting games can easily be better than this graphically
Sound:The first low point.
The music is annoying, and uses the same sound a LOT. As in, almost EVERY SINGLE SONG. And this sound is annoying, too. The sound effects are nothing to get wild about, in fact, you may not notice them much as you're playing.
-Music sounds bad, and is really annoying
-Bad, overused sound is another blemish on the soundtrack
-Sound effects probably won't be noticed much
Addictiveness:You won't be rushing back to play this anytime soon.
The game probably won't be very addicting, mostly because of the music and the gameplay. I somehow find myself drawn to it, though. If you're the right kind of person, you'll enjoy this game. Otherwise, you'll despise it.
Story:Really weird, and somewhat cliché.
So, the plot is that Shaq is wandering around Tokyo before his next big game, and he steps into a dojo. There's an old man there, who tells him he's the one from the stars, and sends him through a portal to the "second world" to rescue a boy named Nezu.
First off, why is Shaq the chosen one? Couldn't they have picked someone with some actual fighting skills? And why do you have to rescue Nezu? Is the villain going to use him to destroy the world? Is the villain going to use his life energy to power his resurrection? None of this is explained. Top-notch writing, guys. Too bad there weren't any 12-year olds standing nearby to say "That's a really stupid idea.".
-Story is sorta cliché
-"Second World"? Seriously?
-Some crucial parts missing from this story
Depth:It has more depth than Dark Castle, at least.
There isn't much depth to be found in Shaq Fu. Let's see, there are 3 modes...
Story-Just your story mode. Wander around the world map, fight enemies in certain locations, sometimes find bonus fights, and beat the game. Yawn, I say.
Duel-A one or two player series of fights that goes on until you die. Kinda like story mode, except there's no world map, you can pick a character, and you can have a second player.
Tournament-This mode is for a tournament, and whatever characters are against who, two players have to play. There's no computer player option this time around. Kinda like SSBB, except a lot worse and you can only have 8 participants.
And that's the modes. Not much to do in this game, huh?
-Only 3 similar modes? Come on, there are a lot of fighting games that have more than that. Even Slaughter Sport has 2 modes, and they're both different.
-Tournament mode has no CPU option
Gameplay:Not too much fun compared to many other games on the Genesis.
I explained the modes, so I'll focus on the fighting. The fights take place on a flat plane. No obstacles, no pits, heck, not even slight elevation! But, this game is better off without obstacles, so that's not much of a problem. The real problems set in when you try to control your character. You move around slowly, and you jump about at least 10 feet in the air and you go about 20-30 feet. So, you either can move really, really slow, or you can cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time at the cost of control. You can run, but you do so by pressing A while Forward is being held down. This isn't the easiest to figure out unless you just flail on the controller or try to do a special move.
Also, almost
every single character has faster attacking animation than Shaq. This means that you can attack first and still get hit first. This is a real problem, because unless you use a certain cheat which may not even work, you have to play as Shaq.
The special moves are also really, really hard to pull off. Not because they're complex, but because the game has problems with recognizing them. Say, you try to do Shaq's Shaq-uriken move. It requires you to press Forward+Back+Forward+A. You have to press Forward+Back+Forward+Release Forward+Quickly press A. If you don't time it right, either you'll run instead of doing a Shaq-uriken, or you'll wait too long and do nothing when you press A. This is a problem when the enemies are still beating you up while you're wasting your time pressing buttons. They can execute special moves
instantly, which means they can projectile-spam, combo, and all that good stuff while you're stuck memorizing the timing for the combinations. I still haven't been able to hit an enemy with the Inferno Kick. Plus, roster balance issues just add to the problems. The only reason this game is really difficult is because the enemies don't have to deal with the controls. Great job, guys. Just awesome.
-Special moves have to be timed, or you're not going to perform them right
-Enemies have faster attacking animation, or at least it seems like it
-The A button has a lot more function than is indicated in the Options menu. You can shield yourself(this game's equivalent to blocking) by pressing Down+A. You can also run by pressing Forward+A.
-Enemies have AI so that on Easy, you can trap them in a corner and kick them to death, and on any difficulty above Easy, they will combo you.
-If you have a 3-button controller, you have to switch between the functions of the X,Y, and Z buttons, and the A,B, and C buttons by pressing Start. This is clunky, and unnecessary.
So, let's recap:
Pros:
The graphics are fine. That's the only good thing about this game that I could find.
Cons:
Everything else.
If you have this game:There's a certain website that is dedicated to destroying every copy of this game in existence. Donate it to that website, you're fueling a good cause. If you have the game on Vizzed, sell it. For most people, that few
Viz is worth more than this game.
Overall Rating:Bad
