Famine spreads in Somalia

Comments?

Brief Preview

NAIROBI, Kenya — The United Nations announced on Monday that Somalia’s famine had spread to a sixth area within the country, with officials warning that 750,000 people could die in the next few months unless aid efforts were scaled up.

While a fair portion of the famine is attributable to the drought, I think the biggest problem that can to be dealt with is Al-Shabaab. The article provided says that Southern Somalia is the epicenter of the famine, and the link below should show that Al-Shabaab occupies most of the southern areas. I am not saying that the famine in Somalia is correlated with the terrorist group's occupation on a 1 to 1 basis, but their continued refusal to allow aid because many organizations are Christian-based or different political agendas must be dealt with.

"Al-Shabab insurgents have prevented thousands of people fleeing famine-struck parts of Somalia from reaching humanitarian assistance in Mogadishu, trucking them instead to a makeshift camp 50km south of the capital, where aid is severely limited." I must say I am ever so thankful that I live in this much more fortunate country. The current state of Somalia does have a greater affect though on even distant nations.

That's pretty serious. Somalia is getting a bit serious, especially to those who care the most. I find it a bit startled to find out what might happen next.
