I have my share of watching both of the shows and I enjoy watching them.

OK, after watching my fill of both these shows, I deem Survivorman the winner in the "I am a crazy foreigner trying to survive in the wilderness" contest. Sure, Bear from "Man vs. Wild" is a former British SAS operative and has climbed Everest. Sure, in one episode Bear drinks moisture squuezed from elephant poop. But, there is always this sense of Man vs. Wild being completely setup for TV. The biggest problem that detracts from Man vs. Wild? The camera crew. You see, Les (aka "Survivorman")Les gets dropped off in remote locations by himself. He carries upwards of 50lbs of camera gear by himself. And he shoots all his own video -- which really means that if you see him walking into the distance, he's walked it at least twice! (Once to get it on video, once to pick up the camera). If you see Les climbing up a steep hill? He's done it twice, once to set up the camera, once more to pick up the camera. You get the idea. Les is crazy. Both guys have eaten things that make my stomache churn watching (the aforementioned moisture from elephant poop, rats, mice, rabbits, snails, conch, bats, live snakes, etc). Ick. Both know how to survive in the wild. And both go days without food. But, Les. That Les, he is the man. He does it all by himself. Sure, Bear says that the camera crew doesn't help him out. That maybe true, but the crew still detracts from the authenticity of "a crazy foreigner trying to survive in the wilderness". And that's why Survivorman is the winner in my books.

What about you guys. Who do you think is the winner?

I don't like either. I hate both. I mean to say is, why would they go and do this? your odds of actually having to do these is a 1:50000 ratio

Speedic : That is true, but you never know that it could happen and they are giving you the knowledge of how to survive if you ever get yourself caught in that situation. Of course these shows are mainly for knowledge and entertainment, but it never hurts to know how to survive if need be.

I totally agree with the winner, which is Survivorman! I found Man VS Wild to be fun and active, but it gave off the false sense of surviving.

Survivorman is the best of all.

I love Survivorman. I think his show is far more realistic when it comes to survival situations. And I have a lot more respect for Les, because he's out there alone for seven days, showing you how to survive and filming the show entirely by himself. That guy has guts.

Bear's show feels like it's "How To Survive If You Were Trapped In An Action Movie". The situation's always feel so overblown, and the fact that he has a camera crew with him, just ruin's the show for me.

Les is the winner for me, hands down.

The title refers to the host of the show, Canadian filmmaker and survival expert Les Stroud, who used survival skills and knowledge to survive for up to seven days alone videotaping his adventures in remote locales where he brought with him little or no food, water, or equipment. According to the show's website, each location was scouted and pre-planned extensively by Stroud and his team who consulted with survival specialists and natives of each area. The fact that Stroud spent his time alone without a production crew is a major focus of the show.
Survivorman does sound better^its Wiki info. Survivorman seems to be locally in Canada only though.

At the rate things are going in this thread, I might be beating a dead horse.    My vote goes to Les Stroud.  Unlike Bear Grills who has a camera crew with him, Les really does more work than a one-man band --if you can make such a comparison.  Regardless, I do harbor a deep respect for both of them.

If you've seen both Survivorman and Man vs Wild, then it's obvious that Survivorman wins hands down. Les does an amazing job of showing how to survive in the wild, all while filming it on his own at the same time. He seems to additionally be skilled in directing, as he always knows where to put the cameras to get an interesting shot. He still has a backup crew handy, in case he gets into any real danger, but it's not like they're right at the set giving him advice or tools to use.

Man vs Wild has complaints from me ranging from set-up to ridiculous. The camera crew in place means that Bear doesn't have to worry about shots, but it also means he doesn't have to come up with any advice himself. One of the best examples I can give of the flaws of Man vs Wild is in the episode where he is trapped in the desert. Two things happen there that no sane person would do. First of all, he kills a snake just so he can use its skin to hold urine in to drink later. What part of that sentence IS safe? Secondly, he later tries to raid a killer bees' nest so he can grab a bit of the honey comb for a "snack." That is not the first thing that you would be thinking of if you were trapped in the desert. Man vs Wild I feel is suited more for the audience that likes drama and action, not realism.

I have a lot of respect for both of these guys.  I like when Man Vs. Wild has a guest appearance like Will Ferrell or Jake Gylenhaal, and Bear is more animated and therefore more entertaining to watch.

Have a great day!

I generally enjoy survivor man rather than man vs wild. Les Stroud just seems more down to earth than Bear Grylls. Bear just seems like another one of those weird survival or animal gurus like Steve Irwin or the grizzly man got killed in the end for being too extreme. Plus Les Stroud is by himself, which is probably why he doesn't do as crazy things as Bear does, those are just my thoughts.

I like Bear Grylls more just because of the way that he acts. I think that they are both cool shows to watch as it is nice to see the tatics that they would use. I think that it is some quality entertainment for both.
