Freedom of speech should be clarified to freedom of political, religious, etc speech. There are certain forums where you should be allowed to hold any opinion and express it.

However, there is no such thing as true freedom of speech. There are certain things that you should not be allowed to say in certain places/situations.

That's my simple answer

I think that restrictions against slander and libel are very good examples of acceptable limits of free speech. If what you are saying is true, then yes, I think you have the right to say it... hence why there is protection for people pointing out what officials are doing wrong, but it has to be true.

I think that verbal abuse is a grey area, and I don't know how to handle it. Arguments happen, and people say things that they do not mean... so I don't think that they should be punished for that. But then you have people that are just purposefully mean... abusive parents, bullies, general a**h***s, people that make death threats or incite violence... that is stuff I think we need to work on.

Freedom of speech is only viable outside the law of the jungle meaning you have none in most places and environments. If your willing to risk your choice of words in such environments then you can be punished with them. Knowing how to use the words at the right place at the right time is the key.

I think John Stuart Mill made the most compelling argument for freedom of speech. No opinion should be outlawed because 1)it's always possible that we with the received wisdom are not correct, 2)even in a false opinion there may be a portion of the truth, 3)to outlaw false opinions hobbles us in our justification of the opinions we hold by preventing challenges to them, and 4) unchallenged opinions tend to turn into dead beliefs; without being renewed in their vigor by contest, they wither and become believed as more of a formality than anything else. Essentially, the virtue of human reason is that errors are corrigible: new cultural understandings are a social process that for the best result must not be rigid and inflexible. In two cases we have censorship of opinions: we're afraid we might be wrong or we're certain that we know everything there is to know about the issue already. In both cases censorship is unjust and ridiculous.

I believe freedom of speech is self explanatory.

As long as what your saying is true and has a justifiable reason to be said/expressed, then i say it shouldnt be resricted. I go to a psychologist every few weeks, and i find it funny how she tells me i about the patient-doctor privacy act at the begining of every session, and how it says she has to alert the government if i say i want to kill the president. I could understand a threat, but an opinion being illegal? thats going way to far.

I think that anyone should be allowed to say or publish or post whatever they want, as long as it doesn't cause harm to others and can't be solved by shunning the person. If some idiot decides to cuss and swear like s/he's being filet'd, that's not so much speech as verbal garbage and should just be ignored and shunned. But if you get some wackos like those guys who were going to burn the koran before chickening out, that's not okay, since there's over a billion muslims in the world who got pissed and decided to hate all of america and burn american flags because of that. If you're going to try and get media attention on something, it shouldn't be something that can easily be distorted to foster hate for all people who have a common thread with you. Freedom of speech should have a common sense clause, if they're being an idiot and potentially endangering lives, then maybe they should be censored.

It's my right to say whatever I want, write what I want, and worship whatever I want. It's my opinion whether I want to use it for good or bad.

The speech that needs to be protected is the speech you hate the most. If someone wants to parade around going on about the KKK, you have to protect their right to do it.

I say that your views on freedom of speech are how much you are willing to let people disagree with you. Sure, you'll let people talk as much as they want if they agree with you, but your REAL views on this right depend on how much you will let people argue with you.
