One of my neighbors (he's in his 50's) got lung cancer and then later died.

Smoking is not fun. However, I'm not against the industries for making cigarettes and other tobacco products. People have a choice of doing them or not; it's just as much their fault for doing the tobacco as the companies themselves.

My grandfather had many health complications from heavy smoking, coupled with his terrible diet it eventually caused his premature death. My Auntie was also a smoker and lost her battle to cancer a few years ago.

My Uncle is a heavy smoker and although he has tried to quit a few times, he still smokes... I often worry about him whenever I think about it.

My maternal grandfather died from smoking-related throat cancer. My paternal grandmother has severe emphysema and needs to use some strange machine every day just so she can be able to breath. It is painful to listen to her struggle to breath, and she looks so sad. My maternal aunt has to use oxygen because she used to smoke, though she has escaped cancer so far. My parents have been non-smokers long enough that the risk of them getting cancer has dropped significantly, but they both still worry about it.

As for myself, the near-constant exposure to second hand smoke when I was little has given me breathing problems... not severe enough to be called asthma, but noticeable. And it gets worse if I am near smoke, my throat closes up and I cannot breath or I go into coughing fits. As a result, I also am constantly on the watch for warning signs.

That is the really frustrating part, many smokers are completely aware of the dangers of smoking but it is so powerfully addicting they feel like they can't quit. Basically they just give up..

Omniterran : I know talking to him might seem awkward, but if you do it in a non-confronting way then I don't see how he could have a real problem with it- If my family expressed concerns for my wellbeing (even if they were misguided) I would feel cared for.

No reason to hate someone for smoking. Not a bad thing to dislike the habit in general though. I used to smoke a lot and I now hate it as well. Large inhalations of salvia will make you think twice about any kind of smoke.
