thing1 : Yeah. Oh yeah, making these big can be a good idea to make a movie out of, and maybe in the end of movie, either these bugs have taken over earth and are populating in moon and going to mars, or these were tamed and were used to er, explore places like deep ocean, outer space etc.

faisal.97 : Naw. I am not into scary movies, so that is not really my thing. If anything, that would make me not want to watch scary movies more.

And I found this out: 2.28 solar flares occur per year. I really thought it was more than that.

Applying Newton's Third Law, humans can actually move the Earth by jumping. If every person on Earth gathered in one place and jumped about 30 centimeters in the air, it would push the Earth away about 100th the width of a single Hydrogen atom. But as we fall back to where we started, the Earth will go back to where it started too. So it would in no way alter the orbit for more than the time in which the jump occurred.

If a single person weighing about 150 pounds jumps, same principal. Earth will pull that person down with a force of 150 pounds, and the person pulls the Earth up with a force of 150 pounds. But the effects are more visible on the person because the force is exerted on a person of a mass of 68kg, and the SAME amount of force is applied to an object with a mass of 5.6x10^24 kg.
Since Acceleration = Force / Mass, the equations for both would look like this

150lb person: Acceleration = 667N / 68kg
Earth: Acceleration = 667N / 5,600,000,000,000,000,000,000,000kg

So the acceleration of the Earth would be INCREDIBLY smaller for the Earth than the person. The Earth would be pushed away about one billionth the diameter of a single proton. That can't be directly measured. Only calculated. But it is cool to know that if you jump, you are actually (technically) moving the entire Earth. Even if it is amount only calculable, not measurable.

In science class, when atoms within molecules are bonded with single bonds, we generally think of them as stationary.

In reality, both sides of the molecule are constantly turning around the single bond and they're doing that far more than a billion times per second.

I think it's 10^14 or 10^15 turns per second, if I remember correctly.

Just a couple interesting facts here that I looked up...

- If you traveled at the speed of light, it would take you 13 seconds to travel around the Earth.

- If you drilled a hole straight down into the Earth and jumped in it, it would take you 42 minutes and 12 seconds to get to the other side.

- And somewhat of a gross one here...the average person accidentally eats 430 bugs each year.

Scientists can use the rate of mutation within particular parts of DNA to map out the timeline of evolution.

While the 249 million base pairs of chromosome 1 would be almost 9 centimeters, it's folded up so tightly that it can fit within a 20 micrometer cell, and within that an even smaller nucleus. And it's only 1 out of 23 chromosomes we have in there. I find that incredible.

There's also the fact that to replicate proteins, these chromosomes have to actually be unraveled (in small sections).

In small pockets around the Hudson Bay in Canada, the gravitational pull is less than anywhere else on the Planet, albeit a small 0.005% smaller, it is significant in the grand scale of things.

The Earth is not round (ITS FLAT!), there is a 20 mile long protruding ring  in the equator that makes the world more oval than circular, if you view it from the right angle outside of Earth.

The reason that all things fall at the same speed in the same gravitational pull is because all matter with mass displays properties of inertia (resistance to the effects of gravity) equal to that of its mass.

Proteins generally fold according to what has the lowest free energy of a given system.
In other words, what's most stable.

In practical application, that means that some human protein structures can be formed simply through letting components interact with themselves. Anfinsen (a scientist) ran a similar experiment with DNA.

I find this really neat.

Pregnancy tests and drug tests (urinalysis) work the same way.  Both use a process called "paper chromatography."  The principal is relatively simple.  The tests screen for metabolites of controlled/illicit substances or hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin) which is the hormone produced about three weeks after conception.

Essentially, like all materials, these are made up of atoms, which can bond with others, and are then dissolved in water and expelled through urine.  When these materials are being tested for, there will be trace amounts of ions that give off a color when concentrated spread evenly along the surface of the test strip.  The test strip will then be submerged up to a specific level in the urine-causing the indicator ions to move along the paper as it soaks up the urine.  This all has to do with electron affinity.  Like charges repel and opposites attract.  So...if a material you're testing for has high electronegativity, put a colored trace ion with a high electronegativity on the paper, and any present ions being tested for will repel the indicator away from the sample and cause the indicator to gather above the soak line-leaving a colored band.

It is then possible to judge from the distance, color and potency of indicator what types of ions are present-giving you positives for different types of metabolites or hormones.  This could also be used to test for certain contaminants in things like drinking water.
