Well, since this is the "Green Forum" I might as well make a thread about this if you hadn't known already.

This is an incandescent light bulb - the ones that you shouldn't use

This is the fluorescent light bulbs - the ones that you should use

Why?

"According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, if every U.S. household replaced just one regular incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb, it would prevent 90 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, the equivalent of taking 7.5 million cars off the road. And the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that by replacing regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs at the same minimal rate, Americans would save enough energy to light more than 2.5 million homes for a year."
"On top of that, replacing one regular light bulb with an approved compact fluorescent light bulb would save consumers $30 in energy costs over the life of the bulb."

I already use mostly fluorescent light bulbs in my house.
Do you?

Actually something that most Americans aren't told is that over exposure to Fluorescent can be bad for your eye site. We'll know many years from now just how bad they are for you if and when people start having really bad eye site from using them.

So when I get a house, I'll only use Fluorescent lights in places of my house that I don't use very often. I wouldn't use them in my kitchen or living room since I'd be in those places often. If I used them all the time every where, I'd save money now but in the long run the damage done to my eyes just doesn't seem worth it.

I like fluorescent lightbulbs, but don't they have mercury in them? If so I don't want to use them. If they break then you're kind of screwed.

We mostly use fluorescent light bulbs in our house, but we use incandescent for our living room, same as David for the same reason. Although we try to save alot of energy so we rarely turn all that many lights on at all.

I think we used to have a few; at least one. I think they were either broken or stolen before we could really use them. Dang kids.

I use a few in a few places. I don't really like them; they aren't very bright and don't light up as well. But I do use a few... so at least I'm slightly helping the environment that way.

They need to start making some form of LEDs that can be used in a house, considering they use only .05 volts of electricity to light up, and are alot smaller than the standard light bulb. I mean if they can use them in cars, i'm sure they can find a way to convert them into commercial and home usage. idk, just a thought.

I wasn't aware...i figured LED brightness can't be too good for your eyes, but i didn't know it was worse. What other alternatives are there? Unless they find something new, it looks like we're going to be stuck in this situation for awhile.

Davideo7 says "Actually something that most Americans aren't told is that over exposure to Fluorescent can be bad for your eye site"
This is true, and I have also found that fluorescents actually give me headaches and make me feel nauseous just from being in the same room as them, even if I'm not looking at the light.
It's something to do with the frequency at which the element vibrates.

So no, I refuse to use fluorescent globes.
Which is problematic for me seeing as shops are more and more getting rid of the incandescent ones...
But I suppose no one cares about peoples health these days

We use some fluorescent bulbs at my house, mixed with the other regular ones.

I learned something about them. Regular bulbs emit heat. Don't get a fluorescent bulb for a gecko that requires heat. They like heat.

I don't want compact florescent light bulbs because they have mercury in them so I use LED light bulbs they last longer and have no mercury in them so it can't kill me.I'll take a little eye damage for a mercury free light bulb.Besides I usually stare st the TV anyway .
