Well, it depends what your goal/lifestyle is. Of course you want food rich in Vitamins and Minerals, but the "best food" can vary depending on how you're living.

For example, if you're looking to build muscle, you actually want a diet rich in calories and fats. To that effect, something in the meat/dairy catagories would be best.

All in all, it has been stated by many dietricians that Spinach is all around "super-food". It's nearly perfect. So I'd have to go with that as my answer.

the "best food" can vary depending on how you're living

That statement is pretty much the epitome of answers for this question. Where you live, and how you live dominate what food you eat. Different cultures in all sorts of countries grow different foods, some of which are the only things that can successfully be grown there in certain places. In addition to spinach, I would have to say a couple servings of a combination of fruits and vegetables are an excellent snack to indulge to give you energy and health throughout the you day. Each day. But, keep in mind that it's not good to eat only one thing. The body needs other minerals and vitamins that can't be found in fruits and veges.

And really, I think it's safe to also ask, "what are the healthier foods from each group?" for this thread.

The answer would vary greatly because there are so many healthy things that are only accessable in certain places. I would suggest instead of looking into "the healthiest foods" try and think up different diet or meal plans as a variety of healthy foods will be much better for your body. You could also look up some health websites and try things to find what works for you.

One shouldn't worry about proteins when it comes to running. Your basic diet, if you follow the food-group pyramid should consist of plenty of proteins already.

I would suggest complex carbohydrates, such as grains and pastas. (Don't load up too much or it'll cause cramping)
An actual good way to prevent cramping before a run is to eat a banana. The banana, being rich in potassium is very useful for preventing cramps during your running events.

mostly fruits, veggies, carbs, and anything that isnt sugary and fattening. Some protein is good.

I don't follow it, but then again, I am a FREAK of NATURE. So its unlikely you could copy me. But you should just eat as a normal person should, except cut out more meats for more natural sugars like apples.

I would say that the most important food would be lean protein. As well as a reasonable amount of carbs before you are going on a big run to stock up energy.

I would recommend something high in protein and vitamins and calcium and carbohydrates. Preferably, vegetables and fruits, I guess.

Broccoli and blueberries are always good. It's good to be hydrated/not thirsty. Try making homemade granola bars because a lot of the ones that are sold in stores are crap. The big name brands tend to use to cheap protein, too much sugar, small amounts (if any) of fruit/nuts, etc. I'd go on foodnetwork.com if I were you and look up one of Alton Brown's recipes 8).

You want a lot of proteins and *health* energy. Chicken is the perfect food for this, as well as banana's. Basically meats and fruit is what I eat when I plan to run or bike 2-8 hours straight. Veggies are good to but some have bad side effects that can actually decrease your performance (I avoid veggies when running, biking or working out).
