Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward. Whoever cannot take care of himself without police protection is both. It is as cowardly to betray an offender to justice, even though his offences be against yourself, as it is not to avenge an injury by violence. It is dastardly and contemptible in a wounded man to betray the name of his assailant, because if he recovers, he must naturally expect to take vengeance himself

so goes the legend by a wounded man to his assailant: If I live, I’ll kill you. If I die, I forgive you.

So what you are suggesting is that our entire society should be vigilantes? Have you followed this idea through to it's results? It would be anarchy. It won't work. It has nothing to do with being a coward.

So, you're saying that if someone attacks a person who is weaker - who can't physically protect themselves - then the weaker person is a coward who deserves to suffer in silence (assuming they survive the attack), for the sole reason that they can not personally take that act of vengeance? Would you feel the same if the weaker person was a family member of yours? An elderly man who couldn't shoot straight even if he had a gun? A child who had a rag of chloroform clapped over their face? Would you be able to forgive the person that killed them? Would you call them 'dastardly and contemptible' if they survived and told a cop that they'd been assaulted, and by whom?

I watch actual court footage on a daily basis, and I have heard stories of assault that would make you puke. Assault on people that never had a chance to defend themselves or 'take vengeance'. Look up CT v Hayes, if you have a strong stomach, and read what happened to that family. Without the police and the courts, your 'code' would mean offenders like that would be walking the streets and ready to do the same thing to some other person. Maybe eventually they'd run into someone who could 'take vengeance', but it's unlikely. Scum like that seeks out the easy targets, and by that 'code', the easy target is someone that can't fight back.

"Giant Pissing Match"? People simply gave their opinion on the Mafia code. Isn't that what you wanted?

There's a reason that the Mafia is pretty unstable (i.e everybody kills each other), and that's why.

The manner in which it was presented did not make it clear that this wasn't your personal code. The topic name of 'Who follows this code?' is just as easily read as a call-out (reference 'Who is a Lakers fan?', 'Who watches True Blood', and 'Who likes chocolate?') instead of a trivia question. As such, it's not surprising that people were appalled.
