(Yes that is me to the left) Meet Scott Pilgrim, age 23. He’s the bassist in the garage band Sex Bob-Omb. He’s dating a cute high schooler. His life is totally awesome. When he meets Ramona Flowers, everything changes. He is in love all over again. The brown stuff has hit the fan. Ramona has seven evil exes that he must defeat in order for Scott and Ramona to keep dating. Pretty messy storyline, I know, but Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel manages to engross and amaze. Does the tale still live up to “engross and amaze†as a movie and even a game? SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE MOVIE It was 6:00 PM at a crowded cinema in my local area. I am one of the few lucky shmucks that saw the Scott Pilgrim movie early, and I even got to listen to the director have a speech and also meet the actor who plays Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) after the movie. It was an exciting night. I already read the Scott Pilgrim books 1-5 and started the final volume in preparation for the event. From the point the movie started , I noticed a boo-boo that they should’ve caught: Scott Pilgrim is twenty-three years old in the novel and in the movie he’s twenty-two. I ignored that and saw that the very rest of the movie was surprisingly true to the books. They threw In most of the exact dialog from the books into the movie, and as an added bonus, they have one amazing Pac-Man-related joke that plays a big part in the beginning of the movie. I’m not going to spoil the joke so you’ll have to see it to believe it. The epic evil-ex batles, reminiscent of arcade game boss battles, are humor -filled battles to the death. In both the book and the film, Scott Pilgrim is the most awkward lover you’ll likely ever hear of in pop culture and the funny thing is that Michael Cera as an actor generally plays such a role as he did in Scott Pilgrim. It’s so much fun to watch Scott be such a badass and an awkward lover at the same time. The movie has the best “awkward-boy-falling-in-love†storyline I’ve ever seen. Such a storyline is a cliché that has been used as long as I can remember, but this had the whole audience guffawing. Scott will try to win Ramona with the Pac-Man joke, get his L-words mixed up, and really take a beating from the evil exes. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is the best graphic novel I’ve everread and it was a dream come true to see the movie live up to the hype. I am going to see the movie again with my family and they’ll surely be mortified that they were not informed of the phenomenon that is Scott Pilgrim. 4.7/5 SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE PSN Speaking of arcade game boss battles, a Scott Pilgrim game came out early this week, complete with, well, all the scenery and the beat-em-up fun from the movie. It can’t be any better now that it’s also a game…or can it? The presence of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World “The Game†should come as no surprise with all the reminiscence of video games throughout the book and he movie. There’s a twist, however. Instead of having realistic graphics or maybe guest voice acting, you get Clinton-age-esque (16-bit) side-scrolling beat-em-up game, straying far from how movie games are usually developed. Anyone can enjoy the game adaptation, as much as anyone can enjoy the previous transition from book to film, so this is basically Scott Pilgrim in disguise as old-school Nintendo’s River City Ransom. The game does a poor job at looking like Ransom with all the colors the PS3 can handle and how they’re used well. The game does have the River City Ransom gameplay and for those who ever played RCR, trust me, it’s good gameplay. You can pick up objects like trash cans, snowballs, baseball bats and even the baddies you knocked over!! Each level ends in Scott Pilgrim fashion with an evil ex boss battle, of course, too. This would-be “best game ever†is not without its flaws. For one, the game may have a frequent autosave feature, but the game freezes often and there’s sound glitches galore (on my PS3).On top of that, the game itself has one hell of a frustrating difficulty, as the enemies are strong and smart, even on the lowest “Average Joe†difficulty.Did I mention that the co-op is split-screen only? Before you lose all hope on Pilgrim’s video game outiing, try it out via a demo. I got the full version on day one and I’m ignoring the flaws for an authentic interactive Scott Pilgrim experience. 3.9/5 THE VERDICT Scott Pilgrim is my hero, no matter what format he's in. Many people were skeptical and thought the whole "awkward-boy-falling-in-love" theme is stale. It is far from stale. Neither the book, film, or game should be missed. It is a memorable adaption that combines the three things the world couldn't be without: video games, relationships and music. Scott Pilgrim took on the world and the world is astonished. OVERALL: 4.8/5 (Yes that is me to the left) Meet Scott Pilgrim, age 23. He’s the bassist in the garage band Sex Bob-Omb. He’s dating a cute high schooler. His life is totally awesome. I'm a complete Scott Pilgrim junkie too! I loved the movie too, but I do have a lot of criticisms of the movie, mostly involving the plot and what should have been included over other things. Overall I was just in love with everything Edgar Wright did to make the movie get that video game feel that the graphic novel has. I think the growth of Scott Pilgrim made him a lot easier to relate to in the graphic novels than in the movie, but with the limited time he had in the movie I guess it was a pretty good progression. I did like that the movie didn't try to be tooo true to the books, otherwise it would have made for a very muddled movie, that was trying to do too much. I'm totally in |

I'm in lesbians with this thing man. The movie was great for what it was able to fit into about a two hour movie. A little mad that they took out one of my favorite lines in the entire series, but it was great for only working with five of six novels and notes from the sixth one. I love the ending for both the novels and the movie. |

I am a big Scott Pilgrim fans, read the comics twice, saw the movie twice, etc. I loved the movie, but some parts were just unnecessary.

The movie looks like it's a pretty good watch and is a great relief from all the crap that hollywood dishes out lately. Never heard of this series till the movie came out but hey its just another hidden gem I guess. |
