I've been working on a Rhythm/Beat game for Vizzed. One thing that this site has a lot of is video game music. There's well over 100,000 video game songs in the Video Game Music Room and I want to find ways to utilize them, so I started working on a Rhythm/Beat game.

Here's how it'd work. Every single song would have the game on its page and you'd be able to play that song in the game. Every single song would have a leaderboard.

You can test out what I have so far here:
Vizzed Rhythm Reactor
(final name pending)

There's 8 songs that you can test out in this demo.
1760495083.png

It plays similar to many games of the same genre. It supports a controller, a keyboard, and a touchscreen.
1760495134.png

It also currently supports 2 players (locally with controllers only) but I'm not sure if that'll be part of the final version, or if it is, it wouldn't be part of the leaderboard.

Notes:
  • You get points depending on how close you get
  • There's a multiplier that increases as your streak increases but it resets if there's a miss
  • Explosion size is dependent on how good you did with each note
  • Endurance mode goes on forever and just makes the song loop and get faster (I plan to make adjustments). It's the only mode that has a game over, the other modes end when the song ends.

Known issues:
  • Hold notes sometimes are overlapped by other notes, making them hard to use
  • If you finish a song, you'll probably have to refresh the page since ending a song and going to a new song sometimes glitches the next song.
  • Notes have already gone into position before the notes appear, making it impossible for some songs to hit the first few notes
  • Hold notes count as a miss if released too early. In Guitar Hero, the longer you hold a note, the more points you get (tgags123).

Possible future features:
  • Themed levels based on the game of the song
  • RPG elements and a level up system
  • Randomly featured song of the day or week that would appear on the index page (Furret's suggestion)
  • Most competitive song and latest song competed in which would appear on the index page
  • Game's music page shows who has the overall most experience earned for that game
  • System's music page shows who has the overall most experience earned for songs of that system
  • Online competitive mode where you can compete with others (probably the very last feature to be added if I do add it)

Be sure to test out the game and let me know what you think of the idea. If anyone notices any issues I didn't mention, please let me know.

AND if anyone has any ideas for the game, like ways I could make it more unique or fun, let me know! I want to find ways to make this more exciting.

This was unexpected, but I like these sorts of things, especially with video game OST.

I was able to upload a song to it as well but I'm unsure if it already auto generated notes for it or if it took the notes of one of the demo songs when I played it.

A suggestion: Have a few songs be randomly chosen to be 'Featured' on the main menu page of the game every day/week, so it might promote a more active leaderboard for those songs.

So me and Furret have been already playing a rhythm mini game in another game as of late so this is perfectly timed!

I tried Green Hill and a bit of One Winged Angel seemed pretty good so far definitely looking forward to when it's finished.

Also maybe since you wanna implement leaderboards maybe you should have one of your awards in the awards thread there should be an award for whoever has the most 1st places on leaderboards or something like that.

I'm not real sure about the name so far though

I just wanted to point out that I have another game for the site in the works, which sorta utilizes a different section of the site. That one isn't as far along though and I'll announce the development of that one later. I'm announcing this one now because I view it as over 50% complete.

I want this game to have mechanics similar to Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. The experience system would be based on the number of people who have competed in a song. The more people, the more experience you'd get for your scores. If you were the first to put up a score and later on, others put up scores, you'd get experience from them playing it. The thought process behind that is I want to encourage people to compete with each other. Of course you'd still get experience from throwing up big scores in songs no one else has played. The experience would go toward a level system exclusive to the Video Game Music Room.

I envision on each song page there being a leaderboard and the person who has the top scores for each mode being highlighted. There's currently 3 modes, but I'm still debating on if I only want 1 mode to have a leaderboard (otherwise it might be too many leaderboards). I then envision the game's song page showing the overall leader of that game (combining everyone's high scores for that game). And then likewise, for a game system.

I might one day make a competitive mode where you could play online against someone else, but that would be the last feature to be added since it'd be the most difficult.

Furret : There's a good chance that it might not be generating the notes of an uploaded song, so I'll add that to the list of things to fix.

Featured song is a good idea. I'd also feature songs that have the most competition or have the latest scores.

SonicOlmstead : Do you mean in my yearly Vizzed Board anniversary thread? I would definitely do that

As someone that has spent a lot of time playing Guitar Hero in the past, I love this idea!

I did notice an issue when I was playing. Releasing a held note "early" counts as a miss, even if you hit the note initially. This makes it hard to hit the next note after. The way that held notes work in Guitar Hero is that you get points the longer that you hold the note, but it doesn't count as a miss unless you miss it initially. I think it would be an improvement for this game to function the same way, that way players are able to hit the next note after a held note.

I tried it out with by uploading the theme for Soul Edge. So far it's already pretty good. Aside from what other people have said, I think adding custom keybinding options would also be a massive improvement. I play a lot of rhythm games myself and I have a unified binding I typically like to use across all of them.

Okay, this definitely was NOT on my Vizzed bingo and it has illuminated a day which hasn't been nice so it's a win-win for me.

I'll probably try it during the weekend as I'll have some free time. I've been also tempted to listen again to my favorite OSTs, even though I don't have that many, so double reason for me. I'll check the thread more thoroughly by then and be aware of its bugs/limitations and provide any further feedback I can.

Upcoming Christmas present with that another game? Please make it happen

So as I've been playing it some more I think something that would really help is if we could get a little countdown before the song starts playing after you hit play song so that people can be ready when the notes start coming.

I just wanted to point out that Hard difficulty, since it adds more notes, it helps match the song. Also, when this game is finished, the notes and their positions will be stored in the database rather than being generated as the game starts to preserve consistency. I haven't tested whether the generated notes change if you were to play the game song and difficulty twice, but I imagine it might not be exactly the same which wouldn't be fair when there's a leaderboard.

I have a question for everyone. Should there be sound effects played when you get a Perfect or a Great?

tgags123 : Noted. Thanks for the feedback. I'll get that fixed.

nakina : What do you mean custom keybindings? When I uploaded my own song, it created notes that matched the song. Was that not the case for you?

EX Palen : Maybe a Christmas present, yeah. This will probably be live in a beta version within a couple weeks. It for sure will be "finished" by December. The other feature might be live during December but for sure would have a beta ready sometime next month. That other feature might not appeal to as many people but it honestly appeals to me more. I don't want to spoil the other feature but, while it's something that's been done before, I think the way I'm doing it has never been done before.

SonicOlmstead : Yeap I added that to my initial post of bugs, I just worded it weird, lol "Notes have already gone into position before the notes appear, making it impossible for some songs to hit the first few notes"

By custom keybindings, I mean being able to pick other keys to control the game. Switching out the D, F, G configuration for whatever key combination a player wants to use.
