And so we have come to the final Oregon Trail game that was made by The Learning Company does it go out with a bang of a rifle? Or the whimper of a Dysentery related death, let’s find out
Gameplay and Story So we open, with a Cut Scene, yes they added cut scenes to this game as well as characters we have to take along for the ride, the Montgomery siblings, Parker, Cassie, and Jimmy, but don’t worry they don’t get to suffer from Dysentery (though Jimmy does get bitten by a snake), they meet up with this trail guide that is a friend of their father’s (their mother dies before the events of this game), actually you could easily skip through their cut screens because they add NOTHING to the game, I get that the Cluefinders and Reader Rabbit games were very successful titles but I don’t think the cut scenes were necessary.
Graphics: well here’s where the game will lose some points, this is essentially a remake of Oregon Trail II, why? Did they lose their budget? Did Mattel’s purchase attempt leave a bad taste in people’s mouths? But they added new river crossing scenes, and something new we get pop ups from Jedediah and he lets us know how much stuff we hunted and gathered (don’t bother fishing it’s not possible performance wise at least on my boxes) The cut scenes are well animated though
Soundtrack: They recycled some of the soundtrack from OT2 but only for the locations, as well as the events
Addictive: Well once I started playing it I didn’t want to stop however even though I said I would play it for gaming season I just haven’t figured out when (maybe when I finish with Outnumbered because that’s likely going to be finished first)
Depth: well upside to this game is that no more multiple discs to use just one, and they added fishing and gathering to the statuses but Fishing by hand is kind of useless in this game (at least on my copy) but the good news is they did not take out the fishing event from the original Mecc version of Oregon Trail 2, this game does offer the same trails that were offered in game 2. As well as the same years so it’s going to be weird that one or two Montgomery siblings may not be born the year of the trail you travel. In fact I don’t think they expect us to play multiple times as I don’t think we would have been able to catch ALL of the cut scenes. Besides a good chunk of the cut scenes are of stories of the trail told by Jed (hey it’s the Oregon Trail, the internet wasn’t a thing yet) They won’t even mention what the Donner Party did (come on even the third game didn’t mince words, all the games brought up the Whitmans, and yet they show little Jimmy do something dumb that could have killed him.
Difficulty: I don’t think this was hard but, for some reason I feel that they made it harder, like food kept running out more easily and morale slipped too easily, it had been about a year since I wrapped up Oregon Trail 3 so it made me forget to do a few things like, buy some salt for meat preservation, but it’s also kind of difficult to shop it won’t let you buy anything between 5 and 10 of some things for example and when I gather plants even though it says “Keep it” Jed would say that we didn’t gather any
Post review follow up: It’s Oregon Trail 2 with cut scenes, also this was one of the last games that was released by the Learning company before they stuck to releasing licensed educational titles, and then all of a sudden they were making games for Arthur, Zoboomafoo, and Caillou. I could easily make a smart alecky remark about how Amazon Trail 2 is better than this, but that game was broken. I don’t understand why they thought the only other thing they could do is cut scenes to the game, I guess the actors that were in the previous games didn’t want to do this anymore, or maybe people pointed out too many problems with the fourth edition game and felt that they shouldn’t go extra or something. Maybe someone was disappointed that Game 2 didn’t work right on Windows XP
