I always found it pretty fascinating just what types of Myths, Hoaxes, or Legends people tend to have about certain video games and either it be Obscure or Extremely Popular I am curious to hear about some of the ones that you fondly remember or absolutely hated. Feel free to talk about ones that are either Real or Fake!

I'll go ahead and start with one myself that I remember as a Kid since it still particularly fascinated me.

Back in 2009 there was this video floating around on the internet of a "Super Secret Top Level" in Super Mario World that upon entering, you'd receive a laser suit that'd be able to shoot beams across the entire screen. It was just a ROM Hack but it got me extremely into ROM Hacking Mario World for a good while when I was younger.

There is a lot of myths about video games. Some where real and some where fake.

Back in 1993 Kirby's Adventure came out. People were claiming there was a secret level in Ice Cream Island the second level/world. They even showed a picture of this secret level and what it was supposed to look like. However, the level was not real it did not exist in Ice Cream Island. I looked all over for this level. Eventually, game magazines and internet posts admitted the level did not exist. So where did this myth come from? Well years later Nintendo admitted that Ice Cream Island was supposed to have an extra stage. But due to the space limitations they left it out. This is probably were the myth originated from.


Protoman is Mega Man's brother. He often helps his brother Mega Man fight the forces of Dr. Wily. Proto Man like his brother has a strong sense of justice. Unlike Mega Man Proto Man is just not that social but a good guy. After Mega Man 5 was released people started thinking Protoman was evil. Ruby Spear's Mega Man Cartoon even had Proto Man working for Dr. Wily. In Mega Man 5 it was revealed that it was not Proto Man Wily had created a fake Proto Man to frame the real one. I really hated this myth that Proto Man is a bad guy because it did not make sense. If Proto Man was a bad guy why would he fight with Mega Man to stop Wily. Second, why would he pull his brother out of a jam. In what is considered Cannon Dr. Wily fixed Proto Man's Nuclear Reactor that was causing him pain. However, Proto Man having a strong sense of justice saw how evil Wily was. He left Wily and teamed with his brother to stop him. So yeah, I hated this myth because Proto Man is not a bad guy he is a good guy.

Mid 1990's ugh this is one myth I really hated. Mega Man X was really Mega Man 10 and Capcom skipped 8 and 9 after Mega Man 7. Okay, this myth made no sense and I do not know how this one got started. By the time this myth originated Mega Man X2 had already come out the year before. Mega Man X3 was in the works and was about to come out. I hated this myth for several reasons. It did not make sense. It was clear in Mega Man X that X was a different character than the original Mega Man. Capcom even tells you that in the game booklet and even the game itself. If X was really Mega Man it would really not explain how Zero fits into the X series that well. In addition, if Mega Man X was really Mega Man 10 why would Capcom go with X2 and be in the works for X3 when this myth originated. As one could imagine this myth was quickly debunked. While X is a spin off of the original Mega Man it is a new series with its own story line.

Also in the mid 1990's again I'm staying with the Mega Man X series. After Sigma is defeated in Mega Man X2. He claims Why was Zero he is the last of the great doctor's creations urrrrgghhhh!. This lead to people on the internet saying that Zero was created by DR. Wily and that is what Sigma was referencing. This myth turned out to be true. In Mega Man X4 it is confirmed that Zero was created by Wily. In a flashback Sigma was a Maverick Hunter at that time while Zero was a maverick. Zero and Sigma fought each other to a draw. Sigma smashed Zero's crystal knocking him out. It was revealed that Zero had a virus that made him violent. But the virus left Zero and merged with Sigma forming the Sigma Virus. Sigma went maverick. Zero became a good guy and co-leader of the Maverick Hunters with X. In X5 Wily even tells Sigma that Zero is his masterpiece.

Finally, In MLB 2002 and 2003 there was a myth that you could enter a hall of fame members name in create a player. If the hall of fame member was a position player he would hit a home run every other at bat. If he was a pitcher he would get more than 10 strike outs per game. I like MLB 2002 and MLB 2003 for play station. When I heard this rumor I put it to the test. I entered several hall of fame member's names. It turned out while the batters with the hall of fame members name seemed to perform better. They did not hit a home run at every other at bat. Also when creating a hall of fame pitcher. The strikeouts did not really change. The only thing that changed was the velocity. Anyway, this was a myth that turned out to be fake. This myth originated on game guide sites. My opinion is somebody created hall of fame member players and had really good games with them. Then they posted that is what happens when you enter them. I could not replicate what the guides were saying.
