In 1996 PBS Kids picked up a trio of new shows for their lineup to replace three shows that either ran it's course, was being rebranded, or ended for a stupid reason. They were replaced with two animated shows and a spinoff of the show that ended for a stupid reason that I don't really understand but I'll air my grievances about it when I get to it (likely next week). Thing is I never really saw Adventures from the Book of Virtues because it was never on at a convenient time but then again, in 96 I was watching YTV full time by then, but the other animated show on the other hand.....I was excited when I learned that Arthur was being made into an animated series, books I had read aloud were going to be made into an animated series, and I knew this was going to be a big deal at the time because PBS Kids didn't have alot of animated content at the time (now that's all they kind of have), Warning I may talk about the show more than the game here
Gameplay and Story: Well the only story is...the storybook in the game, it's one of those click around for surprises games so you don't really have to do anything but sit back and let the book do it's thing. Arthur and his friends have just finished their first day of school and they are complaining about how tough Mr.Ratburn is and how he gave them homework on the first day, and then Mr.Haney the Principal announced that the School Spellathon is coming up, and despite Arthur's own misgivings about it (sorry no segment where we see him spell aardvark), he ultimately passes a spelling test (along with The Brain) that put him in the Spellathon...and wins..and DW Taunting Arthur comes back to haunt her because Mr.Ratburn announces he will be teaching Kindergarten the next school year (too bad the tv writers never stuck with it instead they had him follow the kids to fourth grade). You know I'm actually glad that the tv series developed the characters better (especially Binky, he started off as basically the bully of the class but by the third season he was hanging out with our group of anthropomorphic animals yeah the show was on so long I actually forgot they were animals sometimes) and even moreso at least when they aired the episode (which was episode 2) the story was split into two episodes Arthur and the Real Mr.Ratburn (little did we know we wouldn't meet the real Mr.Ratburn until 2019 (I wish I found out at home instead of at work I gasped very loudly) and it broke the entire state of Alabama, and then I questioned if the state even aired Will and Grace or Glee) and Arthur's Spelling Trubble (yeah that's how the episode was titled) because the storyline about the kids anxiety about having Mr.Ratburn as a teacher was dropped pretty quickly in the book
Graphics: They really do look alot like the book it was based on, and oh something I neglected to mention, even in the games we keep an eye out for the names of Marc Brown's kids, something I always enjoyed doing when reading the books, like they make us take a closer look at the books
Soundtrack: There's no background music they use quite a few stock sounds in Broderbunds library though
Addictive: I do have memories of playing this game back in the 90s and yet somehow playing it for the first time after watching the tv series kind of made me cringe because the voices weren't right, I know they re
Depth: They read you the entirety of the story and that's just about it, this was one of the earliest titles so there's no mini games. I want to address something, one of the things I'm glad the tv series did was fix a major continuity issue...unless parts of Arthur and the True Francine take place before or inbetween Arthur's Teacher Trouble then how does this story start on the first day of school? in Arthur and the True Francine everyone finds out they are in Ratburn's class. But when they aired Arthur and the True Francince, they fixed it so that Muffy started when they were in Second Grade rather than third grade (I'm just sorry we only got to have two episodes with Mr.Marco but then again he only got to show up in two books....and he was Moose in the books, why did they change him?)
Difficulty: It's not difficult period.
Post review follow up: I stand by what I said when I said in a previous review the show should have ended with Arthur and Muffy turning nine and the party is at Muffy's house, and when they blow out the candles they flashforward to them as adults (we got to spend more time with the adult Pepper Ann characters than we did with the Grown up Arthur characters, and what bugs me even more is that we didn't get to find out what everyone ended up doing) I'm actually happy that the success of the show led to more books (including chapter books based on the episodes of the tv show), more living books games, other educational games, several one hour specials, merchandise (the final episode should have been an hour long) and a parade of guest stars, including a Mr.Rogers crossover that happened on both sides (but then again Mr.Rogers appeared on several shows including Carmen Sandiego....sort of, someone had to perform the Owl and the p****cat) look the only reason I talk about the show so much here is that there isn't much to talk about in the game unless I bring up how this paper airplane shows up on every page depending on where you click and it leads to the The End Screen
This concludes my review join me tomorrow when I review *checks notes* (man I really need to take some serious consideration into the Candyland games...and I just realized I need to do screen shots of the popcap games I still need a second random picker wheel to decide...I should not be doing this while doing my review) oh just my luck I'll whine about Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego tomorrow |
