I couldn't help this morning to look up the movies that have been cancelled or postponed due to Covid-19 and I couldn't believe how many have already been affected. It also sounds like the summer movie list is going to also get bumped. I wonder if the schedules will be bumped to the following year or if they will simply compress the schedules in order to get everything released more quickly maybe in the hopes of making up for having everything closed for months.

There are also some movies that have gone directly to on-demand because they had already released or weren't likely to make a ton of money in theaters anyway and are likely to at least recoup something by going to on-demand.

On top of this any movie currently being made is likely cancelled or postponed as well. Can't film things if everything is shut-down and people are staying home. That means movies and TV shows coming later this year and into next year are getting pushed back.

It's not just these movies, all the ones that are coming out after the virus will be affected too because they'll be coming out with the delayed movies.


When these movies finally are ready to come out, they will be coming out on days that probably already have a full slate of movies, and those might be pushed back to avoid competition.

For example, Fast and Furious 9 was moved to April 2 2021. That happens to be the day The Expendables 4 was supposed to come out, so that will most likely be delayed.

Same for Ghostbusters: Afterlife. It's now scheduled to come out 2 days before Doctor Strange.

zanderlex : I honestly expect the release dates will ALL get pushed. The current bunch of movies being made are on hold so they won't be ready when expected. This will leave a hole in the release schedule in 12-18 months. If all the current movies that have been postponed get released 6 months later (or whatever it ends up being) then I think it will fill the gap that otherwise would exist with the other movies being put on hold.

I am disappointed though. I was excited about a lot of movies this year. A lot more excited than I felt last year honestly. And now it seems like we're going to have to wait a while for any of them. It's too bad but I understand why.

geeogree : I was really excited for the new James Bond and Fast and Furious. I'm starting to wonder what went into making the decision on how long to delay the movies. Many were pushed back all the way to next year but some were just delayed by a couple months.

The only one that really hurts me is Fast and Furious 9. Other movies are whatever, I can wait them out, but I always want the next stupid action movie, and to have to wait for it is just maddening.

Thankfully, I have the previous 8 on disc, so I can do that to tide me over, but I'm really hungering for some new stupid stunts.

I've looked forward to seeing Soul in theaters, so I hope I'll still be able to see it in June. I don't really care if I have to rent it on a device to see it.

i hope the 2nd det. pikachu isn't on list for december 2021 to February 2022 is going next on that list.

Yea. A lot of anime has been delayed as well. I was waiting patiently for Kaguya Sama Love is War Season 2, but now I am going to have to wait longer cause it has been postponed. When this is all over we will have way too much to watch because of the postponements.

I honestly loved the first movie so much. So happy they decided to make a new one. I will definitely go see that when I get the chance.

I noticed that the new Scooby-Doo movie is still being released this Friday but online, and I'm starting to wonder why more movies don't go this route. Sure, there's a bunch of movies that need to be experienced in theaters or cost too much to go straight to the internet, but there's plenty of movies out there that don't need to be delayed by months.

Right! A lot of movies do not need to be delayed. I enjoyed watching Onward which went straight to digital copies (because you know Disney can afford it).

I'm sad that apparently the 3rd Spongebob movie is going to be delayed though.

There's actually a ton of movies that I've been looking forward to which are now delayed... granted, a lot of them are anime movies so I'm not sure they 100% fit the bill here, but the sentiment is the same. I think in most cases the creators just want to secure as much money as possible by waiting for the coronavirus to die down and let as many people buy tickets and all as possible. It's definitely nothing (or at least, very little) to do with the actual production of the movies.

and games as well was delaying too. no delay for det. pikachu 2 is odd. i guess between december 2021 to February 2022 it was going come out for part 2 of det. pikachu is new to me now.

So we were supposed to have some form of normalcy over the last month and a half when so many movie theaters began opening up again, including the 2 big ones in AMC and Regal. I went to like 10 movies myself since the start of September. But even with theaters open, studios still want to push things back. Wonder Woman was pushed back by a couple months, Black Widow was pushed back until next year, Milan and Soul were both made digital only and those were all announced AFTER theaters opened.

On the bright side, filming has been starting upon again, the next Spider-Man movie was filming near me last week.
