Does Manga count as books?

I struggled with which section to put this in, but I didn't want to clutter up the Anime/Manga section, so I want to ask it here. When I talk to people about this subject, they seem to have varying opinions, but I've been told by people who don't read Manga that they should count as books. However, it takes so little effort to read one, would I really wanna answer Dragon Ball volume 16 as the last book I read?
Thinking of them as books makes me feel better about myself because I don't read a lot and it helps me pretend I do. But I'm really not sure that's the appropriate way to address them.

Care to weigh in?

Personally I'd just classify them along with comic books and graphic novels. Pretty much the same, especially with the thicker graphic novels.

Manga is a graphic novel essentially and it's right in the name so yes I would consider it as a book.

I would say that they are too like comic books to be anything but considered that for the action but not all manga are action based so graphic novel is more accurate.

Basically, if it's something that you buy either physically or digitally on a e-reader (or similar devices), and the whole book has a particular theme to it, then it's considered a "book"

However if someone were to ask me what the last book I read was I wouldn't answer with the name of a manga. I don't think anyone would really, some maybe because they'd prefer that side of their life to remain private or others because they don't even think of them when someone mentions a book.

Graphic novels will always be scrutinized for their comparison to simple comic books. The truth of the matter is, it makes no difference if the story is simple or illustrations take up the page, you see the binding, you see people reading it with deep interest, it's a book.
