I am in the mood to play some stealth games. The problem is that I was never good at them because my introduction to them were (presumably) more difficult games like Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid 3.

So, are there any good PlayStation 2 (preferred over PlayStation 1, if possible) stealth games aimed more at beginners so that I can work my way into the genre before moving on?

For difficulty, game knowledge plays a key factor.
Obviously, the more you know about the events,
enemy placements, patrol patterns, the game can start to feel easy.

I used to suck horribly at Metal Gear, but I looked more into it,
and I gradually got better. A lot of it was just practice.

Not sure if you've already played it since you mentioned 3
but not 2, but Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty I think is easier than MSG3.

You don't have to worry about how fast you're running,
how you look compared to the environment,
and this is the first game that introduced first person aiming
(It was in the PS1 game too but it wasn't very good)
and the introduction of the tranquilizer gun.
You will learn to get very good at making precise headshots.

On a lighter note, the Sly series has stealth as more of
a game feature than the overall focus of the game.
Stealth/platformer hybrid. I think you might be more interested in this.
Another game you might want to check out is Beyond Good & Evil 1,
though I can't really speak on behalf of it as I just haven't played it.

Stealth in games in a finicky subject.
A lot of games just have stealth as a mechanic, and nothing more.
Also some games that are listed as stealth feel a lot more like an action game
as you are constantly having gunfights and that's not really what I'd call stealth...

My apologies if you've already played these games.
You asked for easy games so I'm holding back.
The difficulty can have very mixed reception.

M4g1cW4rr10r : Thanks for the suggestions. I was intentionally vague in hopes of hearing all suggestions and not only ones based on games I have played. Even I would not know what I would like if I only used past games a guide.

I had hoped more people would respond here, though.

There really aren't all that many stealth games for Playstation/PS2 as far as I can recall. You might try Deus Ex - stealth is generally encouraged but I don't think there are any areas where it's absolutely required so you're doomed if you get seen. As M4g1c said, the Sly series has stealth as a definite feature but it's an action platformer at heart. Hitman: Blood Money is another option if you can find it, but it may be a bit tricky.

Selden : I was going to bring up Deus Ex, but considered against it.

Deus Ex (DX, Deus Ex 2000) is a very good game,
but the PS2 version is not that good of a port,
but I might as well now that you brought it up.

The PS2 version is a very different game than the PC version.
A lot of large areas have been cut up and changed to compensate
for hardware and even then there are framerate issues.
However, while the quality of textures have been reduced,
there is actually more detail in some areas.
UI has been compressed like Invisible War,
but it's much easier to use than in Invisible War.
Very impressive to see the complexity of a game that
uses a lot of keyboard buttons mapped to a controller.

I beat this game without kills (debatable, destroyed robots)
or knockouts on the highest difficulty, but not stealthily,
and they clearly didn't intend for me to avoid enemies.
I tried to sneak around when I could,
but the game forces alerts and boss fights on you,
and I had to wade through a lot of gunfire to get through.
It's more about making choices when you can.
Stealth doesn't always let you get through everything here.

You can run away from almost all the bosses. Almost.
There are a couple bosses you have to defeat to progress,
but some exploits allowed me to spare their lives.
Also, I may or may not have had a boss kill them self with their own explosives.

This is a game I would strongly recommend getting on the PC over the PS2 version.

M4g1cW4rr10r : Huh. I didn't know the PS2 version was cut that heavily.

I got through with one kill - if there's a way to avoid killing Anna Navarre in the PC version, I couldn't find it. I don't think I actually managed to avoid being spotted ever, but I got pretty close (aside from the handful of forced encounters like Gunther and that one guy who keeps coming back to attack you if you didn't kill him) not counting the times I tranquilized a guy and then ran for it while he chased me, stopping every few steps to flinch. I really don't think you can count that as being spotted, they should have made the tranquilizers instant knockouts instead... or at worst, the enemy isn't aware they've been hit with it until they collapse.

Selden :

Yeah, the crossbow is not very good.
Even if you shoot them from a million miles away,
they still always seem to home right on you.
The much better tactic is to just run up from behind them
and either taze them or shoot pepper spray
in their face before the alert music plays.

The trick I used for Anna was to stack up boxes from below
the handrail using the super strength augment,
throw a gas grenade to section her movement path
to near the locked door, then throw a pulse or EMP
to get her to move into the door, opening it.
Then you can just leave the building without fighting her.

Alternatively, you can damage her just enough so she stops
attacking you and tries to run away, then use the potted
plants and flags to guide her movement.

Spoiler:
Gunther still contacts you after exiting the building
acting like you killed Anna, and will still attack you later,
since you were meant to defeat her to get the key,
which only makes his motivations after not very convincing.

I'd consider trying MGS3 again, perhaps at a lower difficulty. It's one of the greatest games out there, which is why I want to push it lmao. I wouldn't play MGS2 because you need heavy knowledge from 1 to understand what's even going on; with 3 you don't need to know anything as it backtracks on the timeline.

Herdy Gerdy counts as a stealth game, and it's probably meant for kids. Not sure if it's easy or not, but hey, you get to sneak around a bear, now that's quality entertainment!

Manhunt is a lesser-known Rockstar game that is very good, and is a stealth game. I wouldn't call it "easy", though, but it's definitely manageable. Maybe you'd like it.

I guess it would really depend on your tastes more than anything else but however, I've heard that metal gear is quite good although I'm not too sure how much other than a friend of mine was basically glued to it days on end so I'd recommend looking into it yourself.

M4g1cW4rr10r : I own both Deus Ex on the Playstation 2 and PC, and definitely would rather play the PC version, but for what it is on console. I don't think it's that bad.

As for the original post. Splinter Cell is a nice beginner game. Metal Gear Solid 2 is another fun one. Manhunt, which was mentioned by taterii is something that I find to be very enjoyable (and one of my favorite games from Rockstar)
