Metroid Prime Trilogy Featured Review

Metroid Prime Trilogy Review by: FaithFighter - 9.5/10

A hungering, corrupting energy force. It's the Metroid Prime Trilogy!
All right, I have returned. While I wanted to do these games individually, it looks like people have already gotten to them first, so here we go. I just recently discovered how much fun metroid can be a few months ago. I first played Metroid Zero Mission on vizzed, and I absolutely loved it! Naturally, when I saw this little treasure at GameStop, there just was not any way that I could pass it up. Everything about this set mesmerized me. Even the packaging on the outside! Fortunately for me, I also got the Metroid Prime story pamphlet, as a new Metroid fan...I would have been completely lost without it! My dates would have been off and everything! The one I picked up has a very sharp metal case that to me added to the coolness of the whole deal. I will tell you, when I first boarded the pirate frigate, I had no idea what I was getting myself into and the space pirates actually scared me for a bit. (i'm pretty sure that is not how they looked before!) Anyways, I am getting a bit off the course here. I was oh so ready to dive into these games. Being the kind of gamer that I am, I struggled between trying them all out and playing them through one at a time. Oh, boy...staying on track with this is going to be harder than I thought! I'd better get going!

Graphics: The graphics are completely stunning. You got to remember that I had come off of the classic 2d layouts, I figured that there would be a little middle ground! No, retro shot us straight to first person! While I am not the biggest fan of this style, it does have its advantages. Like when you are falling down a pit and are blasting Ridley beneath you! Oh! That is a moment in gaming to live for! Fighting the chozo "ghosts" in Prime 1 also makes it worthwhile. Overall, the style itself immerses you more into the action than my favorite style, which is the 3d fighting and platforming action of Metroid Other M. (It's time you all quit hating on it! It does have some merit! There I go again!) Prime 2 is simply amazing when it comes to overall graphics--especially for the dark Aether. One of my favorite parts was how they had the conditions of both dimensions change as you took energy from the dark side and brought it to the light. One of my favorite parts on the entire discs was planet Phazee. Wow! This planet was so ugly and slimy and sludgy; yet it was amazingly beautiful and awesome. How the graphics adjusted for the different visors that you collected for the game was awesome. There is one visor I really have to praise retro for. That would be the thermal visor for metroid prime one. Their execution of this visor was detatiled and flawless. Don't get it. Go to magmoor caverns and activate it! Everything will appear such a bright yellow, you can practically feel the heat. When you go to Phendrena plains, everything is darker when you use this visor. I just felt that they had done an awesome job paying attention to that. One other thing that I like was the vision change in hyper mode from Metroid Prime three. It makes it seem like you are being swallowed up in powerful energy, and is really quite amazing. I must say that I have been impressed with the games that I know retro worked on. They really know how to make a good game. The out of this galaxy graphics of this game have awed me again and again, they earn a 10.

Sound: This is another awesome department! The sound in this game is great, from the sounds of your beams to the music of the game, to the tune change when you run into a room with a bunch of space pirates. I love how they made different sounds for the beams, that was really a good detail that I feel has been overlooked in other games. They always seem to have the exact same sound, but that is definitely not true here. Of course, you have the typical sounds for your ordinary power beam, but it really starts to get interesting when you get your hands on the wave, ice and plasma beams in prime 1, and the dark, light and, annihalator beams in prime 2. The ice and dark beams sound somewhat similar, but not exactly the same. The dark beam sounds as though the bullet is going to open a black hole...to me at least. The ice beam sounds crystal almost, and as though it can freeze the very air it travels through. Your plasma beam has one of the best sounds ever. It sounds like a piercing burst of flame that just has such a satisfying sound. I enjoy the fact that when you scorch one of the enemies, you can hear a sound similar to a pile of ashes falling down. When you freeze an enemy, you can hear the ice crackling. The music is some of the best ever for metroid. As always, the best music seems to be around Ridley! I guess that overall, I just love that tune. Well, Retro remixed the original Ridley theme to make it fit his new upgrades. Now this beast is like a cybermetal creation, as if he was not bad enough before! The music fits this very well, as it sounds like a techno-mechanical remix that just hits it right on target. A lot of other good music exists throughout the games, such as that of the Emperor Ing. That was some intense dark alien sounding music. There is so much more that could probably be said, but I just can't remember it all...oh yeah, Metroid prime 2. Those mini dinosaur creatures that you come across in the flooded lands. They look ferocious enough to startle me when they charge at me, but the biggest thing that scares me about these guys is the awful snap that their jaws make! Ow! That just sounds like that would hurt! I think that the creators paid a lot of attention to detail, here as well. With all that said, the sound absolutely gets a 10.

Addictiveness: giving this department any less than a 10 would be unfair. You have 3 awesome metroid games combined into one! The graphics and sounds are awesome. The first person really worked quite well for the exploration side of the game. There is just so much in every game that you can find. The fact that you can scan objects in the world around you really puts the added hunter element in there. You feel as though you are the only hunter that can stop these alien threats...even in Prime 3. Overall, these games are so addicting on their own, and when you combine it into one, you just got a monster of addictiveness! Yes, this deserves a 10.

Story: The story of these games is very good. There are so many portions that I absolutely love. I'll start with the story moments of Prime 1. You board a space pirate vessel. That in itself is pretty amazing. As you begin to explore it, you discover what these guys have been up to. You also see several pirates that are completely dead, or are severlely wounded. That really made me start to wonder. Then you find the answer. The space pirates created their own monster! The Parasite queen! You defeat her, but she falls into the reactor core, and you start running to get out. Who else should stand in your way except Meta-Ridley? You follow him down to the planet and start exploring. The story continues to develop as you play the game, and depending on how into you are in scanning, you can get a lot of backstory tidbits, as well as thoughts from the space pirates. That's pretty cool! Before I spoil too much, I'll move on  to the second one. The story is basically that the federation discovered the Space Pirates and gave chase...to planet aether, a planet that has been ravaged by war. Neither the space pirates nor the federation know what is going on down there, and the Ing attack and destroy the federation dispatch. The space pirates, huddle down, trying not to get noticed too much, but their hunger for power knows no limits. When samus shows up, she enters a portal to dark aether, where she finds...Dark Samus? (If it was not for that pamphlet, I would have no idea how this being came about.) She seems to be absorbing as much phazon as she can. They face off a little here, but the relentless Ing show up and steal most of her power suit abilities. With a planet that was torn in half by the phazon, and her enemies their, as well as her allies. It's up to Samus to help the alien race known as the Luminoth--most of whom are in a deep state of stasis sleep to prevent the entire race being wiped out forever--defeat the Ing and eliminate the Dark Aether by taking back all of its planetary energy. There are a lot of epic scenes throughout this game, and everything was very well done. Now, Prime 3: corruption. Dark Samus now controls the source of the phazon, one controlled by phazon is one controlled by her. This story was 100% epic, as two unstoppable forces battle it out, and Samus breaks the hold of phazon over several planets. This game had the best story of the entire series as your friends turn foes and you struggle to survive on the planet Phazee. This is by far the biggest story ever to hit the metroid. I hope that we can get another like it. Overall, the story gets a 10.

Depth: All three prime games are very deep. But metroid prime 2 has to be the deepest in my opinion. You are exploring an entire planet, but it has two dimensions! Enemies can be anywhere, and the Ing never stop. So you really do not have any clue what you are going to face when you walk into a room! The hunt for all the keys to the sky temple was very tricky to me, and it took a lot for me to figure out just how to use the map to find the spot that I had to get to. The amazing part of this game was its labyrinth qualities. Back and forth, up and down. I had to use that map so much it was crazy! The second deepest game is Metroid prime three, just for the fact that there are 4 planets that you can explore, plus the federation's Valhalla, and the planet Phazee. I was shocked when I found a portal to another section of planet Bryyo! The least deep game, but still huge, was Metroid Prime 1. You travel to so many areas in the planet, it is absolutely incredible. The back and forth element is also present here, mainly because it takes forever to get a tip of where you need to go next. (this is really true in all of them, but you have a better idea of where you should be in the other two.) These are some of the biggest games that I have played. I cannot really say that up until this point I have extensively explored alien planets and worlds. There are a lot of items to find and multiple difficulties to try. The depth would absolutely get a 9.

Difficulty: Unlike most games, Metroid tends to be a series where it gets easier as you advance farther into the game. Why do I say that? Because as you go farther into the game, you find more and more missiles, weapons, and energy tanks, this makes the boss battles a bit less intimidating. For instance, I never once died on Meta-Ridley in prime 1. Why? I had like ten energy tanks! I could literally just stand there and just take punches for at least thirty seconds if I had wanted to! But even with this, Metroid is still fiercly difficult for me. Probably the hardest boss that I faced was the Omega Pirate. That guy was so tough for me! I was stuck on that guy for a few hours! I have become a much better game...oddly enough for jumping back into video games after a two year recess...so I really feel that even though it only took me about a month and a half to finish all three collectively, that these are some of the toughest games around. I certainly think that a 9 for difficulty is well earned by this series.

Overall: My calculations give this set an overall 9.5 rating. The metroid Prime series is an exciting series and provides something different for the metroid fans to get into. It has a lot of good things going for it, such as great sound, graphics, story, depth, and really, everything else. It was and is a lot of fun for me to play, and there are a lot of things that I still have not been able to figure out. This game is definitely worth a play, although I would say that, it should be reseved for the teens and up just because some of the death scenes that you find throughout. Other than that, I would say that this series makes for the cleanest action/shooter game series ever in history!
