An example of fun over substance, good in small doses endings
The Legend of Kage. A fast paced action scroller. On paper (or words in this case) its not so much. The story is a little unconventional, a ninja going to rescue a japanese princess from a horde of enemy ninjas and fire-breathing monks. Fire breathing monks sound pretty different. The game follows through on its action promise in that it starts as soon as you see her kidnapped, and goes right until you rescue her. That is your story, its not much, but at least it wastes no time. Rescue her!
Pixel people and limited sounds
Kage doesn't look like much, but man can you jump. Giant tree in front of you, no sweat, watch me climb up these branches by leaps alone. He looks a little crude, no face, but he has some fast animation when he swings his sword, so its not a total loss. The princess also has no face or eyes, so this isn't a game for graphics. Or sounds, its one song played through the whole game. The noisy fire from the monks and the sound when your sword blocks a shuriken are nice, if simple. The enemy ninjas and monks also have no noticeable eyes - and they are your only enemy types. Two! All you get!
The Stages
There are 4 stages to clear, thats it. You will face a ghastly number of ninjas, and upon killing so many foes on two levels, or reaching the end of the other two, you clear the game, or so you think. Back to the beginning for you as there is no ending.
Man this game must sound pretty bad! Its got crude graphics, one note sound, and is very short! What does it have going for it?
Kage is to ninjas what a tornado is to trailer parks. The simple controls are done perfectly. He runs everywhere, no walking in a game about pursuit and rescue! You can throw stars (in all directions) with one button, or use your sword to defend or attack with the other - all while on the move. Kage's giant jump can reveal hidden scrolls that cause instant death to foes or power him up, making his shuriken bigger and his outfit change color and take more hits to kill him. Having so many enemies come at you from all directions and not only holding them off on the ground but 20' in the air? Priceless. That is what Kage brings, you have easy to use combat and lots of fast combat. When you're blocking melee shots, throwing a star at the enemy above you, and then jumping to take on two more ninjas in the trees -- its pretty fun, even if you can rescue the princess in less than 10 minutes.
