Kirby Finally Returned to Dream Land!   gamerforlifefor..
After Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, home console Kirby games started taking a less traditional direction, such as the Gamecube racer Kirby's Air Ride and the Wii title Kirby's Epic Yarn. It wasn't until 11 years after Kirby 64 was released that HAL Laboratory would make another traditional title for a home console, which is Kirby's Return to Dreamland for the Wii. The game was originally planned for the Gamecube in 2005, but it was delayed and moved to the Wii, and was finally released in 2011. The game was popular enough to earn it's way onto the North American Wii U EShop last month. How does this game compare to previous titles in the series? I'll tell you by making this review.
Graphics: 9/10 As far as visuals go, Kirby's Return to Dreamland looks as good as any other major Wii title. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous, everything from the grassy stages in Cookie Country to the snowy levels of White Wafers, and even the volcanic stages of Dangerous Dinner show just how great Wii games can look. Along with the visually appealing stages, the character models are some of the best that the series has had. All of Kirby's powerups look better than they had in the past, and some of the new powerups such as Kirby's Super Abilities look absolutely stunning. From the Monster Flame (which looks like a dragon), to the Ultra Sword, all of these new powerups are wonderful to look at, and so much better to use. Overall, the graphics may not be as revolutionary as Super Mario Galaxy or as unbelievable as Xenoblade Chronicles, but the visuals are great enough for me to give the graphics a 9.
Sound: 8/10 Kirby's Return to Dreamland offers a good soundtrack that has a good mix of cheery music, as well as some intense music towards the end, pretty much what you'd expect a Kirby game to have. The Final Boss themes and the Galacta Knight theme are the 2 best tracks in the game, both are perfect for the parts where they are played, and are some of the best music in the Kirby series. The rest of the soundtrack is nice to listen to as well, but it's not as dynamic as the Super Mario Galaxy, Xenoblade Chronicles, or Super Smash Bros Brawl. The soundtrack is still good enough to get an 8 from me though.
Addictiveness: 8/10
Kirby's Return to Dreamland is as fun to play as any other game in the Kirby series. There's 28 different abilities that Kirby can use, from classics like Sword Kirby to some new ones such as Water Kirby, which allows Kirby to surf on water and is also helpful when you're underwater. Some other new abilities are Whip, Spear, and Leaf Kirby. Those abilities don't do much to separate it from previous titles. Fortunately, 4 of Kirby's new abilities are what are known as Super abilities, which are enhanced versions of some of Kirby's classic abilities that can be used to take out many enemies at once, and to progress through certain stages. These super abilities are the only new feature that truly separates Kirby's Return to Dream Land from previous games in the series. Kirby 64's combining abilities feature was a far more innovative feature than this game's super abilities. Overall, Kirby's Return to Dream Land provides some entertaining gameplay, but the lack of innovation is a big reason why I'm not giving the addictiveness score a higher score than 8.
Story: 6/10 The storyline begins when a mysterious ship called the Lor crashlands on Dream Land. Kirby along with King Dedede, Meta Knight, and Waddle Dee investigate, and they find a guy named Magalor inside. He tells them that he needs their help to find the pieces of his ship that got scattered across Dreamland, and Kirby agrees to help him. So Kirby and his friends must now travel through Dreamland to find the missing ship parts so that Magalor's ship can get fixed and they can all travel to his world. The plot is ok, but there have been better storylines in the Kirby series, such as in Kirby 64. There is a plot twist towards the end, which gives me a good reason to give the story a 6 instead of a 5.
Depth: 5/10 Kirby's Return to Dreamland offers a good amount of content to unlock and to play. Story mode has 7 worlds, each world has somewhere between 3-5 levels each and a boss at the end of each world. There's also an 8th world with 1 level and a boss as well. There are over 120 collectibles spread across each level called energy spheres. Collecting them will unlock certain minigames, such as Ninja Dojo and Scope Shot. Besides the story mode and minigames, there's the arena mode. Overall, this game doesn't have the amount of levels that other platforming games such as Super Mario Galaxy have, but it does have more extra content than Kirby 64 did. For that reason, I'm giving the depth a 5.
Difficulty: 2/10 Kirby's Return to Dreamland is one of the easier Wii titles out there. The levels for the most part are pretty easy to beat, and the energy spheres found throughout the game aren't hard to find and are easy to get to. Out of the 120 energy spheres found throughout the game, there was only about 3 that gave me any kind of trouble whatsoever. The bosses aren't very difficult either. Even the final boss isn't challenging if you're using Fighter Kirby. If you're looking for a challenging Wii platformer, then Kirby's Return to Dreamland won't satisfy your cravings. For these reasons, I'm giving the difficulty a 2.
Overall Score: 8/10 Kirby's Return to Dreamland is one of the better platforming games on the Wii. It offers great visuals, a great soundtrack, and gameplay that all platforming fans can enjoy. If it wasn't for the lack of innovative features to set this game apart from previous games in the series, and the fact that the game barely provides a challenge, especially boss battles I'd give this game a higher score. Overall though, Kirby's Return to Dream Land is one of the better platforming games you'll find on the Wii. For these reasons, I'm giving this game an 8 out of 10.

Kirby's Return To Dreamland   Barathemos

Kirby's Return To Dreamland, this game, well, it was just great. If you take one of the best game characters of all time and combine that wish on of the best game systems ever, what do you get? Well, it seems to me like you get Kirby's Return To Dreamland. This game it one of my favorites for the will because it just has so many good parts to it. I feel like this game is one of those where you start to play, and time just shoots by. When I first got this game, I spent a lot of money to buy it, but when I got home to play it, I knew is was great the moment that I started to play it. The game is very well thought out and was carefully planned so that it would be the best it could be. Now, just sit back and enjoy my review!
Overall: 9.7
This game is a masterpiece. Everything about this game will charm you from the start to the end. There are multiple save files, there are multiple parts on that save file such as an extra game and The Arena. In order to complete the game you have to finish these. Also, in the place craft that you stat in, there is a mini game for a bunch of the different copy abilities and there are mini games for just fun. Now, while I think this game is great it has a small amount of flaws that brings it down to a 9.7. Now that I am done with that, I will move on.
Graphics: 10
The graphics look great. The whole game just looks great. Kirby, the player 2 playable characters, all of the enemies, all of the backgrounds, the landscape,  it all looks great! The graphics for thins game look so smooth, it just blends together well with the rest of the game. This is one of the best parts for me because I am used to the graphics from old Pokémon game, I but loved how good the game looked! All of the levels look great, even if it is from desert to lake to snow, they did a great job making it all blend.  Now on to the animation part of this section. The animation for this game is GREAT. The animation of Kirby Getting a copy, or super copy, ability looks really smooth and looked like it took quite a bit of time. With all that this game has that is great, graphics will have to be one of them, play it and you will see!
Sound: 10
Oh the sound. This is not exactly my favorite part in a review. But, I have to talk about the game right? Well, the soundtrack for this game is great. The people who made these Kirby games, really wanted to put in some great music. The music for a normal Kirby game, not just this one, is really great! All of the themes from a Kirby game, minus a few, are great! This game did a great job of getting all of the great music down and putting it into this game. When you play a game, you don't want to play in silence, so you want to hear a good soundtrack, that is the one main thing that the people of Kirby do understand and get right.
Addictiveness: 9
This game is quite addicting. Once you play it for the first time, you will want to play it again. And also, the first time you play, you will want to play for quite a long time. The game is just so fun that you will want to just keep having that same felling of happiness. You will always want that feeling, and that is what this game will give to you. When you play a game, you want it to be a super fun game that you won't just want to return right after you play it once, and that is what this game does for you. I would really say that it is super addicting.
Story: 8
The story for this game is fun. Alright, watch out, SPOLIER ALERT. So the story is that some guy ( a little alien thing ) crashes his ship down on Dreamland. Kirby then tries to help repair his ship so he can fly away. You go all around Dreamland to get the parts for his ship and you rebuild it and he flies away with you to a different planet. I will not give away the rest of the game but I will tell you that it is a thrill. The game has a great story that will have you thinking about it from the start of the game, to the end of it. With a story this good, you don't want to miss it.
Depth: 8
There is a lot to do in this game, but there is not too much. You have the normal story, two lands and a final boss, plus normal bosses at the end of each level, and you have the mini games with the different abilities, and there are also the mini games with made out games, no abilities. There is also an extra game on each of the save files and there is the Arena that you will complete near the end of the game. So, there is a lot to do in this game, but there is not enough to do to have it as a 10.
Difficulty: 6
This game, is what I call a standard game in the difficulty section. What I mean by that is that it is one of those games that is not too hard, and not to easy. You will have a struggle with some parts in the game, like the final boss, but mostly it is a pretty easy game to play and complete. This game is not so easy you will be done in an hour but it is not as hard as one that you will never complete.
Overall, this was a very good game that I would say to get if you have a Wii. If you don't have a Wii, I would recommend getting one. The game is so great that it got a 9,6 overall, which is super high for me, so, let that tell you something. I hoped you enjoyed reading my review, and I hope that you will read my others. Now, if you get the game, I wish you the best of luck.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Review   totaldramaman2
Overall - 9.2
Kirby's Return to Dream Land is the newest game in the Kirby series as of the writing of this review. It seems to be a cross between Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. With four player support, great graphics and sound, it comes together to make one of the best sidescrolling/platforming games available on the Nintendo Wii. Although it doesn't have the whole "ten Kirbys" or "I'm made of yarn" gameplay, it's still one of, in my opinion, the best Kirby games.
Graphics - 9
The graphics for this game look very nice. The backgrounds suit the levels almost perfectly, especially in Level 3, Onion Ocean, and in underground caves. That's not to say the main graphics aren't nice. They look a lot like New Super Mario Bros Wii, almost to the point where some models and textures seem to be ripped directly from it, and some of the beach sand. From snow levels, to deserts, to water, it all looks really nice, and if you're sensitive about graphics, you will love this game.
Sound - 9
The music in Kirby games seems to always be good. From Block Ball, to Mass Attack, to Dream Land 3, they all have excellent soundtracks. So good, in fact, I think that they try to make Kirby music great intentionally, like the Mega Man series. Even the sound of a Game Over is very catchy. It doesn't remix much previous Kirby music like The Amazing Mirror did, but orginal music still sounds very good, especially in this game.
Addictiveness - 10
The game is quite addicting. Lat time I played it, I got two worlds done in one sitting. The game isn't overly easy, but that's a true sign of a good game. When you WANT to keep going, not when the game forces you because it doesn't let you save enough. There are three to five gears in each stage, similar to Star Coins in New Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario 3D Land. The game challenges you to get them all, and some of the challenges are just the right amount of difficulty that it makes you want to try until the Virtual Boy 2 is released... which is good.
Story - 9
I can't explain much about the story in case of spoilers, but basically, Kirby is being chased by King Dedede, Meta Knight, and a Waddle Dee over a cake. Nintendo + Cake = best story ever, says Super Mario 64, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Kirby's Return to Dream Land, singing together like a chorus. Well, anyways, you meet someone in a broken ship named Magolor. Kirby cheers him up and promises to help him. They go across the Pop Star, finding all of the pieces of the ship. Nintendo + build my ship = best story ever, sings Super Mario Galaxy, Pikmin, and K-you get the point. Anyways, Magolor then takes them to his home planet, Halcandra, where Worlds 6 and 7 are. I can't say anything else, but there is a World 8.
Depth - 8
There are, as I mentioned 8 worlds to this game, each of them, like New Super Mario Bros Wii, have a theme. Level 1 is grassy, Level 2 is  a desert, Level 3 is a beach, Level 4 is a snowland, Level 5 is a tower, Level 6 is industrialized, and Level 7 is a volcano. Each of them have unique levels, with all sorts of Copy Abilities, such as Water, Beam, Leaf, Bomb, Spear, Ninja, Ice, High Jump, and many more. On top of that, there are many minigames you can find in Magalor's ship. It's not overly long, but if you want to beat it in a month, you should try playing quite a bit per week, due to the length of the game.
Difficulty - 8
Like any good game, the game progressively gets harder. There all sorts of challenge levels that you get when you get Ultra Copy Abilities, in which you fight Sphere Demons that carry two gears. Make sure you're Kirby is a smart one, because he's the one who depends on your life, and on your Demon Sphere fights. If you're playing multi-player. Player 1 CAN NOT DIE. Otherwise everyone dies... that... why?
CONCLUSION
Overall, Kirby's Return to Dream Land is a great game, resembling New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and being a great platformer. This easily should be in anyone's Wii collection, even if you have Kirby's Epic Yarn. With excellent graphics, music, addictiveness, and 4 player cooperative mode, Kirby multiplayer deaths aside, this is an all-around great game, and if you don't have this, you should really consider getting it.

The Dream never dies   Uzar
Kirby Kirby Kirby he's the guy you should know! Kirby Kirby! Kir-...Wait, no time for that. Its time for another review!
Kirby's Return To Dreamland. Its a really fun game. It took 12 years to make, so it better be phenomenal, right?! Well...Sort of. The game is basically Kirby's Super Star, in terms of gameplay. Only with 3D character models, and a new story. Oh, and some super copy abilities!
OVERALL: 9
This is a pretty decent game overall. The only major problem was I thought it was a bit too easy. But everyone needs to play a nice easy game every now and then. The multiplayer is pretty fun too! Having all four Kirbys (Kirbies?) running around, or one Kirby, Meta Knight, King Dedede, and a (particularly awesome) Waddle Dee. Or any combination of those. Everything about the game is just so cheery and fun, well, the final boss is kind of a jerk, but outside him, it is.
GRAPHICS: 9
The game looks pretty good. The animations are smooth too. They put a lot of effort into the backgrounds, which makes the levels seem all that much better. They stand pretty fair among other Wii titles. Not the greatest, but better than most.
SOUND: 9
I know this rating is a bit high, but lots of the music is stuck in my head. Anyway, the background music is pretty good. Some would say its a bit simple, but I like simple sometimes. The sound effects are mainly taken straight from Kirby's Super Star, but with a few new effects for the copy abilities that weren't in Super Star, like Whip, Water, and all the Mega Copy Abilities. The bosses have sounds all their own also.
ADDICTIVENESS: 7
This game is pretty fun, good enough to carry you through a playthrough or three. And there are minigames and bonuses that will make you want to keep playing. But, sadly, the game can get stale if you play long enough. But its fun while it lasts.
STORY: 7
The story isn't TOO complex. There are a few decent plot twists along the way though. Basically, the story is that Kirby was hanging around. Racing Dedede and Bandana Waddle Dee, while Meta Knight reads a book, in full armor. And then A GIANT SPACESHIP COMES OUT OF NOWHERE AND JUST BARELY CRASHES INTO THEM!!! AAAAAHHHHHHH!1! But Kirby, being the unstoppable puffball he is, fearlessly goes into the ship to see what's up. There he meets Magolor, who tells Kirby that he's from the planet Halcandra. And his ship is named the Lor Starcutter. And in the crash, the Lor has lost all 120 power spheres, and all the important parts of the ship! Without them he can't get home. Kirby, always happy to help, offers to get the spheres back for him. And all the others agree also. But how did the ship crash in the first place? Why is one of the bosses a Goku parody? What's with the portals to another dimension opening up everywhere?
I'd tell you, but it seems I wasn't supposed to put spoilers in the reviews. :V
DEPTH: 7
The game isn't really all that deep. A few levels have some pretty well hidden secrets though, and getting all the power spheres involves going a different way through some levels. But sadly, there aren't very many of them. But the amount of attacks each copy ability has is pretty impressive when you think about it. The depth, or lack of depth at times, makes it by no means a bad game. There's a New Game + mode on this, after you beat the game, it gives you the option to replay the game, with a few more challenges.
DIFFICULTY: 8
Well, its not the easiest game I've ever played. But it can be pretty smooth sailing if you know what you're doing. But, unlike Donkey Kong Country Returns, or New Super Mario Brothers, this revival of a side scroller series won't offer to let the game beat itself for you if you die too many times. So its not the easiest thing out there if you really are having trouble with it. There is also a New Game + mode on it, once you beat the game, you get to do it again, only everything becomes much harder. There is also an unlockable Arena Mode. Where you fight all of the bosses, and minibosses. And there is a True Arena, where you fight the bosses and minibosses from New Game +, an extra final boss, and a surprise fight with a fan favorite.

Kirby's Return to Super Star   Snu
Surprise is a very bittersweet thing. Some surprises are good. Your friends just threw a surprise party? Awesome! But some surprises... they catch us off guard, throw us into turmoil and cause grief. Your best friend reveals they were using you to get close to another friend? How horrible!!
One good surprise Kirby fans got way back in 2005 was the announcement of a new Kirby game for the gamecube, Kirby's Journey. Unfortunately the game went through a bit of development hell and got cancelled and reannounced three times under different names. Finally after six years, Kirby's Return to Dreamland took a few elements from the cancelled Gamecube games and was released for the Wii in 2011. The question is, 'Was the wait worth it?'
Well... you'll see.
~Delicious Graphics~
Kirby games have this advantage where they are often made near the end of a system's life, so they have the advantage of knowing exactly what the hardware is capable of in terms of graphics and put that info to good use. You may sneak a glance at a screenshot and think I'm crazy for thinking it's anything special, but if you look around at all the different stages and pay attention to all the details in the background and tileset, you'll get an idea of what I mean. They might not push the boundaries or anything, but they still look stunning. Even the hub worlds have little areas to look around, even if nothing in particular is around.
Nutty Noon in particular looks amazing. The gorgeous sunset set in the background of some ancient stone structure... Beautiful.
~A return indeed, though it's still different~
As someone who has been a staunch fan of Air Ride's soundtrack, this game... this game blew Air Ride out of the water with its OST. There isn't quite as much variety in tone as Air Ride has, but unlike Air Ride, it manages to retain a feeling of childish nostalgia without using half of the soundtrack from Super Star. The instrument range is also fantastic, lending itself to both the mechanical tensity of Egg Engines and the more cheerful western style of Raisin Ruins easily. It's a variety that's always appreciated.
As far as some standout pieces, many people have heard CROWNED or The Adventure Begins, but have you listened to Steel Station or Chilly Area? Chilly Area plays more on the serenity of snow (something rare for the playful Kirby), and may remind some long time Kirby goers of Crystal Shards' Shiver Star.
Steel Station also has a somewhat dark tone to it, but it's far more upbeat, like you're just moving along like a machine at this point. It's definitely catchier (And I prefer it to Factory Investigation, shh!) but still holds a similar tone to Chilly Area.
It's variety and nostalgia in a way that I'm a-okay with.
~A cute, if somewhat familiar story~
It starts off as just another day in Dreamland; Kirby's protecting his cake from Dedede, Bandana Dee is trying to help his King, and Metaknight is just casually reading a book and ignoring everything. Suddenly, a bright light in the sky interrupts the usual chaos and a starship appears out of nowhere. Parts are strewn everywhere and the ship crash lands nearby.
When the foursome go to check it out, they find a distraught little alien named Magolor, who is now stranded away from his home, Helcandria, thanks to a fearsome dragon named Landia. In order to get back, he needs all 5 of his ship parts and as many energy spheres as Kirby and the gang can find.
Kirby, being the... uh... kind soul that he is, offers to help Magolor rebuild his ship, the Lor Starcutter, AND defeat the evil Landia.
So begins the adventure to help the little alien!
... But is it really that simple?
Long story short, there is a twist or two in this game, and whether you know it or not depends on your exposure to Return to Dreamland. If you've seen it around youtube at all, you probably know what it is already, but on the off chance you haven't, don't soil it for yourself. It's a nice little twist that may just blind side you at the very last moment.
~Pretty much a more fleshed out Super Star~
Kirby's Return to Dreamland has a ton to play around with in terms of copy abilities. Every single copy ability in Super Star except Yo-yo, Mirror, Wheel and Jet make their reappearance in this game. Not only that but they've all gotten major buffs as well. From new combos (which are done in a similar fashion to Kirby Super Star) to more invincibility frames (Hello Hammer!), the abilities are at their best in this game. Ninja especially feels buffed up with a new upper cut move and Blossom Storm.
But wait, there's more!
If you call now and order this game, it comes with 4 new copy abilities, FREE!!
That's right, Leaf, Water, Whip, and Spear have all been added to this game! While Whip feels kind of underwhelming, especially on bosses, the other three are a blast to play around with, especially with Water Kirby being long overdue. Leaf is also pretty much the new plasma, in terms of being over powered. Leaf's guard not only guards you from ALL damage but it's uppercut also does crazy amount of damage on bosses, even in EX mode!
Also new to this game are Ultra Abilities (Sword, Beam, Hammer, Ice and Fire). They all look amazing and flashy and feel satisfying to use, but their limited availability puts a bit of a damper on the idea.
Well, I guess let's move- WAIT! I forgot about the multiplayer!
Though if I'm honest, there isn't too much to say, other than you can have up to three people, and they can choose to be either Dedede (Hammer Ability), Metaknight (Combination of Sword and Wing), Bandana Dee (Spear), or a different coloured Kirby. It's a bit New Super Mario Bros.-esque but it's still a nice feature.
NOW let's move on!
~No big shortage of things to do~
Usually, in order to 100% a Kirby game all you really need to do to is finish the main story with all the collectibles and you're pretty much good to go.
As you may have guessed from the story section, the big collectible in Return to Dreamland is the energy spheres. There's 120 total spread through 7 worlds and as you gather more energy spheres, the Lor Starcutter opens up for you more and more, giving you more to come back for. While there is copy rooms, you can also unlock a couple of minigames (Scope shot, a third person shooting range type of deal, and Shuriken Throw, which is a little target practice where you simply go for the bullseye) and, more importantly, Challenge Rooms. There are a total of 8, and the better you do in a challenge room (the more enemies you hit, the more medals you collect etc.) the better your rank is. If you go through a room perfectly, you can even get a Platinum rank! Don't expect that to be easy though. You really need to have proper mastery of the copy Ability in question to do well. Thankfully, you only need to beat each challenge room once with any rank to get 100%. The Platinum ranks are really only there if you're feeling hardcore enough.
There's also an Arena you unlock once you beat the main mode. It's essentially a little boss rush you can do in your own time that's similar to any other Kirby Boss Rush.
Ala Nightmare in Dreamland, Return to Dreamland also has a hard mode once you beat the regular story mode. In this hard mode (EX Mode), you have half health, the stages include more Key Scarfies, and all minibosses and bosses have tougher attack patterns and take twice as much damage.
This is truly a test of skill, and if you manage to beat it, you brave soul you, you get the True Arena. The True Arena is essentially the same idea as the arena, but with two bonus bosses and the new and improved bosses.
If all of that somehow isn't enough to keep you occupied for a long time I don't know WHAT is.
~ American Kirby is... um... not that hardcore?~
I admit, I haven't played too many Kirby games out there besides the more simple platformers, but putting aside the EX mode Return to Dreamland really isn't very difficult. This game follows the typical Kirby trend of the bosses being hard and the stages being mind numbingly easy. Aside from a few bosses here and there, pretty much every death I had was me being stupid and jumping into pits because I forgot I could fly. Kirby is a fun series and all, but until you unlock EX mode, at most you might have a bit of trouble with some of the later Energy Spheres and bosses.
~EX-tras~
- No Mirror or Yoyo *silently cries*
+ Dat music
+ Nearly every ability is more fun than ever
+ The bosses are fun, if a bit predictable after a while
+ Wheel is merged with Needle
- Needle still sucks
+ Besides (arguably) Whip, everything new works very well
And with that, I bring this little adventure to a close. I'm overall happy I picked this game and it was worth all the hype I had going into it. I leave this game with a solid 8 and await the next journey into Dreamland eagerly.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
