At the time that this game came out, which was 2010, I had no idea it existed. I mean, technically I knew it existed but I had already lost my original DS at the time and had no way of playing it. I wouldn't play it on the DS till 2017, which was this year actually! But I had watched a video of it once I heard about it, so I was already familiar with it. I like Dementium II a lot better than the first game. It has a story focus this time even if it is the same learn bits and pieces as time goes on. The notes you find relate directly to the story and more cutscenes happen. It has it's problems, but not enough for me to lower my score. It's hardly a perfect game by any means, but it's a lot of fun.

Graphics: They improved the graphics a fair deal this time for the sequel. It has a better 3D engine. I say, as if I have a clue about this sort of thing, but things really do look improved. With better graphics, its already a better game than the original.
Sound: It has the same soundtrack of similar tunes, but atmospheric and eerie. Nothing to write home about by any means, but still a better soundtrack than the PC version. At least this one has music, not just atmosphere! Not that there is anything wrong with atmosphere.
Addictiveness: Same as the first game. Some people might play this game once, sell it, and never play it again. I am not one of these people. When I had it on the 3DS (technically it's still a DS game) I played through it 7 times! There are difficulty levels this time and there are a ton of self imposed challenges for you to see if you can beat the game as quickly as possible. This doesn't seem like a lot of fun, but this game has kept me busy that long, so if you are the kind to repeat your games every now and then, this might be for you!
Story: This game picks up directly (Sorta) where the previous game left off. Because of spoilers, I won't say anything further. Unlike the first game, this has a lot more story. You still pick up on most of it in notes, but you get story fed to you sometimes in cutscenes this time, so it's a bit better than the first game.
Depth: This is just as short as the first one! It can be beaten in an hour or so and is nothing more than a time waster. It might not keep you busy for a drive or trip. What it offers is great, but it leaves a sour taste in your mouth once you beat it. It's even more ambiguous an ending than the first game. This isn't a bad thing unless you don't like short games. It's criminally short and can be beaten in an entire sitting depending on difficulty and skill. If you know what you are doing and where to go (not that this game is a maze or anything. It's extremely linear) you can probably beat it in an hour.
Difficulty: This game has difficulty levels. You have your standard Easy, Normal, and Hard. Hard is pretty difficult as before you have a chance to know what's going on, they throw a boss battle at you and by this point you have a knife, a couple healing items, and fast movement drugs. I haven't managed to beat this boss on hard as you have to do some pretty gnarly resource management to not waste a lot of items. Keep in mind that you get a gun directly after the fight. (William even mentions that it could have come in handy sooner! He is not wrong!) While not the hardest (he says after directly admitting he couldn't do it) it is definitely a harder boss than usual and you barely have the tools to fight it.
Other than this boss, the game isn't that hard. Some enemies might give you trouble, but nothing is as annoying as the first game. The final boss can be a little tricky, but compared to the final boss of the first game. Assuming you pass that first boss, the game leaves you alone and I am sure it isn't quite as hard. I wouldn't know, but the game isn't that hard. It adds some minor platforming elements and that can be frustrating, but, again, nothing that proves exceedingly difficult or anything. Really the opening boss they throw at you is a gateway to the rest of the game. Nothing really proves too hard from there!

Dementium II is still not scary, but they improve the problems with the first game and add a bit more bang for your hour than the first game. It leaves a hollow feeling upon realizing the game ends just as ambiguous as the first one, but nothing too bad. It's still just as fun. This is apparently the last Dementium game before they remastered the games. PC gave us II on Steam. It isn't quite as good as this version, but I still enjoyed it. They remastered the first game on 3DS as I mentioned in that game's review.
If you have a DS, or 3DS I suggest you pick up a copy or emulate it if you can't be bothered. The emulated version doesn't save so you have to rely on Save States. It's a better experience that's just brought down by it's criminally short story and gameplay. Just when it seems to be really fun, you are almost done with it.
While I scored it a perfect 10, it's hardly perfect. I just have a better time with it, and have a lot more fun with this compared to it's predecessor. |
