The new version of the XBOX ONE is coming out in a few months, however, there's a debate brewing amongst the gaming community: why the heck is it being called the XBOX ONE X? 

To me, XBOX ONE X sounds way to similar to XBOX ONE S. The system's code name during development was Scorpio. To me, that sounds a lot better. Imagine being on the phone if you worked at a place like GameStop. X and S sound very similar, so you could get confused very quickly. 

I'm calling it the XBOX Scorpio. What are you calling it, and why? 

Really not bother to give that console a name. I don't care about 4k graphics when they don't have a system that don't work in the first place. Maybe the X stand for "get away" "big waste of money" I have a Xbox one, but only playing forza and halo on it. But we all know that microsoft is not very imaginable when it comes to name the console they are going to sell  

The name of the console doesn't really bother me unless it's an entirely new console. A great example is the Wii U. I will admit that it does sound similar to Xbox One S, which could potentially cause some issues. Other than that, I'm alright with it. It's just a name.

Lexatom : You know how the XBOX ONE got a mid cycle upgrade to the XBOX ONE S? Well, same thing with the Scorpio, but it's more powerful, and native 4k. That's pretty much what's going on. 

My problem is the name sounds too similar when you speak it out loud. And I understand keeping the " XBOX ONE " part of the title, sure. But, everybody liked Scorpio. And then they go and give some reason that's, albeit, a good one, to call it the XBOX ONE X, and quite a bit of people don't like it. I just want something different, you know? 

You hear Scorpion, and you go " OH CRAP, RUN! THAT THING WILL MESS YOU UP! IT'S POWERFUL! ". You hear " X ", and you go "Oh, it's one of the letters that people forget about it's existence. " 

It's dumb, not that I liked Scorpio too much, but they shouldn't give it such a similar name. I can imagine the problems it's going to cause with parents and their children with parents not knowing the difference between Xbox One,  Xbox One S and Xbox One X. Even though it's not at the level of stupidity The "New 3ds" was (imagine buying a used new 3ds).  About the only reason I could see for it is that they want to make clear that it is in fact still just an upgraded Xbox One and not an entirely new console.

Regardless I don't particularly mind though because I never cared much about Xbox One or 4k resolution to begin with. Xbox One at most has some games that are only available on it and PC and limited cross platform play which is cool I guess in comparison to the PS4 but nothing that would make me seriously consider buying it. I don't think the 4k resolution is noticeable enough to warrant buying an entirely new unit for it. I'd rather wait for the next console but that's just me.

Does it really matter?

You say what console you've got very rarely and you could easily just state "the new one"

It's called the xbox one x because its still essentially an xbox one... it is not a new generation of consoles... hence why the ps4 is called the ps4 pro and not the ps5 for example...

If you really can't get your head around it.. then meh... its not precisely a huge problem is it lol.

Zlinqx : That's what me and the guy at GameStop were discussing, was the confusion that having the S and X sounding so similiar would cause. Like you said, if a kid says he wants the X for Christmas, and his parents get him the S, then there might be a confusion. It just sounds too similiar. 

Sonicmcmuffin : it's not that big of a problem at all. It's just the confusion that X and S will cause because they sound similiar. And hence why I'm calling it Scorpio, to avoid the confusion. 

Honestly though X and S are not precisely similar sounding letters.... 

The naming makes sense. It's supposed to be another Xbox One, not a new Xbox in general.

I'm going to buy one. I've been really enjoying my Xbox One, and I hope to get a 4K television soon, so it would be a great match for it.

alexanyways : Same here. I mean, it does make sense, I supposed. It just sounds too similiar to me when you hear them in a sentence, so it's a little confusing for me. 

Even though I've been playing my PS4 a lot, and neglecting my XBOX, much to the enjoying of 
MattyIce : , I still plan on getting the XBOX ONE X, and a 4k TV for it. Maybe not right because of that $500 price tag. My sisters are coming to visit me, so all that video game money is going to go towards them. I'll probably get it after Christmas when there is some kind of sale. 

It should be neither.
Scorpio sounds like a project codename, and should remain that. It breaks the general flow of names and only stands to cause confusion for people. For example, my dad, when he found out that there was a Mario Kart game on the GameCube said "But isn't that a Nintendo game?" Sounds strange until you think of why it was confusing.

Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One.
Or even NES, SNES, N64... GameCube? Wii? Wii U? Switch? Up until the GameCube all Nintendo consoles had Nintendo in their common title, or at least an N in the abbreviation. GameCube changed all of that and resulted in confusion for people who had grown used to the custom.

Frankly I think numbers are the way to go, but with Xbox having named the third console "One" it would be a mess to do that now. So at least keep "One" in the upgraded One's title. Maybe One up or 1.5, or One Pro (because Pro controllers were around even before PS4 Pro, so it wouldn't really be a rip), and so on. But Scorpio would either confuse people about who made it, or confuse people about what kind of system it is. While One X is an awful name (no offense) it at least shows that it's a One.


That said, Xbox One X is wayyy too redundant. They had a long time to think of a name, and they settled on that? I'd even have gone for Xbox One XL over that. But yeah, why not 1.5? Idk. Either way, I think X and Scorpio are both bad choices. If I owned one though, I would have to choose one or the other, in which case I'd stick with Xbox One X for various reasons.

Eirinn : I think you might have misunderstood me when I said I was going to call it by it's project name, Scorpio. I'm calling it the XBOX ONE Scorpio, not the Scorpio or XBOX Scorpio. 
The ONE S is essentially the PS4 Slim, and then the XBOX ONE X is going to essentially be a more powerful version of the S, similiar to the PS4 Pro.

I still don't like either name, even with the One added in there. I prefer to stick with the proper name, lest I sound like a confused noob. lol That and I just don't care for either enough to worry with calling it by another title.


I can see why one might choose to call it Xbox One Scorpio, but I'll go with Xbox One X myself.

I'm going to call it the Xbox One X just because that's its name. Like you don't really here people calling the switch the NX anymore. Also, I like to call it what it is. I have high expectations for this console and even though I'm a PC nut I want to see this console outsell and outperform the Ps4 just because competition is really consumer friendly.

Well honestly it sounds better being called XBOX Scorpio as opposed to Xbox One X, either way I won't be buying the console tho, sadly there just isn't anything new feature wise that makes the console worth getting. In my opinion XBOX or rather microsoft has just been re-releasing the same console just with different color skins and memory, and in all honesty getting a new console with "better graphics" is pointless if the television your playing on doesn't match up or compete with the maximum graphic output of the console so it's a waste of money  not to mention the games for the XBOX have gotten stale to me over the past years because they are like the console, just re-releases of the same titles, or meaning less endless re-boots or continuations of games that are long past there prime and need to die. 

But as far as the title goes for a gaming console the name could easily confuse people buying the console for another person, mostly parents buying the console for there kids  

I'm actually calling it the Xbox One X-Box. Just to be extra confusing.

They deserve it for making such a terrible name. Or better yet, they deserve it for even releasing a console after the 360.

I'm not even going to put the XBox in front, I'm just calling it Scorpio. I hate the X part at the end, AND I was already expecting it for a while to be Scorpio, so regardless of what they call it, it's going to be Scorpio to me.

I'm pretty sure they could have come up with a bunch of other better names, heck just calling it the XBOX Two would have been better.
