This is interesting. The article writer there said they didn't think it would be a modern console, but it sounds like it is. I mean they've been making flashback consoles for years already, so why would they say anything like they did if it was the same thing they'd always been doing?
I'm actually really hopeful that this is a new and modern console. I mean, frankly I feel Nintendo needs to just be edged out the rest of the way. I doubt this will do it, but if it did it could be cool to have three major consoles.

Coleco Chameleon Act II. Calling it now.

If a crowdfunding campaign comes up for this thing, I'm gonna call it a scam. I can't fathom why they'd make a new console, unless they really do mean something NESClassic-esque, which is essentially a glorified plug & play.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm super interested. I'm just skeptical, something feels off about this totally random reveal.

Looks like it's going to be a refurbished 2600. At least it will inherit the wooden structure, but now refined to make it look classy, and probably update a few things so it fits better in the current market.

A new console to compete with the actual ones doesn't seem a possibility. I honestly don't see Atari fighting for a share in the market right now, but given how they're an institution when it comes to retro gaming it's just natural for them to release a classic console.

Time will say, though. The only thing for sure is that Atari's return will be much anticipated, which means it can potentially go very wrong if not handled well. Jaguar, anyone?

I'm not sure what this is going to be, but I can tell you that's it's not going to be anything that is going to last. Sony and Microsoft seemingly are trying to move away from hardware, so I really don't see this being anything other than a fleeting niche console for Atari fans.

No way will this ever compete in the open market with the other 3 majors.

It could be interesting, but I'm already skeptical since the CEO came out and said it's going to run off a PC platform. Which basically leads me to believe it's not going to be anything more than an emulator box.

If this is a classic console I can't see it succeeding. Sure, when Nintendo re-released the NES those games are still fun to play for most people but the Atari games were barely playable when they were released so I can't imagine this being a good thing.

I would prefer to see a more modern console than a retro one at this point.

Wow look nothing!

I wonder how this will turn out. Wouldn't it be hilarious if they freaking blow everybody else out of the water in terms of power? Or at least...Have games?

That is just wishful thinking anyway. It may just be some kind of plug and play console.

Jordanv78 : Is being the CEO of Atari sorta like being president of a micronation you made in your backyard?...At least it was until now.

There's absolutely no way they're going to keep up with Sony and Microsoft in the hardware market and they can't float by with a loyal fan base and exclusive IP like Nintendo does. This is either going to be a scam or something like Steam Machine. I just don't see it working.

However, if it DOES work, this could set an interesting precedent. If this succeeds, could we see other companies venturing back into hardware market? Could we finally see the Dreamcast II 20 to 25 years after the fact?

Just got wind of some news that it's supposedly not a plug&play, not an emulation box, it's an official home console that will most likely be designed to compete with modern consoles.

Atari has no notable IPs, has never been known to make good consoles, and I essentially think this will just go downhill.

Why make your own console if you aren't going to have exclusives, and why have exclusives if they aren't notable IPs? What are we gonna get, 4 dimensional Tempest? Crystal Castles Gaiden? I can't imagine what they could give us. They can't even give us space invaders because that's a Taito IP.

All the best arcade games aren't atari, so, what are we gonna get? A box of wood that does basically nothing?

EDIT: I also meant to summon Eirinn and say the following: I really don't think that Atari, the company that crashed the gaming industry, is going to be able to edge Nintendo, the company that saved the gaming industry, out of the competition. No way that can be possible.

I don't really feel like Atari will be able to compete with the likes of Nintendo, but it'll be interesting to see if this is in fact a new generation console.

I love the wood panels on the system. I'm excited to see any new information that might be coming out soon.

Who even knows what it'll be.

yoshirulez! : Oh no, I don't think it stands a chance at succeeding, I'm just saying that, in all honesty, I think we'd be better off if someone did replace Nintendo. Be it Atari, Sega, or my uncle Bob that doesn't even exist. lol I just have a really bad taste in my mouth with Nintendo's attitude and business methods over the past few years and think it would be great to see them gone or pushed into getting their heads in the game and being honorable about their business.

But I agree: who buys an all third party console? You can get third party on PlayStation or Xbox, plus their exclusives. This will fail unless they have secret deals with devs for exclusive IPs. And I don't see Atari doing that.

One critique though: Atari didn't even get close to killing the industry. The gaming crash wasn't worldwide, it was, if I recall correctly, exclusive to the U.S. And that wasn't due to Atari, it was due to all of the different consoles flooding the market. At one point there were probably ten console companies, and that's just plain oversaturation. Which is another reason why this thing needs to knock Nintendo out or die. Four major console companies is too much imo.

Aside from that, I agree with everything you said.

Eirinn : I don't know, I think four might be too few. Part of the problem with the videogame industry right now is a lack of competition. The fact that Nintendo can float by on their IP and that Microsoft and Sony think they're competing, but really both have their core crowds, I think, is hindering innovation. I don't feel like any of the mentioned parties are really aiming very high with all their stuff for the simple fact that it's not necessary at this point in time to do so to stay relevant. They're just milking people for everything they have.

m0ssb3rg935 : I don't really get that though. I mean we've seen them pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into new systems, VR, new system capabilities, and innovative games pushing all previously defined boundaries. Maybe it's just rose colored glasses, but it seems to me that the only one not trying to push boundaries is Nintendo, though admittedly Xbox is only pushing hardware boundaries, but that's something anyway.

And the core gamers may stay faithful to their console of choice, but there is indeed a big group of people that are willing to switch between PlayStation and Xbox, as was evidenced by the increase of Xbox gamers last generation and decrease of PlayStation gamers when PlayStation misstepped with the PS3, resulting in a very tight race between the two, and the exact opposite when Xbox misstepped with Xbox One. Statistics actually showed that 33% of early adopters for PS4 never owned a PS3. So while the core groups will remain loyal bar some huge event, there is definitely a real battle between the two for the others. Plus the battle for new gamers as well.

However, I still remain skeptical about Atari being the one to make a difference worth noting. I think we need someone involved in the software business to make a new console, but not really Atari...

I doubt this will compete with Sony and Microsoft, Atari just doesn't have the financial backing to market and manufacture a full scale console effectively. It would just be crushed.

However, I do feel that it would be a great emulation platform, and honestly I'm a fan of the consoles design.

I'm hoping I'm wrong though, if some magical miracle happened and Atari actually came out with a legitimate competitor to the big 3. That would be very cool indeed.

This entire thing looks a bit suspicious to me. Atari doesn't link to the site anywhere and in fact if you go to the ataribox youtube channel you'll see that it left a comment on a movie trailer for bladerunner 2049 stating "can't wait to see this". That doesn't seem very likely to be the actions of what's supposed to be an official channel made by Atari. The whole strategy of keeping this so secret really doesn't make any sense either as Atari doesn't have the name recognizability it once did, they would need to get the name out there. It all seems a bit too similar to the hoax a while back when a site launched teasing the Dreamcast's successor.

So yesterday marked 40 years of the Atari. And I don't see anything yet. But once more. I be patient with the new console. Could be like Steam box, Maybe not. But who knows. We don't. Just keep patient.

That's actually really cool. I never really noticed that Atari was still around or at least coming back for this one release. I can't see it actually competing, but to those who really enjoyed the Atari of old could really chip in and take a look at this. I am curious on what it will look like.

Whether or not it is able to compete with Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft, I'm interested to see what direction this takes and what the final product will look like.

It's entirely possible that this will go downhill as soon as it releases, but I'm still interested in seeing what this console will offer, if anything.  I don't really see it succeeding in anything, Atari games were never really enjoyable for me, so I doubt that this will do anything to remedy that.
