Mega Man X was a new installment to the iconic Mega Man franchise. Mega Man X also known as X1 was a huge hit for Capcom. The X franchise established the mega man franchise to a new level. So it should be no surprise that a lot of hacks are out there of X1. Mega Man X generation is a hack of the original game. I will be comparing this hack to the original as well as other Mega Man X hacks.

Story: 9

The Story of this hack is left unchanged from the original. Dr. Cain discovers X he reads Dr. Light's notes on X. Cain decides to make reploids to help the humans using X as a template. Just in case anything goes wrong the Maverick Hunter unit is created. This unit goes after reploids who have turn bad becoming mavericks. Sigma is created and is the commander of the Hunters. Meanwhile Zero is discovered. Zero is a maverick him and Sigma fight with Zero getting the upper hand. Sigma did manage to knock Zero out. The virus that was in Zero left Zero and went into Sigma. Sigma becomes a Maverick assumes leadership of the mavericks and launches an attack on the world. Zero assumes the role of Commander. X feeling like this is partially his fault heads out with Zero to take down the mavericks. X wonders is this his destiny, or is this Dr. Lights plan for him among other questions.

Okay I was glad they did not change the plot. X1 had a very good plot and did a good job of introducing the characters as well as going into their backgrounds. I think the plot did a good job of introducing X, Zero, and Sigma. So, I do not feel like the rating needs to be changed. I give it a solid 9 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 5

What can I say but what happened here? The game had some potential in graphics but got messed up along the way. I liked the stage layouts. Some of the colors were actually nicely done and well designed. I even like the sprites of the game. So what was so bad about the graphics. Well for starters this game lags a lot but even that was not the biggest problem. The main issue is sometimes the graphics just freeze up on you. When this happens you cannot do a thing except reset the game. At first I thought it was the emulator. So I tried the game each time with a different emulator. One I got decent into the game and it just froze. So then I thought maybe its my browser. Tried the game in a different browser. Same result. Also the game reminds me of Mega Man 1 from the original series and that it feels like at times they are glitches as well as the game feels like its buggy.

The controls are not that great compared to the original X game or even some of the other Mega Man X hacks.  Mega Man X was infamous for having very smooth controls so what happened here. It makes me wonder if the maker of this game had software issues when creating this or was he or she using older software. The controls feel sluggish a lot in this game.

I give the graphics and controls a 5 out of 10. I'm actually being generous because of the colors, sprites and level designs. But the graphics just seem to have several issues compared to other hacks. The Proto Man hack of X1 had very good controls. The Zero hack of this game had good controls as well as the original game had good controls. So yeah, nothing real special here.

Sound: 7

The sounds of this game have been changed. Mega Man X Generation uses old soundtracks. I recognized some of the tunes from Mega Man & Bass, Mega Man 8 and some of the Dr. Wily stages. For the most part I felt like that was okay and was offering something different. The problem why oh why did they make tingling in the sound though. Mega Man is also known for its music and amazing sounds. Mega Man & Bass was an SNES game too so why were they tingles when using those tunes in this game. Mega Man & Bass did not have tingles in it neither did the original X game. Even other hacks of X1 did not have tingles. So that brings the rating down quite a bit. The buster sound and enemy shots were mostly left unchanged.  I give the sound a 7 out of 10. The tunes are okay and fit the stages pretty well I just hate that at times they had tingles in them.

Replay Value: 4

This game does not have as high of a replay value as other X1 hacks. It also does not have high replay value compared to the original. I had fun playing this game when it would work. But often times I found myself getting frustrated due to the controls, bugs, glitches, and the game just freezing up on me. Those issues took the joy out of playing this game. I gave the replay value a 4 out of 10. If somebody could re-do this game and clean it up it would probably be a good game. It looks like it could be a fun game to play once the issues were cleaned up. Until the issues get cleaned up though I probably will play other X1 hacks.

Depth: 8

Like most Mega Man games and X games the game continues the tradition of having depth to it. I really like how the maker or makers did not change the depth. They are lots of secrets in the stages, lots of items to find, and power ups to collect too. Also the stages are typical for Mega Man games long in length. Assuming the game does not freeze up on you this game will take a while to complete.

Difficulty: 8

X Generation is difficulty but for the wrong reasons. I like games that are genuine difficult requiring skill, reflexes, creativity, and luck to beat. Those games are enjoyable. I have just described the typical difficulty of Mega Man games. This game is not difficulty because of that nope not at all.

The game is difficulty due to the bugs, glitches, graphics and controls. Enemies sometimes re-spawn as soon as you kill them. In one stage one enemy even comes up right behind you. The enemies when they do that, appear glitchy making me think its more of a bug and glitch. Also you can jump on a platform even though you land on it due to the glitches you fall right through into a pit or on death spikes. Then you have the game freezing up on you. I had that happen so many times were I would have to restart the game. That is not how a game should be. The lags can be a problem too as they can cause you to miss a jump or miss judge a jump.

So while I gave the game a difficulty rating of 8 out of 10. The difficulty does not feel right. The game is difficult due to the issues. Mega Man X1, X1 Proto Man version and X1 Zero Version had difficult moments in them. Those games were difficult due to bosses, enemy placement, spikes and pits. That is how a game is supposed to be in difficulty. The difficult reminds me so much of Mega Man 1. The very first Mega Man game was difficult due to the glitches and bugs.

Overall rating: 5.6

Mega Man X generation had a lot of issues in it. However, the game did have a few positive things in it. I wills start with the positives first.

I really liked the stage layout in this game as I mentioned the levels were neatly designed. The colors fit the stages very well. It was like the maker was trying to do something new here and make one feel like they were playing a different game. I did not even mind the soundtrack being changed since it used older tunes from other mega Man games. I also like how the depth was left unchanged.

The problem was the bugs, and glitches overshadowed the good in the game. I really do not know what happened as I stated maybe the maker was using older software. The glitches, can just make this game feel sloppy at times. I also do not like the controls. The controls are not up to par with most X or Mega Man games. I was shocked on how sloppy the controls were in this game.

I also do not like how the game is difficult for the wrong reasons. The glitches, bugs, and controls make this game seem like it is cheating in terms of difficulty. Also due to these issues this game does not seem like one you would want to replay again and again like other hacks.

My final fought is this. This game has potential and could be really good if the issues were fixed. If this game did not have so many issues. Then my rating would be really good probably at least an 8.3 at the worst. I hope somebody or the maker can redo this game and clean it up. I would like to see how good this game is without the issues. It feels like it has a lot going for it with the stages being changed, backgrounds being changed, and colors remade. But right now I think this game has way too many issues to enjoy playing again and again. So the question is would I recommend this game? Right now the answer is no. I hate to say that but this game has just got too many issues right now. This game will just cause you to get frustrated due to the game freezing up on you, the glitches, bugs, lags, bad controls and other things I have mentioned. Hopefully, somebody will clean these issues up and make this game shine. This game could be really good if it was not for these issues the potential is there. I give the game a 5.6 rating. The game had a few good parts to it they are just overshadowed. The game has just got too many things wrong with it for me to give a higher rating.
