Hey guys I'm back with another review. It's been awhile but this one is worth it! I got this game more out of wanting something new as I had gotten bored with what I had at the time, but wow what a gem I found. Without farther adieu, let's a go!
Graphics: 10 This area was really well done. I was a skeptical at first, but the landscapes were well rendered. All of the characters looked good and just the feel of your surroundings, whether you are in the subways and underground shops, or top side in Akihabara or the back alleys of the home town, this game really accentuates the feel of a normal life in modern Japan. Even the dungeons are well made. Without spoilers, each one fits the enemy boss perfectly. The cut scenes were gorgeous and I will never forget the opening scenes with your main character leaping out of a freaking window! That was NICE! So cocky Mr. Joker! Sound: 10 Another really well done aspect is the sound. At first it took some getting used to, as it was not my normal area, but I soon found it catchy and actually ended up downloading it on my phone for on the go. The poppy jazz feel of the game suites the life of a phantom thief perfectly, whether you are in hiding, be it at home or behind your mask as you fight, or in the thick of a tough battle, the music draws you in, in ways that I found quite amazing. Several of the songs have lyrics that fit the scene as well, but the lyrics only start appearing around halfway through the game in some cases. Before that you hear the same sound, but only the backtrack. If you are replaying it though, you can still sing along. Addictiveness: 9 While I got hooked immediately and it was all I could talk about for a while, I find the replay a little lack luster. Mostly when you play new game plus. They add a few new things, but when you can pull a level 40 or 80 out in the early game being you keep a lot of things from the prior run-through, it makes things too easy. I don't even have to use a skill, I can simply swing my sword and down most enemies despite my low level. That defeats the purpose. The only reason I still rate this high is because in terms of a basic full re run with a brand new character, there is always something different you can do. Different people to befriend and many different allies to gain. Story: 10 Ok, so trying to say anything here without spoilers may be difficult so there are some minor points I will state that hopefully won't be a problem. I am warning you now. So, the story revolves around you, the character, a male teen in high school, who gets charged with assault and is forced to move to a new town. The main character stays with a family friend while you are there for a year. It soon becomes apparent that odd things have been happening and that you are about to get thrown into the thick of it. You meet new friends that end up joining you in the quest against corrupt and dirty adults. You stop them in the only way possible, by going into their minds! Step into their world as they see things, find what started their odd obsessions, and steal it! That is the basic goal through out the game. I find the point fascinating to say the least. Depth: 10 This is where things get big. The story was great, but in terms of overall details, wow. Let's see, you can go the Pokémon route and try to collect all the creatures and fill in the compendium (cough cough pokedex). You can try to find all the people that can aid you on your journey and befriend them to the max level. You can max out your stats and try to get a perfect score on your exams. Oh and just answer the questions asked in class. So many things to try and do. Heck you can even try and get all the endings, most of them bad just to see what they are. Now I realize that some of this is only possible if you do a new game plus, including a few secrets which I will not spoil. That being said there is some merit to playing a new game plus if you can resist the urge to call your perfect persona from the previous play through in dungeon one. Difficulty: 10 The only reason I put it this way is while you can play the game on the easiest level possible, which is for beginners, you can actually download an extra hard mode. I will admit I can't even handle normal and I am relatively good at the element based match up stuff that this game accentuates. I love the style that allows for a one turn victory. Problem comes around during boss fights or red enemies. Red enemies are still relatively easy if you can beat them quickly, but let the fight drag on and you could be in major trouble especially when you try to beat the dungeon in one go, which is not recommended, though it is possible if you play your cards right. The boss fights can deal massive damage quickly and the issue with that, is when they target the Main Character, single him out for destruction. Now it may have just been the equipment I had, but to me he seems like a glass cannon, aka a high attacker, but can't take a hit. If he is targeted repeatedly he can't keep up and will fall. Problem is, it's an instant game over if he does, even if the rest of the team is still standing. That is a nuisance to say the least, but if you work at things and learn the enemies weaknesses and avoid their strengths and repels you might still have a chance. Overall: 9.8 Finally at the end, but the entire package as a whole, despite the couple of gripe points is well worth the buy. The games selling point for me came in the heavy use of psychology through out the game. I guess I should have expected that from the title, but I came into this franchise with no prior knowledge of persona and only a minimal knowledge from the main series it branched from Shin Megami Tensei. The entire games focuses on psychology, both cognitive and personality. It was amazing to see and read. I hope others will enjoy this game as well, whether for the in depth points of the world it brings up or even just as a relaxing, let's punch something game. The focus on stealth and sneaking was made fairly easy with an easy always hidden way to ambush enemies. So even for someone like me that has no patience and is terrible at stealth missions in any other game, this was super easy in that regard. Thanks Atlus for giving us this amazing game! Good luck to all who go for this game as well and as always thanks for reading! See you next time!
