For my most recent video uploading (last week), I was stripped down of its collaboration points because they were (rightfully) deemed distorted, i.e. flattened.

It seems to have been a recurrent problem since I joined the website. My Genesis videos (for the Shining Forces) and PSX have all unnatural length versus their width. It never happened for the NES, SNES, Game Boy and Game Gear.

Is it a browser problem? I use Chrome. I edit the videos with Freemake, but there doesn't seem to be much I can do to correct the distortion... unless there is a function I'm unaware of?

Is handbrake a good program? Freemake constantly wants me to install a new program (with no opting out options) that drives my antivirus nuts.

It depends what program you are using for this type of activity. Windows users (10 only actually) have the Windows + G key that makes it so that you can record gameplay with the simple push of a button and no downloads at all. 

And for video editing, I'm not sure. You could probably try Windows Movie Maker but that's just the basic stuff. Another option you could try is the YouTube video editor, although be advised, that may be to basic also depending on how much editing you need.
