AuroVee :

I'm aware.

I'm just saying I don't have the time to do anything beyond that (like finding out if janus was staff when he won a yellow jersey in 2015 or whatever). It's a fun project. Not for me though. Everyone has easy access to the basic answers of "who" won, but it takes some work to dig up if that user was staff at the time of the event.

Like I was staff when I won the third TDV. But it doesn't show that on the page, because right now I'm only an elite.

legacyme3 : I see. As for the other two, then obviously we'd need to check the threads of every Tour done in the past.

Anyways, that's six blues in a row I got now. Let's see if I can't get a whole week of Blues and possibly win in a sense by having the most Blue Jersey wins this time.

Well, for some days there were hopes that Cox could battle against Yuna for Green, but now it seems a bit too late. If Yuna places second everyday without Cox getting a couple or more seven pointers it will be enough for her to clinch the jersey.

I'm surprised to hear that Yuna indeed was the quickest to 300 considering the total points achieved in other editions. Maybe it's because the other competitors let the competition die and allowed the leader to get even more points nearing the end, and that's why Yuna doesn't have high chances of beating the point record despite how fast she's getting points.

One last weekend before we enter the very last week of the competition. Seeing how everything is going, only Red can have some battle because the rest would need a debacle from the leader, except in Blue where Yuna nearly doubles the points of second place holder. Still, we could see quite decent daily results like yesterday in Yellow where you could almost be out of the top 5 with 1500 words, so this competition is far from over.

Well, I know that I won't be able to be on for the last three or so days of the TdV due to real life events, but I'm going to see how many points I can get before then. As long as I stay in the top 5 or so in Blue and/or overall, then I'll be content.

Also... I think Yuna has clearly won this unless they get DQed at the last minute.

Yeah, it seems like it. What'll happen if there are no new users from the last 90 days who gain a point by the end of the TdV? Who's going to get the White Banner then?
Although now, I'm encroaching on the Top 3... Even though I likely won't make it and stay due to having to stop posting in just over four days time.

Yesterday's results were dismal at best for me. I had my nephews over, but that hasn't held me back the past two weekends, so it isn't much of an excuse this week either. Oh well, all I can do is try harder from here on out.

Wow, to think that yesterday's Yellow winner wouldn't even make it to top 5 for the day before... And just when we all started to think the results would only go higher, just the top 2 for Red and Green showed really good results. Kind of a bummer, but let's hope it's just for this one day.

Looks like I sneaked in the top 10. No surprise if we consider I've been scoring for nearly a week now, but it's indeed a surprise given how I've slowed down because of my cold and what not. Doesn't look like I can surpass my best result of 8th overall, but who knows what can the next days hold.

Yuna1000 :

I think the problem goes back to what I was saying earlier, and it requires some deep analysis about what exactly is going right and wrong.

As it stands, the TDV is only attracting a very specific subset of users, and this is primarily users who happen to be staff. If you look at the top 5 for any TDV, it is almost always comprised of staff entirely.

I might be a bit biased, but one particular TDV stands out as one that should be studied, the third TDV, done in the Summer of 2012.

I linked the final results, because I want you to look at a few things:

In the top 5, there were three or four staff members (myself, DarkPower508, and David for sure, cnw64 may have been staff at that point but I forget), and one non-staff member. But right behind the top 5 was a new user (SamB), and a few relatively minor members. In the "new user" category, there were at least 10 placers (who all had at least 7 points).

To me this proves a few points:

1. That you can have an active TDV, even if the staff is dominating the top of the competition.
2. That you can have a regular user compete with the staff (Seishiro Leonhart gave me a run for my money, even though I was incredibly active that month).
3. That new users can be active too.

The biggest difference, in my opinion, between the current TDV, and the older ones, is the implementation of the CP system in the TDV. It's a source of much controversy. Since the inception of the rule changes, there have been way more complaints about the event being fixed for staff (previously, the red jersey was simply for most words in a single post, and the green jersey was for most posts in an isolated hour, so the TDV was just about posting), and new users have less avenues to compete (newbies can only do a FRACTION of what other members can do).

Anyone who has been here for less than 3 months is likely to be either a "newbie" or a "normal" member. While actions exist for them, it pales in comparison to what even an elite like me can do. For example, a member can do 10 ratings for screenshots, and I can do 20. And screenshot rating is so easy and quick to do (you can reasonably do that in 10-20 minutes, when you factor in the "you must wait before you get credit" rule) in comparison to the things that a newbie has to do in order to make up the gap in CP.

I don't have answers for how you can make the TDV better. But I think that it starts at changing how the CP jerseys work, either by changing them back to how they used to be, limiting just how much anyone can do in a given day, beyond trusted members, or giving a bonus to new users participating. There are a couple different ways to approach it, but it's not a shock to me that new users aren't participating.

After all, they have no chance in hell of making damage, like they did in years past. I might be wrong, but the last time a "new" member was in the top 10 in a TDV (which are almost never competitive anymore, by the way), was the 2014 Spring TDV, when zurenriri finished 10th, barely. Before that, new users were very frequent in the top 5.

So in my opinion, it would be wise to take good, long, hard looks at every TDV. Study what went wrong in every TDV after the 2014 Spring TDV (since no newbies place in the top 10), and what went right before then (since newbies users were not just doing well, but some even won or finished in the top 3). Get common threads to determine what the issue is, and fix the issue. Then you'll have the newbie users participating again, hopefully.

But that's just how I view it. I don't have the time to actually do an in-depth analysis.

It's a source of much controversy. ...The heck? How...?

I just had a look at the results for yesterday, and... There was a tie for 1st place on the Blue, with me and Yuna having exactly 16 posts each. But, I know I reached the 16 posts first, and I had more words in them in total. So why did it award the Jersey to Yuna and only give me four points, when there was a clear tie and I had the advantage in those two regards?!?

Yuna1000 : Damnit, you broke my streak...

legacyme3 : While you provide a good point, I personally think that the TdV nowadays is more a gradual change rather than immediate challenge between newbies and "veterans". You start by competing for the White Banner, then three months later you're fighting with everyone else. We have an example with SWTerra, who won White in Autumn 2015 and then went on to finish in the top 10 in Winter 2016 when fighting with everyone else. If he could have continued being active, he could have made it to the top 5 for sure and progress to become a potential winner.

I would also like to object to your position about the CP being implemented in the TdV. In Spring 2015, Yunimori won White while holding 9th overall and up to 10 users placed for White, even though only 4 of them got 5 or more points. You surely remember how Ferdinand dropped our jaws to the floor by nearly winning playing in just Red and Green in that edition, yet we got such an active White Banner and a top 10 finish for its winner.

How did all those newbies score? Yellow and Blue, mostly. In a competition like the one we're having this month, it wouldn't be hard for a newbie to score points. Both Yellow and Blue provide good chances to score for anyone who tries and it's not that hard to pull out some points from Red, so why aren't newbies placing this month?

As sad as it may be, newbies aren't around. I don't think it has anything to do with the TdV, the problem lies deeper than that and as such changing the TdV wouldn't do much. We need to find ways for new users to become active before the 90 days limit expires, and once that is achieved and we can see a top 10 for White again we can talk about changing the TdV so newbies can fight for Rainbow as well.

AuroVee :
For Blue, the determining tie-breaker is whoever has the higher total post count. Since Yuna has made more posts on the Board in general, she was awarded the jersey, even though you made it to 16 posts first.

I'm not sure if it was ever changed (since ties are much less common in the other jerseys), but in the past the tie-breaker for all 4 jerseys was whoever had the highest total post count.

Mynamescox44 :

...That's just an outrage, in my opinion. I can get why that might be made, but it basically the same as 'higher ups get priority on ties' - which I think is a bit broken. I would like to contest the tie being awarded in Yuna's favour - even if I don't get the Jersey, I should at least share the 5 points. Because I kinda need every point I can get.

AuroVee : It doesn't need to be priority for the higher ups. It's not like Yuna has that many total posts, she can lose a tie-breaker in Blue against several users both staff and non-staff (not even needing to be previous staff). In fact, there are a total of 150 users who would have won the tie-breaker against her, so it's kind of a decent amount.

I must admit that the tie-breaker for any jersey being decided on who made it first would also be fair. The current tie-breaker plays against timezones as well for those of us that can't be online during the last hours of the day to riposte, so it's something we should definitely consider.

Yeah. Well, that's something to consider for future TdV events.

Still, a seven day streak isn't that bad, come to think of it.

Still a quiet race, at least for blue and yellow... Has it always been like that for April (because of school) or, as someone once told me, the website has had less affluence?
