Hello all!

I was wondering if anyone has given the Fire Emblem: Heroes mobile game a try. I think it's fairly new, but honestly I'm not the most current when it comes to these things, so I apologize if it's old news.

I've never actually played a Fire Emblem game, and the most exposure I had was in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and the Wii U/3DS Super Smash Bros. But I really liked Lucina and Marth's character designs, and the music in Fire Emblem: Birthright ("Youuuu are the ocean's grey waaavvees..."  ), so I thought I'd give the mobile a try.

I was pretty pleasantly surprised! The art is great, the soundtrack isn't campy and cheap like a lot of apps, there's occasional voice acting that isn't incredibly amazing but doesn't grate on your ears either, and the gameplay is interesting and engaging. I'm not very good at tactical games, but it definitely made me want to get one of the console Fire Emblem games. The plot is kind of simplistic and contrived, but does a rather good job of getting multiple Fire Emblem characters in one place at one time. My only real complaint about the game is that to unlock heroes from your team, you must spend "orbs" in a "summon," which is completely randomized. If anyone has played Tsum Tsum, it's a pretty similar process to unlocking new Tsums. Well, that and the fact that it has to update every time I open the app, which doesn't take long but worries me, since it requires a lot of free space, I always flirt with danger in terms of free space on my phone...

So, I was curious about others' reactions to this game. Did it live up to your expectations?

It's so weird, I just got this a few days ago and then this pops up.

I hate that you need internet to play it but I'm giving it a shot.

I do like the art, though other than that I'm lost about what Fire Emblem is about in general. Rarely play the games.

I've played this since day 1 and I'm loving it so far. Its a lot better than I expected it to be. The orb system is similar to other games, like Final Fantasy Record Keeper. If you want to you can delete the app and redownload it to try to get characters that you want.
The music is taken straight out of previous Fire Emblem games.
The plot isn't amazing, but its what you'd expect out of a mobile game.

zanderlex : That's what drew me to it too; the art is just gorgeous. I didn't know you needed Internet to play it, though; that's a shame! I like mobile games because I can use them in "down time" on commutes or at school, so requiring Internet kind of hampers that. Still, I like it enough...

earthwarrior : No wonder the music is so good! Honestly, one of my favorite things about games is the soundtrack, so I'm really happy about FE:H's. Thanks for the tip, too, but it'd take a lot of redownloading for me to get the only two I care about (Marth and Lucina).

zanderlex : Ha ha, I meant in break. This term I had a four hour break between two classes, so it was nice to do something a little relaxing then. You know me; I'm always serious about school. At my school we could get failed for the day if phones are out during class, and we have to step out and take the call or text outside if it's urgent, so I'd really rather not risk it.

Apparently, though, many female gamers also prefer mobile? I think I read a study about it that said they found many women have similar opinions as I do; just a way to pass some downtime. It makes me wonder about the demographics of Fire Emblem: Heroes; I wonder if some girls are trying out a Fire Emblem game for the first time! (Though, not to be sexist, I wonder how many people in general are also new to the franchise through this game? If they market this right, it could really help sales for the next main game)

Fire Emblem is one of my favorite franchises, so even though I have all of 0 apps on my phone I still had to give this a shot. From the beginning I questioned what the quality would be like, but a free Fire Emblem--Why not?

I'm pretty impressed with it overall. Lucina's one of my favorites now as well (since she was so amazing in Awakening and her amiibo has helped me beat a few games since lol), but I've yet to get her. A friend of mine got a 5-star Lucina, though. I have Robin and a 4-star Pegasus Knight from one of the GBA games.

The way they chose to balance the attacks is pretty interesting. Usually Magic/Daggers get 1-2 range, not just 2. I haven't gotten very far at all, just been playing it when I have to stay late for work (during a time when there's literally nothing to do but wait), but I'm surprised by how much they packed into this game. I think it was a nice choice to leave out the permadeath mechanic. That way you're not necessarily forced to get that many characters. Makes it more stress-free, and that's what mobile games (supposedly any game) are about, right?

Anyway, if you are interested in playing games from the series, I personally started out on the GBA on this website. You can't play them directly on here anymore, but you can still download the ROM and play them on here with the workaround David implemented. If you enjoy FE Heroes I imagine you'd love the extra depth the full games bring to it. The stories are usually pretty well done and you actually care about your characters.

I've considered giving this game a try, especially if it's free. I wasn't really impressed with what I saw in the Nintendo direct, but for all I know, they just didn't cover the gameplay all that well. It just seemed like the maps were so tiny... Not sure If I'll be able to play it, though. If there's an iOS version, I likely won't be able to install it because I have an iPhone 4 that can only update to iOS 7.1.2 and most everything in the app store requires 8.0 and up.
