Suicide is.... quite sad. The act of taking one's life comes with many consequences.  It negatively affects all of your loved ones, sending many of them into a spiraling depression from which it takes time to recover.  It also opens up many pretentious viewpoints such as thinking suicidal people are "psychotic", are doing it for attention, and so on. It's quite a topic. What's your opinion?

I wonder if anyone will get all Vizzy and say we've done this before and demand this thread get closed. I've seen it happen on a number of occasions.

Suicide, to me, is the coward's way out of things. Bravery, courage, the hard part is facing life, finding help, executing (excuse the joke) a positive change, and then using your experiences to impact others in a beneficial way.

What better way to help anyone else than to be able to say, "I thought about suicide because of what you are going through. So you know, there is a bright spot and a better life if you focus on so-and-so."

The point of life is to treat yourself and others with compassion. How compassionate is it to just kill yourself because things are hard? There are some terrible things, living in Berlin during the Russian occupation, or draining money and resources for a disease or condition that will never heal, or being subject to terrible tortures and violence, where it is acceptable. But that suicide is a means of resistance, not failure. Killing yourself because people made fun of you on Facebook or Instagram is being a coward. You get laughed at during school? Killing yourself doesn't solve anything and it only strengthens the resolve of those making fun of you. They realize they can control others' actions and they get more power. And someone else who's going through the same thing sees your example, and they think, "Yes, suicide IS the answer since so-and-so just showed me."

Be an example, lead from the front, show power and bravery, take control of your life and help those around you. Those are things we should all strive for. Suicide, in many modern day cases, doesn't mean power. It means cowardice, it is the easy way out, and it means quitting on ourselves and those around us.

Good points,Ghostbear. Now,I might be opening a can of worms here,I have attempted suicide when I was younger. I just was sick of the BS and wanted out. I think suicide is acceptable in certain situations. If you were in a horrific accident and now you cannot do the simplest things for yourself for example. Not because you were cyber bullied. You will get over it and you can survive it. And truthfully I consider 'cyber-bullying' lightweight bullying in a way. Now,yes, people have had their lives wrecked online and the reputations shot, but I think actual bullying is far worse. You are face to face with your tormentor, not staring at a screen. Bullying does not last forever, and you will get over it. Killing yourself over a boy or girl is also mega stupid. There are 7 billion people out there,I am sure you can find someone else.

I will just throw out the cliche  that I agree with: "Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem." Ghostbear sums it up very nicely

Personally, I just don't understand suicidal people. I mean, I can say this or that about it, but I don't really know if I'm qualified to answer if I haven't experienced it myself. I think you'd have to be, for lack of a better expression, a little on the loose side to want to kill yourself. It just seems like a very emotional and impulsive thing to do. Have I ever wondered if it would make a difference if I died? Yes, but I've never thought about killing myself. I don't think it's a rational thought.

Suicide is a very complex issue.

Often times people who commit suicide feel like there is no hope left and their problems will be solved. People who are in financial ruin who commit suicide, feel like they have no hope left, their situation will  not change, and they feel lost. It can also be a sign of desperation. In that case a person feels like killing themselves will solve all of their problems. This can be seen in teens who have committed suicide due to cyber bullying or feeling lost.

As I hinted at Suicide can be a desperation attempt. For example there are stories of Jews in Germany who were about to be burned alive committing suicide rather than be burned alive. Women who are sex slaves have been known to commit suicide rather than be violent raped. Also prisoners have also been know to do it rather then be executed. In this case its desperation. Its easy for us to say well they are wrong. But as one of my professors pointed out in my psychology class " what would we be like if we were in slavery, about to be gang raped, killed would our minds be different" It gave me and my peers some food for thought.

Often times Suicide is tragic like the teens who have committed suicide due to bullying or struggling with life. The person actions cause grief among family and friends.

Here in America Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death people aged 15-25. It is the 11th leading cause of death overall. The US ranks 25 th in suicides. Countries with high suicide rates: Japan, Sweden, Germany, and  Russia just to name a few.

I have never tried or thought about suicide. I'm a Christian so I have had to rely on my faith especially when my chronic condition flares up. I know Christians have committed suicide. I have had a few friends that have struggled with it. One of my friends I was able to talk out of doing it. That friend had a rough background.

I think it is important to list the signs that a person may be about to try suicide

  • Ask lots of questions about death
  • Talks a lot about death
  • feels a feeling of hopeless,
  • feels like they have lost a will to live
  • starts posting gloomy messages on social media
  • goes from a depressed state to happy state (could be a person decision has been made)
  • Starts leaving goodbye notes
  • Starts to give away objects that hold value to the person.

If anybody you know has any of these then ask and try to get them to talk you might save their lives.
