I used to mow my lawn and pull the weeds myself until I became busier with work and other things in life, and now I have a company to help with caring for it (I still trim the bushes and trees myself though). Having a nice lawn is mandatory where I currently live because my neighborhood has an association that will hand out hefty fines and force you to pay all kinds of fees if the people checking the neighborhood dislikes the condition of your house, lawn, driveway, color of your paint, etc. =/

How about you? Do you mow your lawn yourself or do you have someone else (family, friends, neighbors, neighbor's kid, or even a company) help with it? Do you even have a lawn that you need to worry about? I'm quite curious about this because recently, lots of people I've been talking to have been purposefully settling down in houses without lawns just so they wouldn't have to worry about association rules or everything that's involved with taking care of a lawn. Some of the elderly people I've met have also decided that this helps them with saving on costs in the long run because they won't have to hire any sort of help (not to mention that they're also the type that's used to doing everything themselves and they don't feel comfortable with asking others to help them, but that's beside the point). Since they can no longer take care of their lawns because their backs would begin to hurt after a few minutes of weeding or crouching and sometimes their weakened knees makes it difficult for them to drive their tractors around on the grass, they finally opted to go lawn-less.

Do you think it's a good idea to forego the lawn altogether or do you figure it's better to have a lawn that people can admire as they walk up to your door?

I like having a lawn, as i prefer open spaces rather than feeling like you're confined to the smallest plot of land ever to exist. I don't have a lawn right now, unfortunately, but if I did I would totally take care of it. The way I see it, only good can come out of owning and taking care of a lawn. Your kids can play around, and mowing the lawn and taking care of it is also a great way to exercise. Also, if you choose to grow plants on the lawn, such as fruits and vegetables, you can harvest the food for the impending apocalypse.

Lexatom : Wow, it sounds like you have some nice plans for the future! Yes, having some space for your children and pets to run around in would be awesome, and I agree that mowing the lawn is a great way to get some exercise while giving your lawn a lovely makeover. lol Admittedly, I haven't really seen anyone grow fruits and vegetables on their lawns (I usually see them tending to their gardens at the back of the house), but I can see how some people might think of trying to grow their own herbs and spices near their front lawn if only to make the entire area a bit more aromatic for their visitors.

Eniitan : Aww... I'm sorry to remind you of your allergies again. But wow, it was very brave of you to mow the garden (even though you didn't know that you were allergic to the grass). oO;;

I have never mowed in my life, the people who own and live in the house do that, and the lawn that we have is pretty big. We have a front one and a side one, and if you were to put those two together, it would be the size of an average house, if not a bit bigger. (We had a wedding reception with seating, a dance floor, and a kitchen area all in the side yard, it's big)

I would probably love to have a yard of that size one day myself, but I wouldn't do the work lol.

People can only see the front lawn though, so it's a shame.

I don't need a huge lawn like some people have but a small one is nice. Dog can have fun, kids can have fun, and on a sunny day you can just relax outside.

Oh and I mow the lawn. It's a chore that isn't too boring so I'm willing to do it lol

zanderlex : Whoa! Wedding reception and all?! That's huge! O _ O XD But your side lawn sounds like it can sort of afford you (and your guests) at least some degree of privacy, so that still sounds pretty good to me.

Furret : Yay! Another guy that mows the lawn! And yep, your idea sounds awesome! Would you also have a small pool outside for the kids and the dog? XD

We have a decent sized yard, but my dad usually does the mowing.I'd love to own a decent amount of land, actually. Some of it clear, but the rest, wooded. I've always thought it was cool how people will have several big trees in their front yard that creates a canopy over the front of the property. I'd also want a decent amount of clear land for things like remote controlled vehicles and fireworks, but I think it would be great to have a fully shaded front yard. And if it covers most of the house, it'll be much easier to keep cool in the summer.

I live in a city that is aggressive about how your lawn looks to the front. The back of our yard backs up to a wooded area, like a small forest reserve, and the back is much more of a free for all.

I would rather not have a lawn. I understand how they make neighborhoods look orderly and such but I think growing more greenery, having more plants and trees and bushes, helps not only the local ecology and animals to thrive, it also keeps water quality up, stops flooding with extensive root systems in the ground, stops erosion, and brings a more natural look instead of an artificial look to the houses. I live south of a large university city and we aren't downtown. There's no need to grow grass when more exotic, enjoyable plants can be left alone to do their own thing.

Grass sucks up water, doesn't add value for the wildlife, and makes things hotter in the summer. Trees, bushes, and shade cool things down and make summers more enjoyable.

I'd rather have a controlled or wild growth out front, not boring old grass. But, like you, Yuna, the city is happy to fine you, cut your grass for you, then charge you for the grass cutting.

Aside from being the one odd person who lives in an apartment (and am fairly content in doing so) if I ever do move into a house I don't think I would want a lawn. I could mow it just fine, but I've never been particularly good with maintaining plants which leads me to think it would either just end up looking horrible or be a nuisance to maintain because I wouldn't be interested in the end result. At the same time it seems kind of pointless just to have an empty plot of grass for a lawn. Not having one would save me money and I would say overall I got way too many other things I want to pursue and learn that it would make having one not very practical
