Every franchise at some point will produce a bad game. Even all time great franchises such as Mega Man, Mario, Sonic, Donkey Kong and Street Fighter as well as others have had bad games. The good news is these franchises were able to recover from their bad games. All of these franchises I mentioned are still going strong today. However there are those franchise that a game is just beyond bad its terrible it kills the franchise. Bubsy 3D falls into that category. Bubsy is a bobcat created to be like sonic. The franchise actually had 3 good or at least decent games come out. Then there was Bubsy 3D. I had to replay this game because I do not remember much about it and there is a reason for that I will get into later on in the review.

Story:7

Bubsy 3D actually had a good plot to it. The Woolies are alien creatures that live on the planet Rayron. The Queens of the Woolies plans had been foiled 3 times by Bubsy the Bobcat. So the aliens kidnap Bubsy from Earth to bring him to their home turf.  However, the Rocket crashes (did Bubsy sabotage it ). Bubsy starts to collect atoms and rocket parts to build a rocket to take him back to Earth. However, he is also stealing stuff from the Woolies to get revenge from them stealing stuff from him in the previous games. However, he has to take on the aliens on their home turf and defeat the generals as well as Queens. Can Bubsy accomplish this. Okay I thought the plot was good. Having the aliens kidnap Bubsy and bring him back is creative. I also like how they tied it into the other games referencing how the aliens invasions of Earth to steal supplies was foiled by their enemy. When I first saw the plot I was like hey this might be an awesome game. Oh but how I would be wrong. So I give the plot a 7 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 3

Oh were to begin about the graphics. The graphics in this game are just horrible. This is a play station game the graphics should have been amazing. The Play Station games were known for amazing graphics. Mega Man Legends I, Mega Man Legends II, Mega Man 8, X4, X5, X6, MLB series line and other games had blow you away type graphics. The graphics in this game are very fuzzy. It looks like the squares and lines you would see when an Atari or Nintendo game got dust on it and you turned it on. If cartridge games had dust on them you would see fuzzy squares and lines. Well that is what you will see if you play this game. Bubsy's SNES games had very good graphics so what happened here? Also the colors are just bad I mean really bad. The colors are for the most part not coordinated and kind of bland. Qburt and breakout (two simple games for the Atari) had better graphics then this. Bubsy's sprites are also a wreck he actually looks blurry. Also there are several lags in this game.  What keeps me from giving this a lower rating than a 3 is there is a colorful background in the later state. In that stage the background of what looks to be like moons is amazing. But outside of that yeah pretty terrible for a play station game.

The controls are just as bad as the graphics. One will find themselves fighting with the controls a lot during this game. It is so easy to get hit or fall of a platform. Moreover, the controls seem like they speed up and slow down. I sometimes had a hard time getting Bubsy to move and jump. So yeah, the graphics and controls are pretty bad. I did not expect this from a Play Station game. Why oh why did the SNES Bubsy games have better graphics and controls than the play station game? Did the makers of this game not test this game out ? It seems like they just through stuff together at the last minute. I hate to do this but I give the graphics and controls a 3 out of 10.

Sound: 3

The sounds in this game is awful. The voice acting is just bad in this game. Bubsy talks way too much in this game. He will talk after you jump on an enemy, shoot at an enemy, climb a platform or get a part. Now if he had a good voice in this game it would not be bad at all. Mega Man in Mega Man legends talks a lot. But his voice sounds right for his character. Bubsy's voice is like a child that keeps asking why and why all over again. Mega Man 8 had horrible voice acting in it. But the thing about Mega Man 8 was it had a good soundtrack. That games music could make you forget about the terrible voices. This game's music is a short soundtrack with dull themes. I like games that have good music to them: Mario, Mega Man, Donkey Kong and etc. Those games make you just want to pause the games and listen. This game will make you want to mute your TV or computer. I remember the other 3 Bubsy games having good music. I have to question what were the makers of this game doing. The music is just boring and dull. The only thing that keeps me from giving the sound a lower rating is the aliens sound okay. The level with the only decent background in this game has a fair theme to it. Thus, I give the sound a very poor 3 out of 10.

Replay Value: 2

Remember earlier in the review when I said I had to replay this game because I did not remember a lot from when I played it the first time. Well, after playing through the game again to jog my memory. I realize why I do not hardly play this game. I'm sorry but this game has so many flaws to it. The terrible graphics, sound, and difficulty for the wrong reasons will turn one off from this game. I find myself playing the other Bubsy games. Bubsy I and II I have played the most in this series. Those games had a lot going for them. I give the replay value of this game a 2 out of 10. Not to much to see here folks.

Depth: 5

I struggled with my rating concerning the games depth. Buby 3D does have some depth to it. There are atoms, items and rocket parts to collect. That seems like quite a bit and should bump the rating up. However, I think of games loaded with lots of depth such as Mega Man and Donkey Kong Country games. Those games had depth ratings of 8, 9 and even 10. Bubsy does not have that kind of depth. The main reason why is the stages are short. Yes, there are lots of stages but they are short. Basically all you do is run around collecting items. It doesn't even take you a while to do this. Thus, I give the depth a middle of the road rating of 5 out of 10. I really expected more. The other SNES Bubsy games had ratings I would say about 7.

Difficulty: 8

The difficulty in this game is hard to rate the reason being its for the wrong reasons. The controls are the main issues in this game. I found myself fighting against the controls more than anything. Its so easy to miss a jump and fall off the pit. It is also easy to not have Bubsy move when you need him too. Also the graphics create a lot of blurs. Thus, you can't see what is in front of you that well. Also the fuzzy lines make it hard to determine if you have already been to. Also the enemies in this game are small making them hard to hit. Its so easy to overlook an enemy and get shot. Also the games flaws in the graphics area make the enemies hard to see. I like games that challenge you that require skill, creativity, problem solving abilities and luck to advance in. I really don't like games that feel difficult for the wrong reasons. Bubsy 3D is just difficult for the wrong reasons; the game is more irritating. So at the end of the day I give this game a difficulty rating of 8 out of 10. But it is for the wrong reasons.

Overall: 4

As I stated in my introduction some games are just so bad they kill their franchise. I think Bubsy 3D killed the Bubsy franchise. Bubsy I and II had good success and were good games. Bubsy III was still a good game. Bubsy 3D (also known as Bubsy 4) came out around 1997/1998. Since then there have not been anymore Bubsy games that I know of. I think I remember reading awhile back how the Atari group, which owns Bubsy, was thinking about bringing Bubsy back. If they do ever bring this once promising character back. They will need to do a reboot of the series. If the Atari group does not do a reboot but still brings Bubsy back they should fix the problems this game had. They need to learn from Mario and Mega Man games. Mega Man II for Game Boy was bad, yet it did not kill the franchise. Instead Capcom realized their error fixed the problems and released Mega Man III, IV and V for Game Boy. Those games were huge hits and allowed the franchise to continue. 20 years later and we still do not have any new Bubsy games that I know of. So its highly possible this game was the nail in the coffin for Bubsy. Its a shame when you think about it because Bubsy had a lot of promise especially in his early games. I think it is also safe to say the makers of this game fumbled on the goal line with this release.

The game did have a good story line going for it. I assume it made people feel excited about playing this game. Then it fell flat when players started playing the game. The games flaws made this one bad. I do not know why this game did not have better graphics. I know the graphics could have been great. Look at other play station games. Look at the intro graphics in this game they were nicely done. So again I must ask what happened here. It makes me think the makers just said " oh well we really don't care lust just throw graphics together and release the game". Its pretty bad when simple Atari games like Qburt and breakout have much better graphics. The controls are another flaw of this game. This game will make one just want to throw the controller due to it being so irritating. The difficulty is wrong for the right reasons.

I really hate to write a bad review for a game. Because I actually liked Bubsy when he first came out. I thought it was something knew and he had promise. In addition I also liked his first two games and even the third game was decent. After replaying this game I realized why I did not remember much about it. That is such a shame too. I think this game should have been great. So would I recommend this game? I hate to say this but no I do not recommend this game. This game just has way too many flaws. Now I will say this if your wanting to give Bubsy a try then give his first two games a try. His first two games are good and one should enjoy them. This game though stay away from unless you like playing really bad games. I think due to the game's flaws the best I can give Bubsy 3D is a 4 out of 10.

I hope Atari will give Bubsy another chance he deserves another chance. He also deserved better then being put in a bad game. As I stated the character had promise and could still be revived. Sad to see a game so bad it literally killed its once promising franchise.
