To put simply, would you take a large sum of money knowing that it would destroy your relationship with your family or parts of your family? I'm talking about a sum that could significantly help your finance situation, like paying off your entire student loan. It would also be a good start for paying off your mortgage. Have you had an experience where you had to make the decision?

I know I'm being a bit vague but I simply just can't give any details. All I can give is a keyword, which is inheritance.

I will definitely give up the money because losing my family would hurt me way more. It hurts, though, that I must give up the inheritance, because in my current situation the money would be of great help in the future (Wedding, mortgage, etc.) The inheritance also symbolizes what a very dear person has left behind, which saddens me. I just really hope that by making the right choice I can still keep my family close to me.

sillysoul : Family is more important than money most people should know that. But, it depends if your family is as loving to you. I know for a fact some others would actually choose money, simply because their family wasn't there for them which I find is an understandable reason.

I know I'm about to sound like a huge d**k, but I would seriously take the large sum of money.
Yeah, family is important, but money is more important. There is more use for money than there is for family, as bad as it is to say.
So, I would take the money, because I could invest that money to earn more money; continue this process and become a billionaire.

Either way you spin it, taking the money has a lot more opportunity.

I would definitely do that, in fact that has been my plan all along and I even do that sometimes now. It's not like anyone in my family cares for anyone else, so I wouldn't even think twice about it.

Right now,I would take a life-altering sum of money. Now,let me explain why. Money can fix almost anything. If I can change my situation to better and then be able to offer financial assistance if need be to my family,I think all would be forgiven.

I am reminded of a quote used by Saito in the anime Rurouni Kenshin. "You can train a dog with food, you can buy a man with money, but no one can tame the Wolves of Mibu!"

sillysoul :

That really sucks. I hate all the dirty things that go on during inheritance. It sickens me. At least if someone passes away family should come together and help comfort one another. But. . . instead what we see is greed and corruption at times.

I bet that makes Yahovah pretty angry.

For me, the question is not "What would I do" but rather "what is the right thing to do"

Is my family just being a prick? What would my dead relative want? I want to do what's right more than anything else, that's how I would make my decision. Do they deserve the inheritance? Or is it rightfully not theirs?

I think that should help you decide how to go about it.

I would take the money.

While family is important, you have to care about your future the most. It may seem egotistical, but it's the correct thing to do. After all, one day you'll have to live by yourself and create your own family. Should you treasure what belongs to the past or what can come in a future you're crafting with your own hands?

If it's an inheritance, then your family will simply break ties with you because of envy or for breaking their greedy dreams of being rich. If that person chose you to inherit the money it's not your fault, and if your family cannot accept it then let them be haters.

I've seen this situation in real life, so I'm talking by my own experience. If your family cannot accept the last will of that person, then maybe they don't care about familiar ties as much as you do and only care about money or what they feel should have been theirs instead of yours.

Palen speaks the truth. If all they really want is the inheritance, one must question if they loved that person. It happened in my family when my grandmother passed away. It got ugly immediately with my aunt and her daughter fighting over what she left behind. It sickened me,I mean, the family matriarch just died and they were acting like vultures after scraps.

But I have to agree that money does not betray you. People betray you.

Thank you all for the comments, they have given me much to think about. Our family has actually a total of three inheritance messes which have gotten a bit ugly *sigh*

I can only say this much about the current issue: My mother and father owned an apartment and when my mom passed away, me and my brother decided not to claim the inheritance right away, so that our dad could keep on living in the same flat. Now the situation is different, because my dad is remarrying and this is where it gets complicated. It's too complicated to explain but what's going on is that me and my brother are going to have to give up our mother's inheritance, so that when my dad passes away his fiance twenty years younger shouldn't have to start paying inheritance money to me and my brother in her elderly days. My father has to talk to his lawyer about this but if it's legal, we are going to have a big mess at our hands because I know my brother is going to put up the biggest fight out of the two of us. It kind of hurts that dad wants us to give up the inheritance just because it's inconvenient for the two of them, and he himself doesn't want a big mess at his hands. I know for sure that I wouldn't have the balls to ask for the same from my kids one day.

sillysoul : In your case, I'll take the inheritance. If it's large enough, you may be able to help some of your most dear siblings and smooth things over.

I think I would take the money and go travel with my closest siblings and loved ones. I am not sure about buying a house since I'd rather travel and enjoy the memories but, I could also help my loved ones with medical bills, mortgage, and gifts that would help them live a somewhat more relaxed life. They'll come around eventually. Family is Family no matter what.

Try to balance them both out by doing things your family would like with that money then you'll all be satisfied.

sillysoul : That's an awfully ugly mess. Personally, I would take the money.

I would really, really recommend speaking to a lawyer (or two, don't be scared to get a second opinion) about what you can do and what would be best for you. Your mom obviously left you that money for a reason. If you pass it up now to make somebody else happy, you could be really resentful about it in later years.
