So I'm literally on the verge of buying a game for $40 that is on sale on PSN for $7.50 as I type this. Money is not an easy thing to come by for me as many of you probably know, and in fact I haven't had a penny to my name in probably six months. Fortunately I have about $30 in my Amazon funds already so it's only $10 more. Still I could easily save that money and I know I'll regret spending it but my inner collector resents buying anything digitally instead of physically if I really have the choice.

The game by the way is Tales of Hearts R for the PlayStation Vita. Bonus points: it's PlayStation TV compatible. :3

So how about you? Have you ever played a substantial amount more for a physical copy? If not, is there a game you would be willing to do so for?

There are only two instances where I would pay far more for a physical copy. If it were a portable game that I wanted to play on actual hardware, or if the game has features that can only be accessed properly through the use of peripherals that can't be emulated, I would buy it. In most cases, though, I'm totally fine with going digital.

Well, for me personally, it comes down entirely to which platform / console we're talking about. Though some times file size will also play a small part in the decision, since digital memory is a limited commodity.

When it comes to a system like Steam, where no matter what happens to my current hard ware, every game I've ever purchased ( and even some of the save files, if they have Cloud support ), will still be there when I get back, then I'm all about going digital. Heck, I didn't use my Steam account for nearly 3 years, and everything was exactly how I left it when I came back, which earns their service a ton of bonus points in my opinion. Not to mention it's much easier for a physical disk or cartridge to get damaged than it is to destroy a pre-configured file to the point it's unplayable.

That being said, when it comes to consoles and / or handhelds, then I would much rather have the physical copies, at least for the modern titles any way. Most of them are too big in size to adequately store as many as you would like on the memory provided, or even with added external memory. If it comes to playing a PS1 game on my PS3, I have no problems going digital ( and little choice due to the lack of backwards compatibility ).

The only time I'll really go out of my way to pay more is if the game is too big for the hard drive, or if it's a game that I love enough to want to be able to visually see in my collection on the bookshelf. I will admit it's more satisfying to be able to actually see and touch the copy of the game lol.

I would be okay with digital copies,it is cheaper for everyone. But I harbor worries that the data would be corrupted. I like the physical copies for being able to have it until I decide to sell it.  Or for authenticity purposes on a console.

It really depends on the game and how big the price difference is. I used to be much like you but over the years I think I've started to favor a more economical approach. The only games I would go out of my way to get a physical copy of would be my most anticipated games that I'm relatively sure I'll actually get my money's worth out of regardless so typically games from established franchises I enjoy.  I also don't really care if it's a relatively small price difference between physical and digital and will usually favor a physical copy in that scenario.

On the other hand if it's a smaller release then there's a decent chance I'll go for a digital copy in stead since it's usually cheaper and just easier than having to go my nearest game store for every purchase when they may not even stock it. If there's a big PSN sale or something of the sort then I would also get the game digitally in stead of a physical copy. Same would apply if there's just a big price difference in general, an example being Shovel Knight which cost about the equivalent of 15 dollars for me on PSN but 40 dollars for a physical copy, in that case I easily went for digital. It also has the added bonus of not having to worry about your discs becoming scratched so that's pretty neat

Mynamescox44 : With PS4 and Xbox One the entire game is actually installed onto the hard drive when you insert a disc, so physical copies are more or less obsolete aside from the collector value and being able to play it on multiple PSN accounts.

I too had this question one too many times. I still have my trust issues with digital copies but, gave it a try, actually 5 tries lol and bought 5 digital games to play on WiiU for less than $25 and they work amazing. Though I do like the option of having a hard copy so I can take it with me and play elsewhere and not have to log in into my account on someone's console.

Zlinqx :
Really? I had no idea the newest generation was set up that way.

I mean I could understand downloading even large portions of the game, to decrease loading time and what not, but the entire freaking game? Seems like overkill to me, but then again I have no in-depth expertise on why consoles work the way they do. I just mean that even with a 1 Terabyte Hard Drive, modern titles can range around 40 GB per game, give or take ( and there's a lot of give and take in there lol ). I can't imagine it would take long to completely max out the internal Hard Drive since it's set up that way, ya know? I mean I could understand if they made the Drive easily removable and interchangeable like the 360 did, at the bare minimum with an option for external ones, but still it seems kind of like an a-hole move in my opinion.

Are they at least playable with out the disc, since the entire game is already on the Drive?

Mynamescox44 : Depends on the game... although most will not. You can also install the disc itself to a console (or used to be able to on 360) but you'd still need the disc itself to confirm its authentic...

a lot of games these days do read the disc at the same time.. but im no console expert so yeah....

Mynamescox44 : No they aren't. The PS4 seems to somehow use the disc for verification even though more or less the entire game is installed onto it which is kind of weird.

It's also problematic considering now they can just make you install however much data they want. Many games don't only install the game from the disc but also make you install additional data in the form of patches and other things using the online servers. Which aside from just taking longer to do. mean they don't even have to bother compressing it like they would in the past when the actual game was on the disc which means they often take up even more space than neccessary. The PS4 had about 500gb harddrive space at launch and some games like GTA 5 or The Witcher 3 now take up maybe 50-60gb space so you can see how that's a problem if you intend on buying a lot of AAA titles, especially with this being the age of open world games that have massive worlds. I constantly have to delete games I haven't played in a while to make room for new ones.

NovemberJoy : I could see that. Honestly about the only time I get digital over physical is when the digital is free as a PS+ download. Lol I'm not a sellout... But if you want to bribe me with free games, we can talk.

Mynamescox44 : Yes sir, every PS4 game to my knowledge requires a full install, so as Zlinqx said it pretty much renders physical obsolete minus the collector purposes. Also it's good for people who can't download games. For example: I wouldn't have bought a PS4 when I did had it been digital only because I didn't have a way to download games. Even now that I do, it's so slow that I couldn't have downloaded the game that was bundled with mine (Arkham Knight) because it's 49 GB without patches and would take me literally over half a year to download. Lol And yeah the disc still has to be inserted despite the install. One upside is that you can uninstall and reinstall when space demand is high without having to redownload. But even then I think digital can be backed up to flash drive for reinstall later...I think.

Handhelds however don't fully install. The PlayStation Vita installs a small amount of data from a cartridge but not nearly all of it. In fact it took Freedom Wars from I think 4GBs digital to like 4MB to install the required data for physical to play. That's a lifesaver, especially given the memory card prices.
I don't think 3DS installs anything at all with physical.

Even still, I prefer physical just because, as a collector, I love seeing that game case on my shelf. Seeing icons on the screen just isn't the same at all.

Oldschool777 : I trust digital as I actually have probably thirty digital games (some from games that have no physical release, and some from PS+) but like you, I just prefer having the copy of it. It gives more of a sense of ownership to have the physical disc/cartridge handy to me.

Zlinqx : Yeah I get that. And honestly I fought with myself over this purchase for a while but I can't do it man. I just get so much more enjoyment from physical copies. In fact I seem to be more apt to actually play a game if I have it on disc/cartridge for some reason. I guess it's just how it always was ever since I was a kid so I'm stuck in that still. I don't know.

jlove92 : Hey you just gave me another reason to support physical copies! Thanks! Lol I hadn't thought of playing on someone else's console. And as I told Oldschool, I have a ton of digital games (roughly a third of my 100 or so games are digital) but I just don't like them as much. And as a collector, digital just doesn't work as well for me. I need something to put on my shelf! Lol

If it's just an average game, and the digital price is cheaper, then I will probably go for the digital version only, or if it's a pc game, where I'll almost always go for the digital because it's so much easier.

However, I will gladly spend a ton of money for any physical games, even PC ones if they are a part of some collection or limited edition thing.

For example, a few months ago I bought the collectiors edition of Song of the Deep. It's a mainly digital game, but I paid twice as much and got the disk, a steam code, and a few other things.
