It's nice to be seen as a shining pillar of moral strength. A paragon of virtue. Some people are truly quite heroic, but what makes a person a "hero"? Do they need overwhelming strength, an ego to match, or anything like that? Not to me, actually. I believe a hero is someone who has the courage to help oneself (through self-confidence) and help others despite their own fears. A hero is someone who risks their life to do the right thing in the end, despite no one else doing so. That's what I believe. What do you think makes one a  "hero"?

The question is, what's the difference between being a hero, and being a soldier?

The answer would be plenty. Heroes are an image, one that may or may not represent their abilities. In the traditional sense, they would head off to come to the rescue of anyone in danger, but this isn't smart. A soldier -- or any kind of fighter or warrior for that matter, would strategically plan his approach before making a move, and execute it swiftly.

A hero is in the eye of the beholder, otherwise they are nothing more than a protector, or in a lot of cases, a moron. The only thing to a hero is his image, and his image alone.

Don't be a hero.

Like yoshi said, a hero is different for each person. I think most people outside of China would consider to Mao Zedong to be one of the world's most brutal dictators. However, a lot of people inside or from China believe that Mao was truly a hero. A hero for one can be a villain for someone else.

I think a hero is a selfless person who puts others needs and/or wants before his/her own. They go out of their way to help those who can't help themselves. A hero is not just some buff dude who gets all the chicks, it can easily be anyone. Like the OP said, the biggest thing about a hero is how much courage they have in doing what they feel is right.

Bread, meat, cheese, and maybe some mayo makes a perfect hero.

Er. I'd say that anyone who can be looked up as a role model for whatever reason can be viewed as a hero. They don't even have to do anything special or big, just that the way they act and do stuff, and the little things, can change how the people around them are.
