Hey there! If you're anything like me, you love being scared out of your pants and are always looking for the next scary game you can get your paws on. I can say with confidence that the Fatal Frame games were the first, and so far only, series to ever actually scare me. Granted, being scary isn't really a necessity. Like Silent Hill 2. At least for me, Silent Hill 2 wasn't exactly scary, but the atmosphere was perfectly dark and eerie and it was just easy to get lost in the depth of the story.

That's what I want. Something that really just sucks you into the darkness of the world and makes you constantly fidget as you hesitantly turn each corner because you have absolutely know idea what could be around it.

There are no holds barred from this request. If it was a game that made you squirm or jump or sleep with the lights on, I want to know about it!

And if you aren't someone who's ever gotten into horror games, maybe this thread will help you out, too! 'Tis the season for horror!

I would suggest spookys house of jumpscares. Starts off nice and happy and progressively eats your mind as you play. Plus I think its free.

zanderlex : It is free, at least on steam, I have it, and you're right, It starts off soft cute and innocent......The first pop-up jump scare made me fall outta my chair, and it was a freaking cut-out! They recently changed the name to Spooky's Jump scare mansion, though....

Jump Scares:
Resident Evil (4 and earlier, Especially the GameCube remake of 1)
Dead Space 1 + 2
Doom 3 (kind of. it has a dark atmosphere to it, but also fast paced)
F.E.A.R. (a lot like Doom 3. it's a FPS with horror aspects)
The Suffering (3rd person shooter with horror elements. dark as s***)
Shadows of the Damned (less horror, more Resident Evil 4 feel)

Suspense:
Silent Hill
The Evil Within (has plenty of action as well)
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
Clock Tower (PSX. a true classic)
Comdemned: Criminal Origins
Manhunt (little less horror, more gruesome killing)
The Last of Us (one of my top 3 of all time)

I tried to categorize them the best I could, but a lot of these games have a bit of both in them. I've also played all but a couple of them, and recommend them all if they are a genre you enjoy, as they vary in style of play.

Hope this helps your search

Check out Outlast. Great horror game that has jump scares and some suspense, it's in a first person view, but it's not a shooter. Probably one of my favorite modern horror games, the story is awesome, the game play is badass.

Mynamescox44 : I love your list! I've played some of them. One of my favorites is The Suffering! That game is one of my all-time favorites! Just the concept behind the monsters and the plot and motivation are so intense! You can tell I'm pumped because I'm using so many exclamation marks!

Of course, Eternal Darkness was my pride and joy in middle school. I actually brought the box with me to school multiple times just to show it off to my friends and show them how amazing it was. Talk about Lovecraftian awesomeness! (I always went with Xel'lotath as the main antagonist Ancient. She was my favorite voice actor of the three.)

Mynamescox44 : Thanks for the heads up! This game sounds amazing! I'm going to look it up now!

sonicbros : I'm so excited for Resident Evil 7! It looks like it's going to be amazing! I love that it seems to be going back to it's survival horror roots and maybe a bit more... what's the word I want? Not surreal, but sort of understated and gritty in a way. It kind of reminds me of that amazing trailer for Silent Hills minus all of the supernatural stuff.

The backwoods family at the end of the latest trailer is what really sold me. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTHS1G1Cod0)

If you don't know the Silent Hills trailer I'm talking about, it's this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY91vV0rWr4

I enjoyed playing FEAR. The first one made me jump a couple times but any of the games after the first didn't have much of an effect on me. It's a really good shooter too if you're into those kinds of games. Another good one which a lot of people would probably consider overrated is Amnesia: The Dark Descent. I actually quite enjoyed it and it made my heart rate go up a good number of times. It's really intense. Once you're done the main story there are tons of user created stories to play as well and some of them are even scarier than the original story.
