We all wish for some simpler times, right? I've a;ways been a guy who's somewhat stuck in regards to adopting trends; I like reading novels where most people my age do not, I don't care for social media, I watched television regularly (Until cable was cut off permanently), I played with my toys long after most had given up on them, my cellphone was a flip phone model (I've replaced it, but I almost never use my smart phone at all outside of calling people), etc.  I've never been in on things like selfies or internet memes.

Would you consider yourself old-fashioned? Is there anything modern in which you are familiar with? Thanks for taking time out of your busy lives to help out.

In a way yes I was, but I got complained at to get into the modern kind of things. Mostly for clothes and fashion I am like no I dress how I want too really and what makes me feel comfortable as well. That aside I like being old fashioned there is nothing wrong with being one. Not everyone is so its what you like is what you do.

Sword legion : I laughed when I saw your first comment, then I thought, "You know what? It is."

I'm CIS gender as well. I was born with male chromosomes, body parts and I've stayed the course of doing things that are traditionally male oriented. I like women, I've never thought about dating dudes, I don't walk this massively gray area of gender-fluid sexuality where I'm asexual but I love sex or I'm agender, fluid gender, gender nonconforming, gender questioning, pangender, trans, trans(anything), or the 50+ options Facebook allows people.

I'm a guy. I like guy stuff. That's old skool.

I'm also in the generation that experienced both no internet as a kid and internet growing up. I was born in 1981 so I have seen the world from both sides. I understand the argument on both sides regarding the internet and prevalence of technology in the world and being able to look at both sides and see the points makes me old-fashioned. I may shun technology for a minute because I see a value that kids these days simply cannot understand. It's unfathomable for them to know what it was like prior to the internet, or cell phones, or answering machines.

It doesn't make me better but it lets me balance my picks for using technology or avoiding technology. This goes for all facets of life and that choice makes me old-fashioned. Sometimes I opt to do it like the old days. Sometimes I cheat and google. Sometimes I fire up the snowblower. Sometimes I grab a shovel and work my back.

Didn't know gender had anything to do with being old fashion but alright lol.
Nah, I'm not very old fashion, I like being independent  and I can't go with out internet or technology. I prefer the way things are headed with most things, people are becoming more open minded and that's not how things were back in the day and it's just gross in my opinion.

What Cap'n said.

Even opinions and the way people acted 10 years ago is disgusting. So simple-minded and just mean. People apparently still live with that mind-set and think it's justifiable to be rude and close-minded because they're "Old school"
Along with everything else, are there styles from before I like? Yes. Like the whole emo/punk culture from 2005 I find really cool looking, etc... but I don't want to live in the past. I don't want to be stuck there. There's nothing wrong with being old-fashioned, but if you refuse to adapt with the times, that's a major problem.

Well I'm an old school type of guy.  I don't get into the trends. I'm probably still stuck in the 80's and I like it that way. I don't like today's style. I like to wear shorts and a t-shirt. In the cooler months I wear a sweatshirt.   I don't like modern music. I like music from 1955-1990. The first cellphone I got was just a basic phone and then a flip phone. It wasn't till about 3/4 years ago I finally got a smartphone. I also embraced social media when it came out.

I also have noticed how people just seemed to respect one another more in the 80's. Now its if you don't agree with me or not politically correct. Then your a bigot or a racists. In the 80's it was well we agree to disagree and that was that. It just seems people were more civil back in the 80's.

It depends on the topic and what's going on.
I hate most morden cartoons, and a lot of Morden games aren't that great either.

But that's not to say I hate the new stuff that's coming out. What gets me, is we have better tech but now all of the games, TV, and what not are much worse imo.

Not to mention I had much more free time on my hands. so I'd say yeah I guess I am old school.

No, I am not old-fashioned. I'm not very old myself, so I don't really have a lot of experiences to be "old-fashioned" with. I don't really like a lot of songs from the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's or whatever. A few here and there are pretty alright, but other than that I'm not a fan. I don't really like a lot of old-fashioned things, not to say that they are bad, but they're mostly just not for me. I think being old-fashioned is cool, as long as it is not accompanied by close-mindedness. That is where the problems start. Judging other people or things based on outdated beliefs is pretty stupid in all honesty. I embrace new trends, for the most part (besides Pokémon Go ) and roll with it. There's no point in being adamant and stubborn in sticking with old customs and beliefs if they are proven to be false and outdated.

On a side note, I don't understand how being a cis gendered person is "old-fashioned". Last time I checked, the wide majority of the population was still straight, and LGBTs are not as common as straight people.

Ghostbear1111 : "I'm a guy. I like guy stuff. That's old skool." What exactly is guy stuff? Is it watching sports? Just as an example, even if sports was considered "guy stuff", 2015's Super Bowl had the highest number of viewers all time. Is it something else? Sorry if I misunderstood what you said.

RDay13 : There are two things working here with your last post. Please allow me to give you perspective.

Twenty years ago, there was no such thing as "CIS-Gendered." I had to look it up. It didn't exist as I was growing up. Culturally, the United States basically had gay, straight, very little else. Perhaps it's better to call it an anachronism instead of 'old-timey' when someone is simply a guy. Those of us are calling it old-fashioned because we remember a different time when you were men and women, straight, or.... there were different words and none really accepted by a community at large. Queer was one. Gay, homosexual, those were others. There was a technical term but not a social term that accurate covered the depth and breadth of social structures within the LGBT community. I'm not saying we were right or it's worse now. It's definitely better for everyone. But I can't wrap my head around the importance of indicating my sexuality, my gender identity, and other factors. I'm just 'a guy.' I consider that old-fashioned because it is what was done in the past and is not necessarily normal anymore. Now I'm outside the norm.

I define guy stuff as things that males traditionally enjoy and in much higher percentages compared to females. Sports, for example, can be guy stuff whereas a larger percentage of males watch football compared to females.

To me, the Superbowl isn't "sports." The Superbowl isn't even football. It's about the celebrities, the party, the commercials, the social interaction of the Superbowl party, and Katy Perry. I was at a Superbowl party a few years ago and they had two TVs featuring the game. One was downstairs, one upstairs. During actual play, everyone was walking around, refilling their drinks, talking, playing with their kids, and doing everything except watching football. During the commercials, it was all "SHHHH! COMMERCIALS!" or "SHHHH, HALF TIME SHOW!" So I went downstairs to watch football in peace. People started floating downstairs to see what was going on, they herded together, talked through the play, and I went upstairs. I spent the game with my wife being chased by people who wanted to talk. They weren't in it for the competition. Safe to say I never went back to that house.

It's not football. It's pageantry and affectation.

Texas knocking off Notre Dame in two overtimes last week is football. How many women watched that one? Very few that I know of. I know some women that are willing and happy to watch a Tuesday night MAC game on ESPN2, but what percentage of that television audience is XX chromosome? Ergo: Guy stuff.

More Guy Stuff:

1. Throwing handaxes at my neighbor's Tomahawk Range in his backyard.
2. Repairing the compressor for my fridge.
3. Changing the oil for my Honda CR-V.
4. Throwing the passes of a route tree to my high school neighbor so he can improve.
5. Splitting and stacking wood in the backyard.
6. Sparring with my boxing partner at the gym.
7. Brewing an IPA, the first time I've done that in five years, just last week.

Those are things that women do, for sure. However on any given day, a check of who's teaching and throwing skinny posts or steeping hops for ale or lager, I'm betting an overwhelming percentage is going to be people who identify themselves as 'guys' regardless of gender.

Guy stuff.

Even if you don't agree, does that make sense as an alternative perspective?

Ghostbear1111 : I'm gonna be honest, I don't really agree with you on many things. Or at all, really. This post is pretty sexist in my opinion, but that's not why I wanted to make this post.

Idk, it might be dumb but I made this point to like congratulate you I guess? On like being able to express that kind of opinion in a way that doesn't come off as offensive or something. Without attacking someone else or their opinion. It's very civil and cool, which is more than can be said when some other users talk about this kind of topic.

Keep it up my man.

We all stay in a certain time period for things. Whether it be for fashions, music, movies, society,or what have you. I admit I am stuck in my ways, and I really see little reason to change my views on many things. Considering the state of society and the world in large,I am inclined to think we did it right in the past. Did we do everything right in the past? No. But when you consider that everything has flipped on its head, maybe we need to consider doing things the way it used to be done.

1. Society-Back in my parents' day, people actually had a little respect for each other and were actually human. I'll give an example: Say you are having trouble paying your electric bill, back then the company would work with you and you would pay a bit more each month and would not cut your power like they would today.

2. Settling differences-When I was in school and another kid kept going after me,I would ignore him as long as I could and then when a peaceful solution could not be found, then we settled it with our fists. Rarely was a knife introduced and even rarer a gun. Nowadays, kids are so quick to pick up a gun,so quick to pull a trigger, rather than talking or if need be,talking with their fists.

3. Common Sense-People used to have sense way back when. People did not need to be told to not let water come into contact with electronics,or to keep a plastic bag away from kids,or to let someone who was elderly or injured go ahead of you. Nowadays,if we do not have an app for it,we are lost.

4. Being Thankful-Back then, people would thank each other for any aid rendered and in some cases we would write a thank you note. Now people expect things to be done for them and they act like little turds when it is not done immediately.

5. SJW/PC stuff-Back then,we did not need 'safe spaces',we did not have to use soft language,we could communicate in any way we wished and here is the funny part, most people we okay with that. Now,we have special little snowflakes running around, demanding that vast majority conform for the few.

6. Roles-We had two genders, male and female. We did not have transgender,transvestite,trans-whatever screwing things up for everyone. Yes,women can work on cars and men can do needlepoint if they want and that is fine,it is called expanding your skill set. But people that want everything to change and want the world to accept them by turning themselves into freakshows is not courage,it is stupidity.

Sorry, that it went on for a while. Maybe in a few hundred years our current generation will be seen as revolutionary or groundbreaking, but I have a difficult time accepting all this, quite frankly, unnecessary change.

Maguc : It takes a lot of... bravery? No, I got it. It takes a lot of boldness to cross the line you just did. Let's be honest: We're not friends. I would go so far as to say we actively dislike each other.

It makes sense too. We both have a strong sense of code, ethics, and morals. I'd bet we'd agree a lot more with each other if we weren't so spirited in our beliefs. I don't care for what you've said in the past and I'm pretty sure you're not often pleased when I lean in with my opinion. I've agreed with you in the past, like with the Pledge of Allegiance conversation, but I've been reticent to say something. That conversation was spiraling out of control anyway.

I appreciate the encouragement. It's been a goal of mine to present either my opinion or at least an alternate view without stirring the pot. I try to take emotion out of a majority of what I add on here but there's always some way to bother somebody. I think most of it is the reception of the message, not the message.

I'm working on it. Thanks for the nod.

Oldschool777 : So, apparently, gender equality is unnecessary. Alright.

Society - Bad example. Sure, the companies have to respect you, but you also have to respect them by you know paying the bills on time, and respect them not to take a commitment you can't honor.

Common Sense - People have always been the same level of intelligence for the last 100 years or so. We are just more connected to the internet, so learning about something dumb someone did half-way across the world is easier, but it's always been the same.

SJW/PC stuff - Well of course you don't care about that. I don't mean to go all tumblr, but you are a cis white male. Statistically speaking, you've probably never experience a big form of oppression or in-equality, or anything of the sort. You can't understand it.

Roles - What's wrong with being trans, though? Does it affect you? Of course it doesn't! You might look at one person through the internet as a "Freakshow", but really, at the end of the day, does it really affect you?

And if you really can "See little reasons to change my views" or that "We did it right in the past" that's just...eugh.

Maguc, you and I will always disagree. That won't change.

1. They do not have to respect you,but maybe you ran into hard times,or an unexpected expense. And they would work with you to make a plan.
Guess you never had that happen, lucky you.

2. I think people were a bit smarter 100 years ago. We actually knew how to do stuff without consulting a smart phone.

3. I do not honestly. Maybe because it is the whiny few that want changes that do not benefit anyone else.

4. Other than that person basically becomes an outcast? Roles exist for a reason, but way to cherry pick pal.

You did your job and go on with your life. You did not seek attention for every little thing. So forgive me if I cannot see the negatives.
