As most of you are probably aware, I lost a bet and this is my punishment. Now, I promised a certain someone that I'd make this thread today so here we go.


Let's start with some history, shall we? My Little Pony first made its appearance in 1981 in the form of toys, going by the name My Pretty Pony. The brand was renamed to the name we all know and love in 1982 and that year also introduced all the various ponies we know today. The first animated series aired in 1986 and from there the show skyrocketed to what it is today.

Besides rainbows and glitter the first thing that pops into most people's heads when they think about the show are the characters.
Most notable ones include the purple unicorn Twilight Sparkle, the orange earth pony Applejack, the pink-haired pegasus Fluttershy, the purple haired unicorn Rarity, the pink earth pony Pinkie Pie, the rainbow haired pegasus Rainbow Dash and the purple dragon Spike.
An episode of the show usually focuses on at least one of the main characters.

There's a ton of side characters as well that I won't expand on but the most notable ones are probably Princess Celestia and Princess Luna.
Like any other cartoon there are also a few villains / antagonists and even they have been made goofy to entertain the viewer.

Now next is a topic that I've wanted to discuss for a little while and this is the perfect opportunity to do so.

There has been a lot of hate towards a group of people who call themselves "bronies". They're basically fans of the show but are a lot older or a different gender than the targeted audience. I personally don't care for the show whatsoever, I think the only thing I've ever watched that involved My Little Pony was a crossover with Ace Attorney on YouTube.

However, I think it's ridiculous that they're getting such a negative treatment. I mean sure, if you shove the fact that you're a "brony" down my throat every time we talk then I probably won't like you but everyone is still free to like what they want. I'll never understand what's so great about the show and I don't want anyone to explain it to me either. I'm fine with "bronies" existing and liking the show as long as they don't try to convert me or whatever like they're some Jehovah's Witnesses (and yes I've encountered a few of those).

In the end I'm still glad the show exists. I saw my cousin watch it when she was younger and she got a lot of joy from it. And that's what it should be, a cartoon that gives the people watching it joy. The internet just took it way too far and gave it and the people watching it a bad reputation. I mean yeah, I've joked around with it a couple of times but when there's people that are literally saying that My Little Pony and "bronies" are worse than Hitler I think there's a problem.

Bronies ended up ruining my enjoyment of the series, so I stopped watching it somewhere in season 4, I think. But nice speech!  The MLP Ace Attorney crossover thing was my favorite fanmade thing aside from Friendship is Witchcraft.

I don't watch MLP either, but this is a pretty good speech about MLP you have there :p. And I agree, the hate against the bronies is getting pretty ridiculous. It's like the one thing that will get you hate no matter what. I used to have a friend who liked MLP, and her bf also liked MLP and I never really had a problem with that :v.

I've actually watched a lot more of this show than I ever intended to because I've got 3 girls and they like it a lot.

I can honestly say the show is pretty good. Not as good as some people make it out to be but it's watchable. Still, pretty entertaining that you had to do this. I laughed when I realized what was going on

I used to watch it a lot. I was really into it. I watched to around season 2. There's like 6 seasons now? That's weird.
Looking back on it, I was probably so into it because of the craze. It's a decent show, around a 7/10 (Atleast, the episodes I saw) but it was meh at best.

Both extremities of bronies are ridiculous and stupid. Excessive brony/pony lovers and haters a really annoying and are usually just like that because they can't form their own opinions and it's the internet forcing it's opinion on them.

My sisters watch it from time to time, and it shuts them down for like half an hour, so in my book it's a good show just for that.

why do you do this to yourself?

I've seen a little bit of MLP, when I was at my dad's house. My sisters really like it, and honestly, it's not that bad. It's pretty decent.

Furret : MLP is...actually pretty good sometimes. I mean, I wanted to get into it a while back, and enjoyed a lot of it...but I just couldn't bring myself to keep on keepin' on. Partially the embarrassment, partially a lack of courage, partially I just felt the show was sometimes sappy and false.

On a side note, Leggy's the one who first showed me the ropes of mafia, but the folks on /r/PLoungeMafia on Reddit helped show me a more in-depth view of mafia and inspired the new forum. They largely come from the subreddit /r/MLPLounge, a more liberal/laid back subreddit that discusses stuff related to MLP and other stuff. But even so, many of them worked with me to show me the ropes and complexities of mafia and I'm grateful for that. We'd have discussions from time to time about things related to mafia. I don't play with them right now, but they did point me in a good direction, I feel.

Hey, you forgot us Mormons We love a good conversion But we're told not to frequently bug you if you're not interested.

On a similar note, please look up 3 Nephi 3:7. Back when I was in Seminary (Church studies/fun for teens), 1 Nephi 3:7 was called "scripture mastery". That meant we had to try to memorize it. It's often quoted. But I've heard horror stories where missionaries got the scriptures mixed up and quoted this one instead I can only imagine the horror on the faces of the investigators (the term for people who are looking into the Church). Or perhaps even worse, they read verse 8 as well and leave off the rest The backstory for those verses is that a band of robbers/murderers wants others to join with them and give them stuff or basically, they threaten to kill them. Cool stuff, you know.

Furret, I honestly could not agree more. My Little Pony is probably the greatest thing that has ever been created, and you, without a doubt, have brought many people to the promised land of My Little Pony by just making this thread.

And hey, you kept your promise so that is pretty cool lol.

Actually about 2 years back I started watching some of Friendship is Magic, I only watched maybe 5 episodes or so before I got busy, and I just never got interested in it again, so yeah. 

Thing is this really isn't exclusive to MLP fans. People will hate on any group who like anything that is considered out of the norm. Mostly because it's the in thing to do to fit in and it makes them feel better/above those people.The reason MLP faced more than most is that it's one of the most extreme examples being a show targeting little girls. Irronically that's also what caused the fandom to grow so fast which in turned resulted in more haters. In truth I could care less about what other people obsess about as long as it's not affecting anyone else, yes there are a few overzealous/annoying bronies but that goes for any fanbase. There are a ton of better things to be annoyed at.

That said while I'd say it's a good show I do feel it's overrated since there are plenty of other shows of similar quality with much smaller fanbases. I think a lot of the popularity also came from people being overtaken by the craze and wanting to be part of the community it created more so than it being like the best cartoon show ever made. Not that it's a bad thing though, if it brings people enjoyment then that's great. In fact that's coming from someone who watched a few seasons himself when it was just gaining ground.

Anyway kudos to you for turning a joke thread into something that a discussion can be had from. Even if this topic doesn't seem that relevant anymore.

I liked My Little Pony when it first made its appearance and when I first saw the toys (I thought they were cute), and I enjoyed the first few seasons (skipped through random episodes), although what I liked best about it is probably still the 1984? or so openings because for some reason, they reminded me of the way Disney's Fantasia was animated. lol

I won't lie when I say I have watched the show, and was quite surprised at how good the writing was. Though it didn't really interest me so I stopped watching it after awhile. But it held my attention due to the writing as well as the characters and that is something a TV show hasn't done since I saw Sonic SatAM.

First off,my sympathies. It sucks to lose a bet,but at least you went through with it.

I will explain why they get the hate and why it is wrong.

Now,as I understand,a brony is outside the target demographic. It is good that they are willing to go against the grain and enjoy something. And if it does teach a lesson,that is something that has sorely been lacking since the 80's. Like when GI Joe was on the air. After the daily good vs. evil fight,a PSA (public service announcement) would be made about a kid that is about to do something stupid or when a kid does not know what to do in a situation. Then a Joe would come in,the kids know him,and he would teach the youngster a lesson or explain why he should not do an action. And let us not forget the catchphrase, "And knowing is half the battle."

Let me explain where the hate comes in. There are tons of talented people on various sites like Deviant Art that post media about MLP. Now a lot of the submissions are about love for the show,but quite a bit of it is in poor taste or NSFW. There is an old saying, "No one will remember the good that is done,only the bad." And if people see the stuff in poor taste,anyone that is a brony is targeted,even if said brony disagrees with the stuff in bad taste. You are guilty by association. Now fanatics about anything make it look bad. MLP just happens to have a huge portion of its fanbase that does awful things in the name of fandom. Just like people that do horrible Sonic fanfics.

Do they deserve the hate? No. But at the same time if they admit to liking it,they,in a way,encourage the bad things to keep coming. We know that bronies are people,they have the same needs as us,they just march to the beat of their own drummer. It is okay to like it,but do not go to the dark side of fandom. People have been hassled for it,I even heard that one fan of Steven Universe fan was driven to attempt suicide because of bullying. Because she did fanfics and the fans went berserk over it.

In closing,let me say,there is nothing wrong with liking MLP. But when people do creepy stuff in the name of fandom,you do get targeted even when you disagree with it and in a way encourage the creepy things. Remember people,things you like are like a wheel,it will spin around to your time. Just like people who are comic book geeks. Right now is probably the best time to be a comic book geek.
