So, this thread is basically dedicated to the Resident Evil franchise as a whole.

What's your favorite entry of the series? Have you ever played them to begin with? Do you have any interest in doing so?

Do you feel, as I do, that the quality, or at least direction, of the more modern titles are losing what made them great in the first place?

How do you feel each of the titles stack up to one another, or other games in the same genre?

Anything else about these games you would like to bring up in general?

I have never played Resident Evil except for when I started playing the first one two days ago. I am quite confused about what to do in it or where to go. Right now I am just kinda exploring until some new thing in the story happens. The game is fun but I really want to get to play 3 because of Nemesis. He seems really awesome. The negative reviews from Umbrella Corps get me in to thinking that the new games are getting much worse than the old ones. I have also heard that it is more action now and less survival and horror.

My favorite and first in the series would be RE 2. That game actually scared me at some points and the game was just flawless. I love how you can play with more than one character and their being two story lines that are directly connected. I love the sound track and the character models in the game. I honestly think the game is far better than 4. Many people think that 4 is easily the best installment in the series but I beg to differ and I know I'm deffinantly in the minority.
Mynamescox44 : what is your favorite installment?

In my other thread as you saw. Mine is resident evil 4. It had a lot of improvement and installment not the other previous games had. And I felt in that way it was really special. I've come to see the other resident evil games. And I don't know why I do like them but I like the 4th one more. Maybe it gave out something not a lot of the other ones did? Or maybe its just me. So yeah that's my feelings based on it. XD

It's awesome you're finally giving the games a try. It's definitely one of my favorite franchises, the more modern titles (5 and everything after) excluded. I feel your pain on the whole being confused what to do next thing. I've had to use a guide more than once to figure out where to go or to figure out exactly how to go about doing something in these games. The nice thing about 3, as well as 2 to a lesser extent, is something like Nemesis makes quite a few appearances, and since they're darn near invulnerable at the time, really forces you to fear for your life and have no options other than running away. If I remember correctly, Nemesis can also go through doors to some extent, so running from him isn't as easy as simply leaving the room, which is a nice touch

RE 2 was also my first game of the franchise, and is right behind number 4 as my favorite. Leon has always in my opinion been the best character of the franchise, and his story lines never disappoint. If you don't count 6 anyway lol. Another great thing about 2 was when you completed either story line, you could continue the file as the other character, and their story would actually play out differently, giving you option to play through the game 4 different times, and it being at least somewhat varied each time.

My favorite of the franchise is definitely 4, with 2 being a close second I loved everything about the game, even if they did re-build the formula from the ground up. I loved how the combat's intensity sky-rocketed compared to the previous titles, while much of the game still gave you the creepy ambiance that was so signature to the series. The camera /aiming style they used was extremely innovative for it's time. Not to mention just how downright fun it was to go around and massacre everything that stood in your path. The bosses were epic, and fighting them was awesome. The design for them was something I feel deserves a huge amount of praise.
Even though it didn't have the same sense of vulnerability (since Leon is just such a Bad-A**), it made up for this by having you care for Ashley. Unlike most people, I loved this aspect of the game. You always know your own character can make it through the game (why would you play if they couldn't? lol), so introducing the concept of having to look out for someone else along the way helped give you that sense of urgency and vulnerability. Plus you would need to use her to solve a lot of the puzzles while also keeping her safe, which is something else about it I really enjoyed. And at most she's only in your party one third of the game, so she's not even there enough to bog down the experience if you didn't care for it. Though I will say I always dread the small section you have to play as her. Throwing lamps as a weapon was something they should have developed a little better lol.
As far as any Resident Evil goes, I thought 4 had the best overall story of any of them, as well as it being presented better than any other title. The villains were interesting, if not also unique in their own way. And again, unlike a lot of people, I absolutely loved the concept of the Las Plagas (though where they've taken it after 4 I did not care for). It was nice to see something of a "zombie with very basic intelligence" type of concept. Plus the touch they put on it when you shoot them in the head was awesome, though I won't spoil that for anyone who hasn't seen it for themselves. It was also really cool for them to throw in the 1 or 2 (depending on which version you play) side stories involving the woman in the red dress. Like in number 2, it gave you much more insight, as well as a different perspective, of the story, which is something I love to see in a game that has great story-telling.

Ok, I think I've ranted on long enough

I love the tone and tense gameplay of the originals, and just about everything after RE4 has been a great action title with the Resident Evil name slapped on it. I don't hate the new games, but they certainly aren't "Resident Evil". Ya feel? Although I did love Revelations for the 3DS, and plan on playing the sequel sometime.
