Pokémon Snap is a game played from the first person perspective. You are a photographer hired to take pictures of Pokémon on a remote island that is inhabited by all kinds of Pokémon species. I know how lame of a concept this sounds like, but it is extremely fun when actually played. You sit in a cart that slowly rolls down a preset track (though in a few places there are varying paths), and you take pictures of Pokémon along the way. Just trust me when I say it's better than it sounds. Anyway, on to the review!

Graphics 8 / 10 -- I really liked the graphics this game had to offer. All of the Pokémon look great in 3D, are well proportioned, and have great detail. The environments look beautiful and colorful, adding the perfect backdrop for all your photos. In one instance, you can see a Pidgey using Gust on a Meowth, and it looks great. You can also see a Charizard using Flamethrower, among tons of other neat things to "Snap" a photo of. There are also hidden objects to take photos of, which look fantastic as well, but more on that later.

Sound 8 / 10 -- The audio for the game is very well done. All of the Pokémon's cries are pretty spot on, and there's more than enough of them to satisfy your love for all things Pokémon. The sound effects in the game are great, one of which is you have the ability to throw apples as bait, and when it hits a Pokémon, makes a humorous "conk" noise. Another great example is when you warp in and out of each level, the effect of the transporters sounds right on the money. The background music is also very well done, adding a great ambiance to each track depending on it's setting. The sunny beach has a nice upbeat track to it, where a dark cave has an almost ominous feel to the music, though the volume is kept pretty low because it is truly intended simply for ambiance in the first place.

Addictiveness 8 / 10 -- This game is extremely fun to play, and there's plenty to come back for. In a way, it gives you the feel of wanting to capture every single Pokémon on film, the same way the original titles make you want to actually catch every Pokémon you can. Not only that, but the way the levels are set up, you will have to focus your attention on different areas each time through to make sure every single Pokémon can be spotted and captured on film. There are also varying paths for a few levels, adding even more of a reason to go back and play through each level again and again. Oh, and your photos are all scored individually and per Pokémon by Prof. Oak himself, and are rated by quite a few different criteria, adding another reason to play through again, trying to obtain the highest score possible for each individual Pokémon.

Story 4 / 10 -- As for most games, it does have a weakness, and for this one, this is it. There's not really much going on here, but at least it's something. The entire premise of the game is Prof. Oak needs a photographer to come to the island he is currently researching Pokémon at. Your job is to capture as many quality photos as you can of as many different Pokémon as you can for him to use in his research. That pretty much sums up the entire story of this game. As shallow as it is, it really doesn't take anything away from the experience, though, how much story do you really need for a game about taking pictures?

Depth 8 / 10 -- This game has plenty to offer in terms of Depth. There are well over 100 Pokémon to take photos of (if not ALL of them from Generation 1, I can't remember exactly). So hunting all of them down is quite a chore in of itself. There is also a Hidden Object / Image in each level to seek out, many of which require you to perform special actions to make it appear. If you accomplish enough of the game's content, there is also a hidden track that becomes available, offering a special guest for you to get some good photos of. The game also includes most, if not all, of the legendary Pokémon as well, which is a nice touch. It doesn't sound like much on paper, but there's plenty to keep you preoccupied for a good long while.

Difficulty 7 / 10 -- This is a hard category to put a single number on. The game itself is incredibly simple and easy to play, though trying to unlock everything it has to offer can be quite the daunting task. Honestly, the difficulty of rating the difficulty aside, that's exactly what I look for in a game in terms of difficulty (that was a mouthful lol). Some Pokémon even require you to chain events through out the entire level, all for a 2 or 3 second glimpse of them, so you need to be extremely precise with your actions and aim with the camera. There are about 6 or 7 full tracks, plus a hidden one all to conquer, which will take quite a bit of practice. Also, unlocking everything the game has to offer can be difficult considering some of the events required are hard to figure out without someone pointing you in the right direction, especially the ones that must be chained together 3+ times.

Overall 7.5 / 10 -- Overall this is an incredibly fun game the entire family can enjoy. Despite what your predisposition may be, it's worth checking out, and you may just fall in love with it. A must play for any fan of Pokémon.

Great review! It really does suck that this game never worked on Vizzed. It would have been fun to take screenshots of our pictures that we got from the game and upload them to Vizzed. Sadly, that wasn't the case, and it never will be because Nintendo did stuff. Oh well. Also what are you talking about. You need all the story to make a game about taking pictures.
