I am in complete understandment of the reason why the Entertainment industry makes more than the Education department. In saying that I fail to find a plausible reason why we should be paying our teachers so little, and football players millions a year to do something they would not have been able to do without teachers/coaches. I made this thread to see what your opinions on this issue are....

My standpoint: If we were to up the salary of teachers, we would better quality education, vice the current state of affairs. This in turn would dwindle the numbers of individuals in this world that give me migraines by not being able to spell, or conduct fluant conversations with another human being.

While I agree with how the idea I disagree with your result.

I don't think paying teachers more would increase quality. What it might actually do is increase the number of bad teachers.

I agree that teachers should get paid more for sure. But not just across the board. It should be based somewhat on performance. You can't just increase pay and expect things to improve. Throwing money at a problem doesn't fix it. But more money into the education system should make at least some difference.

I should have explained more in depth... my plan would be to have teachers paid more money in order for the Professor's and high-degree holding individuals will teach at a high school level because it would be financially plausible. It would also encourage those said teachers/professors to further their own spectrum of knowledge, in order to teach at a higher level. For instance, a 9th grade teacher would need atleast an associates to teach, while a 12th grade teacher would need a more specific degree pertaining to the subject he will be conveying. Im trying as best i can to get this out of my brain as clearly as possible please ask any questions or give any input. If all goes well ill be writing a letter to my congressman with this in mind.

okay, that does make more sense.... require more education... but pay better for that higher education. I do like that.

Canada has much higher requirements to be a teacher now. I think we require a 2 or 4 year degree and then 2 more years for an education degree that's all about learning how to teach effectively. So 4-6 years for a 30-40k per year job starting out. Not great.

You could get a 4 year degree and walk into a job in the oil patch and earn twice that starting out.

I agree that teachers should be paid more based off their performance but I do not think a higher grade level teacher should get paid more than say a first grade teacher. Knowledge about subjects is only half of it. If the teacher isn't able to connect with the students they're not going to be able to teach them that well. Someone who can teach a 11th grade class may not be as succesful teaching a 1st grade class.

I really don't understand why porfessional sports players get payed millions. Sure they may be good at entertaining us (well not me personally) but does that really entitle them to that much money?

Well, that is actually a product of supply and demand.

There are very few athletes that can play at that level and even fewer that can dominate a sport. There are only a few hundred members of the national leagues (NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB). and each team wants to win and slowly salaries have gone up in order to pay for the best player to come play for "your" team. Demand for the best is high, supply is low. This results in high prices (price being salary).

But you also need to remember that there are very few players that actually make millions. The average player that plays in any of those leagues doesn't have a 25 million dollar contract for 2 years of playing or anything like that. Many players make 500,000 a year if they are lucky and only make that for a couple years. Not saying that 500k isn't great, but that doesn't mean they can retire.

But the pay difference is ridiculous. But we as a society have glorified celebrities and athletes so much that they can make as much as they do and many of us don't really think about it anymore.

Well thats exactly why i brought this up... because we dont think about these small inate things... but i do

Its really detrimental, and i understand why other countries hate us.... we are blinded by our own ignorance....

I beleive this idea would be great if only the right touch were put into it, lets not forget that the USA has not been around that long compared to other nations that notice our futility in situations such as this... I think society needs to take a breather and see this thing for what it really is
