After 9 years, I may have found an antidepressant that helps me

In around the beginning of 2007 I was diagnosed with depression and started trying different meds and counselors and nothing ever made any difference. I've felt terrible for pretty much 9 or 10 straight years and I was giving up hope because I had tried essentially every type of anti-depressant on the market and nothing helped.
Well, I finally decided to try an MAOI (Nardil, specifically) in spite of the dietary restrictions (can't eat cheese or much bacon, sausage, certain common medicines, and other stuff). It didn't seem to work either, but I recently increased the dose to 45mg/day and, maybe it's a coincidence, but I think I'm starting to notice an effect. This past week, my head has been clearer almost every day and I'm more motivated and not having as many negative thoughts. I hardly ever have days like this normally, but it's been over a week in a row now. I'm getting pretty hyped that I might have finally found something that helps. I still have some anxiety, but I'll deal with that later. And... also there seems to be a side effect with Nardil for me where I have interrupted Anyway, I'm probably oversharing by posting all this personal stuff to the internet, but I just wanted to share since I'm excited about it. Disclaimer: Just because this med works for me, doesn't mean it will for you. You're probably better off trying things without the dietary restrictions and side effects first. Or just good diet and exercise and counseling. Davideo7 : heh, yeah, most people I've told have said that they had no idea. I can hide it pretty well for the most part, but I would always feel like my chest was heavy, my mind was muddled, I was tired, and that nothing mattered or was worth doing. I didn't really have much emotion at all (well, except anger and anxiety). Since I didn't enjoy anything, I had no motivation to do the unpleasant things in life, like working, or even eating, shaving, and showering (though I did do those anyway). That lack of motivation and meaning then tended to spiral down into thoughts of suicide (I even remember making a mental note one time to let you know if I had to drop out of the Bomberman tournament due to suicide). Though I never actually made an attempt, I could see the logic in it and was just too afraid to do it.
As for "confident in what I do"... I guess I am for a few things, but I don't really know what it is that I do. I've been essentially unemployed since college and only do odd jobs here and there (teaching Japanese lessons once a week, small amounts of YouTube ad revenue, a couple of translation commissions ever... I took jobs as a substitute teacher's aide and transcr But, anyway, I've been feeling way better since the past week and haven't had any of those negative thoughts. After E3 I won't have any excuse not to find an actual job... but I'm still anxious about that. legacyme3 : Aw, that sucks. How many have you tried? I have heard that from a lot of people though. MuseFanBoy : It does have an effect, but it's probably not a huge effect. I don't know a lot of details about it, but I assume that generally healthy eating keeps your mind healthy along with your body, and vice versa for unhealthy eating. Probably you have to have a consistently unhealthy diet for it to have a noticeably negative effect. As for "confident in what I do"... Linkums : I think depression is a common side effect for those who use the internet often. I've noticed that a good portion of the users of this site struggle from some sort of depression. I myself have struggled with it in the past (and a little recently as well only because I'm at risk of losing my house) but I've always found that the following things (in no order) are great cures for overcoming it:
1. Projects: Take on projects that excite you. If you have something to look forward to and something that makes you happy, it'll give you a reason to keep living. 2. Hobbies: Take on hobbies. The more occupied your time is, the less likely you are to think about the things that make you depressed. 3. Friends and Family: Surround yourself with friends. Whether it be real life friends or online friends, it's healthy to have some sort of social life and to have people around you that you care about and that care about you as well. 4. Faith: A strong faith in God will greatly help. I know you already believe in God so the next step might be to pick up your Bible once in a while (or use the one on Vizzed). There are also some good christian programs that you can watch that are also uplifting. 5. Generosity: Give to others or do good for others. Doing selfless acts of kindness not only brings a smile to the faces of those affected but it'll also brighten up your own life as well. 6. Get off the Computer: Getting outside or just not spending too much time on the computer is both healthy physically and mentally. legacyme3 : I think I've heard that depression is less noticeable among men. For example, Robin Williams appeared to be one of the funniest and happiest guys in the world. I'm happy for you. I can relate to the feeling of finally getting through a seemingly endless decline.
I wanted to try and get off the pills myself so I gave exercise a try. All that did was remind me of what a sloth I am :p. Davideo7 : I don't doubt that you're right about being on the computer so much having something to do with it. I do try break it up by taking walks and playing disc golf, but it's still not much in comparison.
Everything you mentioned is definitely good advice. - I'm lucky to have supportive and [mostly] positive friends and family around. I live at home, so I'm around my family at least, and I hang out with friends at least once a week at a small Bible study, so that's nice. - Faith; I've got that and do go to church and Bible study weekly, but doing more would always be good. When I'm feeling particularly bad, I end up getting bitter at God (though in retrospect, that doesn't make sense) and not caring about what he wants, only serving him out of obligation and because he's the winning side. I would resent the fact that he gave me life in the first place. But once again, that's just my negative thinking which makes sense at the time and then doesn't totally add up now that I'm feeling a bit better. -Generosity; I'm kind of bad at this. People might think I'm generous, but I honestly don't really like to be. Once again, I feel like I'm only generous out of obligation because I know I'm supposed to be. Maybe I'm just not giving myself enough credit though. -Hobbies & Projects were/are the hardest thing and the thing I wanted most. It felt like my main issue was not having anything I cared about or felt was meaningful. I didn't/don't enjoy anything or know what I would enjoy, so I don't really know what hobbies or projects I should start. I guess my one project was the blog/youtube/twitch presence, but there's no real end goal for that and it also doesn't help with your other advice of getting off of the computer more. And even that hobby/project isn't overly fun or motivating. I feel like I shouldn't spend time on things if it's not making me money or working toward me being self-sufficient, so then I just don't do anything at all. >.< Not that amassing money motivates me either; it's more about merely achieving self-sufficiency so I don't have the guilt of mooching off my parents (but I was still depressed in college and high school when I didn't feel an obligation to be self-sufficient, so that's not entirely my problem either). Aaaanyway, sorry for filling up your busy inbox with another long reply and thanks for your reply in the first place. Linkums : I sometimes go days without leaving the house due to working on the site as much as I do and sometimes when the stress and anxiety builds up, just going outside on a nice day helps put me into a positive mood.
It's great that you have people around you, especially real life people. Sometimes only having online people in your life makes you start to lose a sense of reality (not that there's anything wrong with having online friends). It's great to hear that you attend church and Bible study weekly. Making adjustments to your outlook will definitely help though. When you made that translation guide for me for Itadaki Street, that was sorta an act of generosity because you didn't charge me much when you could have charged me so much more considering how much people tend to charge for Japanese to English translations of things. So yeah, give yourself a little more credit. I understand not having the time for hobbies or projects. It was more of a suggestion if you had too much free time. Some people have too much of it.
