OVERVIEW

I've always been strictly a console gamer most of the time but ever once in a while I will find a computer game that really catches my eye such as this game, Evoland 2 and another unrelated game called Party Hard. I have never played the first Evoland yet so I can't make a complete comparison to Evoland 2 except I heard that it was a short game. As for Evoland 2, the game takes you through four periods of time where you journey between the Magi era (sometime pre-950), past (950), present (999) and future (1160) as you go around talking to various foes, completing various tasks, and since this is a parody filled game, a lot of references to other videogames throughout your conquest.

I have amped up the grading scale just for this game alone so far but there will be games in the future I will do the same since an A+ is too low of a grade to give such a great game. Let's start with the graphics, shall we? Each time period is met by graphics that fit the bill and you will notice that they are all based on a time in the life of Nintendo's gaming history. Magi era where the game starts uses Gameboy's spinach green graphics to represent the beginning of time. Next there is the past graphics which has everything based off of NES's 8-bit style graphics. From there, we got the present where the story takes off and uses the SNES's 16-bit style graphics. Finally, there is the future which has everything in 3D and I am going to say that everything is based more on Nintendo 64 graphics but it might also represent Gamecube and Wii graphics too. All of the elements of the game changes with the time period which I definitely believe is cool as everything has been upgraded or downgraded to look just like they would have during it's time period. That includes characters, enemies, bushes, houses, and maps. When you travel to a different time period, you should try to visit places you had been to in another time period to see how much things had changed from then. Once of my favorite places to check out was WokDonalds. It was not much a big deal but I always got curious to what it looked like in the past present and future. The Magi era, when you go back there, does not have any familiar spots. As you can pretty much see, it was the land before time so to speak as everything was all islands.

MUSIC - A+

The music was very exciting, it changed along with each important situation so it worked also as an audible cue for what you were getting yourself into and it also went through various degrees of genres from being extremely calm to getting you hyped up. The soundtrack is just that awesome and it also adjusts with the time period so it sounds just like a Gameboy, NES, SNES or 3D game when you are there. The only thing that does not change is the boss music which I am glad was kept the same so the composer did not have to try so hard.

GAMEPLAY - SSS

The gameplay is the very best part of the game. Aside from being a parody of the Legend of Zelda and a bit of the Secret of Mana, you come across a brash of varying genres and play styles. Let me get you up to speed on part of the story. You are a guy named G which you find out is short for Giro. You go through a tutorial in the Magi era then end up in the present with a loss of memory and wake up in a bed with a girl named Fina standing next to you. Her father was the one who found you in the forest. As you go around looking for clues to who you are, Fina decides to name you (Kuro by default). Ya'll find a monolith that takes you to the past and eventually meet a demon named Menos who you initially fight but ends up befriending you and joining your party. After a brief present to the future, you return to the present and that is where you obtain your fourth character, Velvet. You have your sword to cut down foes and Fina will assist you with wind-based sweeping attacks. Kuro will come from the sky and assist you with earthquake attacks. Velvet will assist you with ice attacks. While in the future, you get to meet the prophet who you will fight in a Street Fighter style scenario where you punch, kick and do special moves. If you played Street Fighter games before then you know how to pull them off already. You will also see parodies of Megaman when you face one of the Demon trio in the present which actually includes Menos' grown up son. I haven't beaten the game but the final boss is Menos and Velvet's daughter, Ceres whom you've met several times during the story but face her at the end of time.

REPLAYABILTY - S

There are several things to explore in this game. You can collect stars which are hidden and not so hidden around the game. Later on down the line you can collect cards to battle other card players and it is as equally addictive as the main game itself. One thing to note about beating the game, there is a screen that shows the percentage of the game you completed. One good reason to play this game again and again is to see if you can find all the references this game has to offer. Some make reference to Link from the Legend of Zelda series. One farmer asks if you want to help round up chickens then he changes his mind because his chickens were traumatized by a green clad boy who went around slashing them and sometimes using them to fly around. Other stuff you see makes reference to Metal Gear where you use a box to hid and the enemy can't see you within the shadows of the dungeon.

OVERALL - SS

Like I have mentioned, an A+ would have been to low of a score to rate this good game so I decided to raise the bar to include S's. Because this game falls under parody rules, it was legal for the company who made this game to sell this game on steam thus you will see characters from other games during the credits. If you are not a Steam player but want to make an exception, this is the game to play. No diggity, no doubt.
