http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/wildfire-destroys-homes-in-fort-mcmurray-entire-city-evacuated-1.2885156

So, a wildfire in northern Alberta has spread quickly into the city of Ft. McMurray. The city has about 30,000 people in it and the entire city is under mandatory evacuation.

I read somewhere that the fire crews in charge of fighting the fire had to give up trying to keep it out of the city because it was spreading faster than they could stay ahead to fight it.

Crazy stuff happening up there. No casualties yet but multiple buildings have been destroyed. No way of knowing until the fire burns out.

I hope they can contain it soon. They do not need the wildfires like California gets with alarming regularity.

Absolute insanity to hear about. Having family that have spent most of their lives in that city, and the social media attention it's getting, it's all around me.

I really hope they get everybody out of there fast. One ditrict alone has already faced 80% loss of everything. Families are being taken from their homes without even time to grab their possessions. Completely crazy to imagine something that vicious ripping through a family members hometown or even considering it being a reality in my area.

You usually don't hear about fires in Canada that much, but this one sounds like a big one. Last I heard, 60,000 people had to get out as the fire has doubled in size. And I heard that they had to get firefighters from all over Canada to try and contain this fire. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the people that are victims of this horrible disaster.

Oh gosh...I hope that everybody will be safely away from this. That is horriffic. I never hear much about wildfires in Canada. This isn't as regular as California right? (I swear, in the summer, that whole place just bursts into flames until summer's over)

I'll keep this place in my prayers. That is truly tragic. I hope that all these people have somewhere else to go...

LunarDarkness2 : it is nowhere near me. I'm in the southern part of the province and the fire is in the northern part.

Updated number, the entire city has now been evacuated. I had the optional evacuation number of around 30,000 but the city is more like 80 or 90 thousand people. A good portion of the city is destroyed with lots of other places suffering moderate amounts of damage. Hard to know until things are made safe enough for people to inspect the city and start figuring out what the damage is like now. Estimates are that at least 1,600 buildings have been destroyed so far and there might be even more than that. There is no rain in the forecast and temperatures are going to be around 30C which is over 80F. Not good conditions to get this under control at all.

I was watching the news last night, and a home video was sent in of the fire burning as people were driving through it. You could hear a woman crying watching what I think was her property burn... it was really emotional.

I am amazed however at how well Canada as come together. Red Cross reported 11M in donations in just 2 days(!!!), and supplies are being shipped out in huge amounts as well. Mexico has also sent up firefighters, and I believe the US Army is also helping. I hope we get this under control soon, but it's amazing to see communities all over coming together.

plasticinsanity : it wouldn't have been needed if our "wonderful" Premier hadn't cut the provincial firefighting budget by 80% but what do I know? I'm just a peon.

Honestly from what I've heard it has taken 2-3 times longer to get the personnel into place because the budget was reduced and those people weren't under contract anymore with the province. The same people are now getting paid to help out but instead of immediately moving into place they had to wait for word from the government. It is illegal to fight fires (I think via plane or helicopter) without approval from the government first. Therefore, wasted time waiting for the right paperwork and bureaucracy to be dealt with first in order to get these things in place. While waiting, a couple thousand buildings have burned to the ground and 80-100 thousand people have been evacuated from the city and surrounding areas.

For some reason, I thought I posted here, but now I realize I hadn't.

I've been following this on the news each night when I get home. It's very strange hearing about this kind of thing happening in Canada. Usually it's western U.S. States like California that get wildfires. Anyways, I hope they'll somehow be able to get that wildfire under control soon.

So, it's been around two weeks since I heard about this fire. Did it finally die down? I would look it up myself but I'm kind of lazy.

What is happening in North East Alberta is very sad and tragic. That area has been in a major drought this year. Last I heard about the fire was Canada was concerned it is going to spread into Saskatchewan which is the province next too Alberta. Both provinces have been very dry.

The area did have a chance of rain this week so I hope that helped firefighters. As a Christian continued prayers. I also have friends in Saskatchewan and they are nervous about this blaze. Due to it being so dry they are concerned about new fires starting up

LunarDarkness2 : yes, it is still going.... and the leader of the country is turning down help from other countries to fight this fire.

There are also other fires in other parts of Alberta going on right now but those are under control right now.

It is kind of maddening to know that countries are OFFERING help and it is getting turned down.

Yeah Russia, Israel, Germany, Italy, France, Britain, Mexico and the USA have offered to send fire fighters, planes to drop water, and other resources to fight the fire. But Trudeau (Canada's new Leader) constantly refuses their help. I don't know why he is refusing their help. Alberta and Saskatchewan were getting rainfall today. But they were also getting storms so people are concerned about lightning starting new fires.

A snip of the domestic policy section of Justin Trudeau's Wikipedia article:

"Deficit

During the election, the Liberal Party promised to run a deficit of around $10 billion per year, but due to the lower oil price, Trudeau's Minister of Finance, Bill Morneau, announced in his first budget in March 2016 that the government would have a $29 billion deficit in 2016 and 2017."

Conspiracy theory time.

He had the oil sand set fire to raise oil prices, and now refuses to accept outside help to stop it.

I'm being silly, of course, but the idea does provoke thought. I hope it fizzles out pretty soon. Pretty messed up that they had to evacuate so many people...

I caught this in the news reports I get on my notebook. Quite sad really especially as I am such a close neighbor to Canada and hold an interest in possibly having a home there...though I had tentatively planned to be more in the Ontario region. It will take a lot to rebuild and curious as to how that fire got raging in the first place.

These unfortunate events were another good occasion to see the full inhumaneness of too many environmentalists. Many of them were DROOLING over the catastrophe, saying that it's another sign of globalwarmingclimatechangedisruption. And yet, a 2012 report said that northern Alberta was at risk of wildfires because the pine trees were mature and therefore prone to catch fire.
