Millennials sucks. That's what quite a few Baby Boomers and Gen X people think. We are almost constantly blamed for the putrid state of affairs we must deal with daily. We are thought of as lazy, hostile, selfish, arrogant, and a liability. Its a sad reality we must live in. We are hated on constantly without any sympathy or remorse. As a result, the self-esteem of many fellow millennials might have been lowered due to the fact how we have a particular inability to get permanently employed. It's truly a single minded viewpoint and I'd like to address this problem in a different light.

Do you hate your Millennial status? Why or why not? I'd like to hear your opinions. I'm truly grateful for your cooperation.

No, what I hate is all this "my generation sucks" crap that you'll find on pretty much any popular music video from the 80s or 90s on youtube. It's obvious people just say that because they want to feel special and they only look at what the mainstream trends are today.

The thing with millenials being hated on though is that it's nothing new. The most recent generation always has and likely always will be blamed for many of the problems going on in society. Because they're the most noticeable and it's just easier to blame all problems on something else. Not to mention nostalgia plays a part in all of this as well. Many people remember things to be better than they actually were. Even if you were to agree, the people that actively do that though seem to forget we're largely a result of how those that preceeded us raised us. In other words they're really equally blaming themselves.

In the same way one day the group that succeeds us is the one that will have all the focus on them and be hated on by many of us millenials. I'd say it's human nature so I don't really feel too bothered by it.

I have to agree wholeheartedly with Zlingx on this one.  Every generation thinks the next generation is making society go to hell in a handbasket.  I read a great article one complaining about how all these teens with their magazines and their telephones were going to ruin the world.  In fact, telephones were initially just a business tool and telephone companies didn't want to be associated with idle jibber jabber.  Today, people complain about teens, smart phones, and how much jibber jabber goes on in our even more connected world.  Nothing has changed.

I was born in 1987, so I'm one of the standard bearers of the beginning of the millennial wave. I think we're doing just fine.  I love being part of the first generation that can ubiquitously manipulate the internet and electronics for betterment of our world and society.  Think of all the good we've been able to accomplish with a more interconnected world.  I love being a part of a generation so informed by scientific progress. We know smoking can kill us, so we don't smoke as much as previous generations. We know binge drinking isn't good, so we don't drink as much. We know much more about our environment and do a much better job of taking care of it. Sure, we can't all drive stick or write in cursive, but we're redefining transportation and communications.  We're more likely to use public transportation and go paperless.  We're far more likely to have graduated high school and far more likely to have participated in every other level of education.  I love being part of that.

Yes, I see the original post's point about the difficulty in getting a job, but I know our generation will find it's own way with a solution to that problem, too.  We're constantly coming up with new industries and new services.  As soon as we stop latching on to the old and embrace the new, we'll have it figured out.

So don't let your self-esteem dip.  You're part of what will make our world ours.

It wasn't that my self-esteem was dipping, I was just asking this question out of curiosity. Even so, I appreciate the compliment. Thanks.

As someone that was born in 1999(end of the "millennial" era), all of those characteristics that you described are completely accurate for the large majority of millennials. I want to go back to the Reagan era.

I can see why most people look at the Millennial as the stupid ones, and I don't necessarily HATE being one (because I get to grow up with all this awesome tech :3) but what I do hate is being lumped with the Millennials that are all stupid and rude and whatnot. Sometimes it seems like people will judge me without getting to know me and not change their view no matter what I do. Not every Millennial is like that, and not everyone before the Millennials are all great and honest and the like. And I suppose that the people after the Millennials will be absolutely hated as well, because idk nostalgia and stuff.

Ultrajeff :

Yeah, I am with you on this one. No matter what the moment you get into the workforce, patience runs thin and because you're not 30 + years of age, your viewed as part of the problem- though the last generation was the problem if you think about it. I don't blame today's society for the issues, I blame every generation, and it's our job to get put back on the path. Don't listen to people who put you down because of that. Find people who will actually lift you up because of what you can be and should be.

The next generation is always the parent's fault. . . and the school system- which I do not support in the least, so it's funny how the parent's own product will end up with all the blame. Screw the arrogance of the last generation. If you ask me, the 70s 80s, and 90s seem way worse morally to me. Though today we have transgender and gays like nobody's business.

Zlinqx :

Just echoing what you've said. You know I used to blame this generation until I realized how stupid that was when the parents control so much, and voted for the government that controls their kids. It really is silly.

I"m in between ages of Millenials and Generation-Xers.  I was born in '81, so I don't really fall into either category.

The real question is: "What are you doing to change the negative view of Millenials?"  I'd be curious to hear what kind of things kids are doing nowadays to change the perspective that these new kids are lazy, selfish, unable to tie their own shoes, and can't do anything with their mom or dad leaning in and helping.  We hear the stats that most people in their 20s live at home whereas when I was in high school in the 90s, everyone couldn't wait to leave and get out on their own.

I don't hate Millenials.  And a few other people mentioned that the newest generation is always the crappy one.  That's just how things are.  We naturally think our group had it harder, we're better, whatever.

I don't hate Millenials, I just hope they step up and act responsibly as they continue their own life paths.

If you aren't either, what does that make you? I'd really like to know? Also, I would change the negativity by getting a job, working my way up the social ladder, doing something unique and innovative, and showing that a millennial got this far.

My issue with the current generation is how easily they are hurt (emotionally) and how self centered they are.
We don't need to change words, give out participation medals, and we don't need to see selfies of you every 15 minutes and see what you are currently eating...

I would agree with Vanelan. And I agree that my generation,Generation X,was among the worst. We were d-bags and cared about little, but at least we were not that self absorbed. We just need a push back to toughening kids up and teaching them to not be whiny little sissies every time they do not get their way.

I think "d-bag" is a bit of a stretch. Our generation was certainly jaded and cared little to nothing about anything.

Honestly, I don't even know what generation I "belong to" because it doesn't really matter....  The issue with both the group being bashed and the group doing the bashing is narrow mindedness. Disclaimer: I'm not a "snowflake", but what I hate more than anything is the stripping of individuality. That may sound hypocritical of someone who frequently applies very broad labels to large amounts of people, but I'm working on it. In short, my whole point is that whether or not it bothers you that your generation is dumped on or that you hate your generation is dependant upon the fact that you even identify with said group. I'm me. Not gen whatever, not anything else. Not even the "individuals" or the "rebels", "free thinkers" or "free spirits" are what they claim to be because they've turned it into a label.

Lol no. Since we have existed, almost everything bad in the world has gone down (Most crimes, teen pregency etc,) kids tend to be better behaved then say, the early 90s and some of these "statictics" that the older generations like to put on us are either false or directly caused by them. Generational hate has been around since the 400's BC, I really don't get it.

Nice analysis. But I'm quite bothered. I just wish we would be treated fairly. No hard feelings, sir.

Nah, it doesn't bother me much. Although I was born in 1998, so neither group accepts me. The only gripe I have with this "generation" is that everybody is WAY too sensitive. Although in all reality, the blame for this kind of falls on their parents being so lazy and selfish that they never taught them otherwise.

As the usual cycle is repeating itself, the older generation has a ton of nostalgia for their childhood, and over romanticizes their own youth. And because of this, they hate and blame all the world's problems on the newer and younger generation. It's not fair, but that is humanity for ya.

tgags123 : This is you.

I have been told I am part of the Google generation since I was born the year google was founded 1998. Anyway I don't hate being apart of it I can at least understand technology better than some of the older generations. Although with the amount of people getting offended for the silliest things is starting to annoy me more and more. Whats worse is people getting offended for other people.

I really shouldn't bother posting in this thread but quite frankly I don't even care. It has no real relevance to me at all nor will it ultimately decide my fate.

So no, I'd say it's a pretty safe assumption that I do not hate it.
