my family and I have owned cats for 45 years altogether we have had about 12 cats most of them started off as strays except our oldest which was a seal point Siamese that we had for 19 years,we never had anymore than 2 at a time and always made sure they were fixed, currently we have 2 cats a male black and brown tabby that is 11 years old we adopted him 10 years ago from our local human society and the second one is a 9 year old female tortoiseshell who was abandoned after her previous owner moved away and left her behind.throughout all these years we never had any that have lost any teeth until last year when our youngest cat had to go to the vets to have her teeth checked, when they checked her teeth they discovered that most of them were rotten and would have to be removed,we took her back a second time so she could have dental surgery before the surgery they did blood work on her and discovered that everything was normal, she made a full recovery but only has 4 of her teeth left now our other cat has had to go through the same procedure and also has only 4 of his teeth left he just had his surgery yesterday and is currently recovering at home, this is actually the first time I heard of any cats losing their teeth, while neither one of them have any kind of gum disease we were told that the reason why this happened was because or tartar buildup on their teeth,my cousin even told me that it was caused by moist food and that it apparently rots their teeth but all our other cats were always fed both moist and dry food and never lost any teeth so I believe that it was probable caused by tartar buildup  apparently the same thing happens to other people,s pets because we were told by our vet that they do dental surgeries every MONDAY and FRIDAY and because they are currently booked up we had to bring our cat in yesterday now we are hoping that like our first cat that he makes a full recovery

no 8120 :   I hate to say this, but there is a reason why 4-5 dentists suggest a certain toothpaste.  Consider this if you will, and I hope that I do not ruin anything you believe to be true, but why would anyone in their field of practice suggest something that would ruin their careers.  If there was a cure for cancer, we would have no need for some doctors.  If they told us we could re grow our teeth by NOT using their sugar laden toothpaste, we would have no use for the dentist.  The list is enormous for what we don't actually need, and the list for the people that steal our money is even greater.  Think about that, and how "9-10" doctors recommend what they do...they do it for a reason, and it's not to help you

I've heard of it happening, but none of the cats I had/have experienced it.
I'm not a vet, but my oldest cat (18) exclusively ate wet food and never had problems with her teeth.... so I dunno if, with my experience, I would say that wet food is the problem...

I work at the UF Vet Hospital (which also has a primary care/dental service), but I'm not a vet, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Honestly, it's probably not the fault of wet food specifically. Generally, problems like this arise when cats aren't taking care of themselves well (very odd for cats), they haven't been to a vet in a very long time (most vets will at least notice any potential teeth issues during a normal exam when they check the gums), or if they're fed an odd diet (such as eating a lot of 'people food'. Cats are healthiest when they're fed food formulated for them, so using cat food is definitely the best way to go. There is a lot of wet food formulated for cats, so I wouldn't be concerned about feeding your pets wet food. We feed all our animals wet food on occasion, and don't have problems with any of their teeth (one dog has bad breath, but that's due to eating grass and leaves and such outside).

Basically, as long as they're getting to the vet annually (at least) for checkups, eating cat food, and are otherwise healthy, there's no real reason for their teeth to be rotting to the point of needing to be removed. If something else is going on, such as some sort of dental disease or whatnot, then your vet should let you know that when you go in for your checkup.

I have had a few cats. Although I can't say I've ever had losing teeth be an issue...

Are there cat dental treats? Or some kind of gum medicine? I hope your cat will be alright.
