Pokemon HeartGold Important Battles stratagy guide

Section 1: Gyms

Gym 1- Violet City Gym

In the violet city gym you will have to battle the gym leader of Flying Type Pokemon, Falkner.

Falkner has the following pokemon with these moves:
Pidgey Level 9:
Knows Tackle and Sand Attack. Has the ability Keen Eye, isn't holding an item.
Pidgeotto Level 13:
Knows Tackle, Roost, and Gust. Has the ability Keen Eye, isn't holding an item.

At this point in the game, you will have your starter Pokemon along with a few other wild
pokemon which include Pidgey, Rattata, Sentret, and Hoothoot. Of these Pokemon, your best bet
at victory would be a trained starter pokemon, a trained Rattata or a trained Sentret. I would
recommend against using Pidgey or Hoothoot due to the fact that they are flying type Pokemon,
and their moves, unless you use tackle, would have very little hit power against Falkner's
Pokemon during your battle. I would recommend you keep the Pokemon on your team just in case,
but don't go into battle primed to use them to get you to victory.

All Pokemon up to level 20 will obey you

Gym 2- Azalea Town Gym
In the Azalea Town Gym you will have to battle bug type trainer Bugsy.

Bugsy has the following Pokemon with moves:
Scyther level 17:
Knows Quick Attack, Leer, U-Turn, and Focus Energy. Ability is technician and holds a sitrus
berry.
Kakuna level 15:
Knows Poison sting. Ability is Shed Skin and holds no item.
Metapod level 15:
Knows Tackle. Ability is Shed Skin and holds no item.

This is when your flying Pokemon that you couldn't use in the prvious Gym come in handy.
Flying type Pokemon have much strengh against Bug type Pokemon. However, Scyther is also
flying type, so the use of your starter Pokemon or again of Rattata, or hopefully Raticate if
you have already leveled it up to level 20. The use of flying type pokemon agianst scyther is
pretty much useless and not recommended.

Pokemon up to level 30 will obey.

Gym 3- Goldenrod City Gym
In the Goldenrod City Gym you will have to battle gym leader Whitney and her Normal type
Pokemon.

Whitney has the following pokemon with moves:
Clefairy level 17:
Knows DoubleSlap, Mimic, Encore, and Metronome. Ability is cute charm and it holds no item.
Miltank level 19:
Knows Rollout, Attact, Stomp, and Milk drink. Ability is scrappy and item is lum berry.
Know fighting moves. That is all I can say. Fighting moves, from any pokemon, will help a ton
as normal types are dead against fighting types. You have to hit hard at the Gym, or you'll
flaunder. The Miltank is going to be one of the hardest battles of the game, hit it hard.
Don't try and lower its stats, just hit hit hit and you'll be good.

Rewards:
Plain Badge
TM45 and use of HM04

Gym 4- Eccruteak Town Gym
In the Ecruteak Town Gym you'll be battling Gym leader Morty and his Ghost type team.

Morty has the following pokemon with moves:
Gastly level 21:
Knows Lick, Spite, Mean Look, and Curse. Ability Levitate and holds no item.
Haunter level 21:
Knows Hynosis, dream eater, curse, and nightmare. Ability Levitate and holds no item.
Gengar level 25:
Knows Hypnosis, Shadow ball, mean look, and sucker punch. Ability Levitate and holds sitrus
berry.
Haunter level 23:
Knows Curse, mean look, sucker punch, and night shade. Ability levitate and holds no item.

There is really no trick to actually beating Morty in his own gym, you just have to bring
Pokemon that don't use normal or psychic moves, and you'll easily be able to beat him. Using
ghost type pokemon will work, except they'll be very weak to his attacks to. Use of a
different pokemon that knows a Ghost type move is best. And bring potions that will wake you
up, you will need them when going against Morty.

Pokemon up to level 50 will obey you

Gym 5- Cianwood City Gym
In the Cianwood City Gym you will have to beat leader Chuck and his Fighting type Pokemon.

Chuck has the following pokemon with moves:
Primeape level 29:
Knows Leer, Double Team, Focus Punch, and Rock slide. Ability is Vital Spirit and holds no
item.
Poliwrath level 31:
Knows Hypnosis, Surf, Focus Punch, and Body Slam. Ability is Water Absorb and holds sitrus
berry.

Chuck isn't a hard gym leader if you use those Psychic types that you were holding back from
the last Gym. A Kadabra (or even Alakazam) or a Hypno would be your best shot at beating Chuck
in his gym. Their Psychic type moves are very Powerful against fighting types, and would be
able to knock out Chuck's fighting types easily.

Rewards:

TM01 and use of HM02

Gym 6- Olivine City Gym
In the Olivine City gym you will have to face leader Jasmine and her Steel type Pokemon.

Jasmine has the following Pokemon with moves:
Magnemite level 30:
Knows Thunderbolt, Supersonic, Sonic Boom, and Thunderwave. Ability magnet pull and holds no
item.
Magnemite level 30:
Knows Thunderbolt, Supersonic, Sonic Boom, and Thunderwave. Ability Sturdy and holds no item.
Steelix level 35:
Knows Screech, Sandstorm, Rock Throw, and Iron Tail. Ability Sturdy and hold sitrus berry.

Jasmine is a hard gym leader, not because of just the Steelix, but because of the Magnemites.
All I can say for the two magnemites is use a fire type Pokemon or fire type move. This is
what will be able to knock them out in 1 or 2 hits and will limit their ablilities to either
deal a lot of damage or paralyze all of your Pokemon. For the Steelix, you just have to beat
it down with water type moves or moves that deal normal damage. Nothing is super affective
against the Steelix due to its ground type abilities, so using normal attacks and wearing it
down is your best approach to it.

Rewards:

All Pokemon up to level 70 will obey you

Gym 7- Mahogany Town Gym
In the Mahogany Town Gym you will be facing gym leader Pryce who speicilizes in Ice (or
water).

Pryce has the following pokemon will moves:
Seel level 30:
Knows Snore, Hail, Icy Wind, and Rest. Ability is Thick Fat and holds no item.
Dewgong level 32:
Knows Sleep Talk, Ice Shard, Aurora Beam, and Rest. Ability thick fat and holds no item.
Piloswine level 34:

Knows Hail, Ice Fang, Mud Bomb, and BLizzard. Ability snow cloak and holds sitrus berry.
Beating Pryce in his gym battle is much easier than it may seem. Fighting and rock type moves,
one of each, will get the job done. They are super effective against all of his Pokemon, or at
least 1.25x effective, and will be an easy knock out punch against Pryce.

Rewards:
Glacier Badge
TM07 and use of HM05

Gym 8- Blackthorn City Gym
The leader of Blackthron City Gym is Clair with her Dragon type Pokemon.

Clair has the following Pokemon and moves:
Gyarados level 38:
Knows Twister, Dragon Rage, Bite, and Dragon Pulse. Ability is Intimidate and holds no item.
Dragonair leel 38:
Knows Thunder wave, Fire Blast, Slam, and Dragon Pulse. Ability is Shed SKin and holds no
item.
Dragonair leel 38:
Knows Thunder wave, Aqua Tail, Slam, and Dragon Pulse. Ability is Shed SKin and holds no item.
Kingdra level 41:
Knows Smoke Screen, Hydro Pump, Hyper Beam, and Dragon Pulse. Has ability Sniper and holds a
sitrus Berry.

Defeating Clair isn't easy at all. The best tip I can give is not to use any dragon type
Pokemon, only dragon type moves. Because all of her Pokemon know Dragon Pulse, any dragon type
Pokemon you bring in will be done with just one hit from her Pokemon.

Section 2, Elite 4 battles:
Battle 1-
Your first battle in the Elite 4 will be against WIll, a psychic type user.

Will has the following Pokemon and moves:
Xatu level 40:
Knows U-Turn, Me First, Psychic, and confuse Ray. Ability is Synchronize and holds no item.
Jynx level 41:
Phows Psychic, Lovely Kiss, Ice Punch, and double slap. Ability is Oblivious and holds no item.
Slowbrow level 41:
Knows Curse, Amnesia, Water Pulse, and Psychic. Ability is own tempo and holds no item.
Exeggutor level 41:
Knows Reflect, PSychic, egg bomb, and hypnosis. Ability is Chlorophyll and holds no item.
Xatu level 42:
Knows Psychic, confuse ray, Ominous wind, and Aerial Ace. Ability is early bird and holds sitrus berry.
To beat will is simple, use electric type moves to eliminate Xatu and slowbrow. After that use Fire moves such as flamethrowing to eliminate Jynx and exeggutor.

Battle 2-
Your second battle in the Elite 4 will be against Koga, a poison type user.

Koga has the following Pokemon and moves:
Ariadoes level 40:
Knows Spider web, Poison Jab, giga drain, and Baton Pass. Ability is insomnia and no item is held.
Forretress level 43:
Knows Swift, Protect, explosion, and toxic spikes. Ability is sturdy and holds no item.
Muk level 42:
Knows Minimize, Gunk Shot, screech, and toxic. Ability is sticky hold and held item is black sludge.
Venomoth level 41:
Knows Toxic, Super sonic, Psychic, and Gust. Ability is SHield Dust and no item is held.
Crobat level 44:
Knows double team, wing attack, quick attack, and poison fang. Ability is inner focus and held item is sitrus berry.
The best part about there being a poison type gym leader is that a strong psychic type pokemon, such as Alakazam, can easily win the battle in quick fassion. Make sure to take advantage of these psychic types to easily win.

Battle 3-
Your third battle in the Elite Four will be against Bruno, who happens to be a fighting type user.

Bruno has the following pokemon and moves:
Hitmontop level 42:
Knows Dig, Quick Attack, Counter, and triple kick. Ability is Technician and holds no item.
Hitmonlee level 42:
Knows Blaze Kick, Focus Energy, Hi Jump Kick, and swagger. Ability is reckless and holds no item.
Hitmonchan level 42:
Knows Ice Punch, Thunder Punch, Fire Punch, and Bullet Punch. Ability is iron fist and holds no item.
Machamp level 46:
Knows Rock Slide, Cross Chop, Revenge, and Foresight. Ability is no guard and holds the sitrus berry.
Onix level 43:
Knows Sand strom, earthquake, rock slide, and dragon breath. Ability is sturdy and holds no items.

The key to beating Bruno is the same as last time, use Psychic. A strong Psychic move will take out all of his pokemon except for onix in one or two hits. For onix, use a water type move to finish him off and you're on your way.

Battle 4-
The fourth battle in the elite four is against Karen, and Dark type user.

Karen has the following pokemon and moves:
Umbreon level 42:
Knows Double Team, confuse ray, faint attack, and payback. Ability is synchronize and holds no item.
Vileplume level 42:
Knows Stun Spore, Petal Dance, Acid, and Moonlight. Ability is chlorophyll and holds no item.
Murkrow level 44:
Knows Sucker Punch, Faint Attack, Pluck, and whirlwind. Ability is super luck and holds no item.
Gengar level 45:
Knows Focus Blast, Destiny Bond, Spite, and Lick. Ability is levitate and holds no item.
Houndoom level 47:

Knows Nasty Plot, Dark Pulse, Flamethrower, and crunch. Ability is flash fire and holds the sitrus berry.
Take down most of Karen's Pokemon with hard hitting attacks like Ice Beam against VIleplume and Murkrow, Water or fighting moves against houndoom, and ghost type moves against Gingar. For the Umbreon, any attack that inflicts major damage needs to be used to eliminate it quickly, before it boosts its stats too high.

CHAMPION:
The champion of HeartGold is Lance, a dragon (or flying) type user, with hard hitting Pokemon.

Lance has the following Pokemon with moves:
Gyarados level 46:
Knows Dragon Pulse, Flail, Waterfall, and Ice Fang. Ability is intimidate and holds no item.
Dragonite level 49:
Knows Thunder wave, Hyper Beam, Thunder, and Dragon Rush. Ability is innter focus and holds no item.
Dragonite level 49:
Knows Thunder wave, Hyper Beam, Blizzard, and Dragon Rush. Ability is innter focus and holds no item.
Aerodactyl level 48:
Knows thunder fang, rock slide, Aerial Ace, and Crunch. Ability is pressure and holds no item.
Charizard level 48:
Knows Air SLash, Fire Fang, Shadow Claw, and Dragon Claw. Ability is blaze and holds no item.
Dragonite level 50:
Knows Safeguard, Outrage, Fire Blast, and Hyper Beam. Ability is inner focus and holds a sitrus berry.
Lance is hard to beat, but easily done if you come prepared. Ice type moves are amazing against dragon and flying types, dealing 4x damage to all 3 of his dragonites. Ice beam will normally take them out in 1 or 2 hits. For the Charizard and Gyarados, electric attacks are super effective and 4x effective in the case of Gyarados. To take down the Aerodactyl use a water type move to take him out.
Reward:
Pokemon Champion

RED:
The ultimate Pokemon battle happens between you and red.
Red has the following Pokemon and moves:
Pikachu level 88:
Knows Volt Tackle, Iron Tale, Quick Attack, Thunderbolt. Ability is static and holds a light ball.
Lapras level 80:
Knows Blizzard, Brine, Psychic, and Body Slam. Ability is shell armor and holds no item.
Snorlax level 82:
Knows Shadow Ball, Crunch, Blizzard, and Giga Impact. Ability is thick fat and holds no item.
Venusaur level 84:
Knows sludge Bomb, giga drain, sleep powder, and frenzy plant. Ability is Overgrow and holds no item.
Charizard level 84:
Knows Flare Blitz, Air Slash, Blast Burn, and Dragon Pulse. Ability is Blaze and holds no item.
Blastoice level 84:
Knows Focus Blast, Hydro Cannon, Blizzard, and Flash cannon. Ability is Torrent and holds no item.
Red is the ultimate trainer in any Pokemon game, so beating him isn't easy. You can take my rout and just use Mewtwo to beat the crap out of every one of his pokemon, or you can do it stratigicaly.

Here is how to defeat each of his Pokemon:
Pikachu- Use ground type moves, such as Earthquake, to deal a lot of damage. When using these ground type Pokemon make sure to restore your Pokemon's health, as Pikachu will use Iron Tail.
Lapras- Electric or grass type moves are your best bet here. Use strong attacks to beat lapras, but try to lower it's defense before hand.
Snorlax- Use fighting type moves. USe the strongest fighting type moves that you can. Snorlax will mess you up if it is able to get more than 1 attack in, and make sure to use a Pokemon with high HP or Defense to prevent against giga impact.
Venusaur- Ice Type moves, like Ice Beam, will knock out venusaur faster than you could have ever imagined.
Charizard- Use rock type moves to deal 4x damage, or use a water type Pokemon with High Defense to be able to stand in against charizard's insane attack stats.
Blastoise- Electric type Pokemon are your best bet. Because of Blastoise's Blizzard, grass type Pokemon will be taken out in a flash and should avoid being used at all in this battle.

This is a pretty nice guide, not long enough to get boring, but not to short to not deliver details poorly so good job on that front. I personally wouldn't be able to write one of these, which is why when I see people like you do it I get a little jealous

Very nice guide, I like it! I don't see any problems with it, but there is one thing that bugs me...where are the Kanto Gym Leaders? Aren't they counted as major battles as well? Other than this small thing, it's great!

Nice guide, well formatted and to the point.
One major complaint though, your tips on what pokemon to use and type matchups make no sense.
Flying is neutral against falkner's pokemon so they're as good as all the other early pokemon really.
Again, flying is super effective against scyther thanks to its bug typing. They're among the best things to use against it since they resist U-turn.
Psychic moves are super effective on all of morty's pokemon thanks to their poison typing.
Steelix actually has weaknesses. Those are water, fire, fighting and ground.
There is no such thing as 1.25x effective.
Just to name a few. It's important to do your research before writing a guide so make sure to look things up more next time, that's all I needed to say.
