When I was growing up in the suburbs of sydney, I was often babysat by an old friend of my mother and her teenage daughter, named Kimberly took me to her room to introduce me to a game that she would later give to me as a parting gift when I was returning to the state of Queensland and for 18 years and counting, I still have it in my possession today, I have held onto Kirby's dreamland for as long as I can remember. I was so young back then, but I remember it well and I always look back on it with fond remembrance. Today I will be reviewing Kirby's dream land and I want to dedicate this review to Kimberly, without her i never would have been a fan of Nintendo. So thank you Kimberly where ever you are. As always, I will begin with the story.
The Story: the story line in this game boy classic is very simplistic and easy to understand, King Dedede (or triple D as his henchman Esgargoon calls him a few times in the anime, kirby right back at ya ) has stolen dreamland's food all for himself, if nothing is done, the inhabitants of this peaceful world will starve but there is one inhabitant that King Dedede didn't count on throwing the proverbial wrench into his plans.
And his name is Kirby, who has the ability to inhale enemies into his mouth and spit them back at other enemies as a highly useful star projectile Kirby can also inflate his body so he can fly (bear in mind the concept of copying enemies abilities like bomb Kirby or sword Kirby do not make an appearance in this game as it was not thought of yet) Kirby makes his way through clouds and islands and makes his way to mount dedede to save his fellow dream landers from starvation and bring the greedy stuffed penguin down a few pegs, there isn't really that much to tell as far as Kirby's dream lands story is concerned but a simplistic story for a simplistic game makes a video game so easy to understand that a toddler could understand it and that's all I have to say for the video games plot, its not too bad and its not too long.
The graphics: being a game boy game, the graphics are monochromatic and simple but put it on a game boy colour or a game boy advance the whole graphical system gets a colourful overhaul but even before that i still loved this game and I still do now. the graphics, like the rest of this game boy classic are pretty simple and good to look at, the character and inanimate objects have lovely animation as they move like the bomb kids skipping as he gets ready to throw a bomb at the little puffball that Kirby is or the dancing of Kirby and his friends that he rescues after defeating the boss of each level. so there really isn't much more to say here, moving on shall we?
The sound: the sound is simple too but its just incredible to listen to. A few of Nintendo biggest music hits came from this game including the background music for Green Greens the boss music and of course the debut of the theme music for king dedede which is by far my favorite Kirby piece of music ever and it always will be. Period. The sound kirby makes when he's sucking in enemies is always going to be part of any player who plays this game. Sometimes I wonder if kirby is just going after the food for himself given his incredible appetite but I'm getting off track here.
A games soundtrack like this comes once in a blue moon. Its music and sound effects will always be there at the back of the mind of any video gamer who plays it, I know that it did for me, I can tell you that. Sometimes I would go to my old primary school as a young boy and hum some of those tracks like green greens and King dededes theme but enough about that its time to move on. the next topic will be the addictiveness. Lets go.
The addictiveness: as simple as this game is, it certainly makes up for it in addictiveness. As a child I could never put it down. one of the key elements that was a downer for the addicting part of the game, well that would be the short length of the game you could beat it in an hour maybe less. So that was a bit of a small disappointment for me but that was probably the only disappointment. If you could get around that slight little hiccup in this game, you will find yourself playing it again from time to time but I digress so now we move onto another topic about this game, the depth and its not much but there's still a bit that's in there
The depth: you know because this game doesn't have much being simplistic style in every category i have reviewed for this game, I don't think I can get my usual over 2000 words into this review. but the depth is quite small and again simplistic. but when you beat the main game you can see King Dedede throwing a temper tantrum. Heh the little diaper baby. while he's doing that, you are given instructions to press a certain combination of buttons on the title screen and when done correctly you will unlock a second game that's slightly harder but not by much (e.g some enemies are replaced by those sea urchin looking guys) but as usual this category will be as short and simple as the game itself. so now I will move on to the next category, the difficulty.
The difficulty: I'm not gonna waste much time on this one this game is one of the easiest games you will ever play even a 2 year old could finish it i have nothing more to say on it
and so I close another review my only regret is that its a lot shorter than my other reviews sorry guys I'll see you next game for now, Arwing starfighter signing off |
