Today at 10:00 AM ET, the new Nintendo Direct arrived, and with it came the announcement of the newest mainstream Pokemon games: Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon. There had been speculation when those names were trademarked in Europe that they might either be new games or placeholder names for future titles, but now we know those are indeed the official names for the newest Pokemon games.

Additionally, you'll be able to transfer your Pokemon from the eshop versions of Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow to the Pokemon Bank, which can then be brought over to Pokemon Sun and Moon. I'm very excited about this because with the original gameboy versions, it was impossible to transfer your Pokemon from the first 2 gens to the GBA, thus destroying any chance of you playing future generations of Pokemon with the Pokemon you caught in the originals.

I personally am extremely excited about this news. It's been several years since Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire came out, so it's good to finally see some new mainstream games coming out, especially with this being Pokemon's 20th anniversary. Pokemon Sun and Moon will be coming out sometime during the holidays in 2016.

That's cool, but does that mean there's no Z or would that be after? And is it still the current Gen or is it the next one?

I can't wait to see what the Pokemon are.

Awww, now I'm really going to miss my 3DS! haha. I'll just have to listen to all of you talk about how awesome it is.  

Most underwhelming trailer I have watched in a while. Even if I hadn't had seen the leaks that were spotted yesterday I would still have been as disappointed by the presentation. Nothing was really shown other than some concept art so not much for me to get excited about.

DylanMcKaig : There was an actual trailer for it too? I haven't seen it, and can't physically see it for that matter unless it's on YouTube and I'm at school so I'll have to miss out on that stuff for a while.

zanderlex : I should have said that the direct itself was bad. The trailer was alright but nothing to get me hyped up about. Those that grew up with red and blue will probably love the trailer which is fine and I don't want to rain on anyone's excitement for the game as I will probably get the game anyway because its pokemon and I have never been disappointed with a pokemon game before.

Im really hoping this game does well. And i hope they go back to the old formula. Im not too big on the mega evolve and that type of stuff. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Beastmode64 : Same, mega evolutions are dumb in my opinion. I don't think it will happen though.

zanderlex : at this point, I doubt Z will ever come out, and yes, gen 6 is over. Serebii.net has it listed under gen VII, so that pretty much kills any chance of seeing a Pokemon Z.

EDIT: I checked the site again, and now it says gen VII? I'm guessing it is, but nothing's confirmed as of yet.

DylanMcKaig : I will agree that the direct itself wasn't that great, and it was too short, but I think we both know the games are going to be awesome because lets face it, it's Pokemon!

tgags123 : I personally think it's a pretty cool concept, but some of the Pokemon such as Mega Kangaskhan are just ridiculously OP. Also, some of the mega designs are awful (I'm talking to you Mega Pinsir!) I'm not against the concept, just some of the megas themselves.

Seriously though, that would be really cool if it was as great as Black and White 2 were. They need to bring back the Pokemon World Tournament feature, that was my favorite feature to be added to a Pokemon game since Emerald's Battle Frontier.

NintendoTails : Yeah, probably. Can't see them making Sun and Moon without having those 2 mega evolve. As far as which version I plan to get, unless the exclusive Pokemon in Sun are way better, I'll probably be going with Pokemon Moon, mainly because I've always liked looking at the moon at night, I mainly play Pokemon in the evenings, and my favorite eeveelution evolves in the night, Umbreon.

Barathemos : meh, I wouldn't say they sucked, but X and Y were laughably easy in every way and the exp share change is one of the worst changes in the history of the series, but it introduced Greninja, and the Mega Evolutions, as well as Super Training.

Call me a buzzkill but I'm honestly not that excited for the games. Could just be I'm getting tired of the Pokemon game formula and starting to find it kind of repetetive, because I felt the same way about X/Y after they released and found them to be the worst games in the series in a lot of areas. It sounds really generic. If they do something new and interesting with these iterations I might change my opinion but until then I don't see it happening.

Some initial thoughts on what the game might bring:

A return of the day and night system from the Johto games seems like a possibility since it would fit the namesake, I personally would find that interesting.  I can't imagine that Lunatone and Solrock won't be involved in some way in these games. Maybe a mega form that's exclusive to each version or something along those lines. I dislike mega evolutions since I find them to be pretty poorly implemented and somewhat game breaking a lot of the time, giving Pokemon nearly no one thought to use a spotlight is cool but it's at the cost of pretty much no one using a lot of the Pokemon that don't have mega evolutions. Really I'd hope they remove them from the games but there's no chance of that happening since I'm in a minority in disliking them.

I hate the names of the games. Like really, Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon? 
That just doesn't sound right. At all.

I know that there was a leaked set of new pokemon a few days ago and there are a couple of interesting ones so if anything I'm more excited about the new roster of pokemon than the actual games. I can't see them changing many things up from gen 6 though, especially after seeing some of the screenshots. Maybe some new battle sprites but that's about it. The region from what we've seen so far has the same graphics as ORAS.
