Super Smash Bros.

This is a game that release on the Nintendo 64, a brawling/fighting game that had revolutionized a series of games that we play on newer generation consoles. In this review, I will be covering the graphics, game play pros and cons, and the difficulty of the fighting/brawling between the most beloved characters that we have all grown up with in our childhood/adulthood gaming careers. I first picked up a copy of this game back in 1999, at the time, I was 3 years old, so, it was as if I was playing the best game in the universe. But, now that I am older, and have an understanding of what makes a good game worth playing, I feel now is the time to place my ideology of video game's worth.

At the time, this game was ahead of its' time. The three dimensional properties and graphics were considered to be well above average. It shown a great deal of both A: in depth likeness of the characters, and B: properly aligned hit boxes, so when your character's attack made contact, it wouldn't deny your character the satisfaction of doing damage to your opponent. With that stated, I shall now address some cons, as well. It is true, that they didn't have the greatest graphics to use for these games, but I feel as if they could have smoothed out some of the edgy-like look of some of the characters. Which, that is why I give the graphics a 7/10, for it was excellent graphics for the time, but, they could have smoothed out some of the polygon shapes on the character's textures.

Now, let us address the pros and cons of the game play. I will start will the pros, considering it is a decently long list. The addicting factor of difficulty settings and weapon/items to add or subtract from the matches in the game provided an unpredictability to the outcome to a match. For example, you may really kick butt on the difficulty setting of level 2-4, but, raise it to 6-9 and you might have had a really tough fight and chewed more than you could swallow, so to say. Another item to bring into such category of pros, would be the interesting character development for combat. Every character in the game specifically was, at some point, in a combatant situation in their own individual story lines. With this already developed character depth, it was quite interesting at the attacks of each individual character, and, no one character had the same moves as another, with the exception of Kirby, in a way, due to the ability to absorb and mimic another character's abilities. This made another factor of interesting game play design, for, when a character you're not used to fighting jumps into the match with you, never know if you're going to beat them.

So, let us get to the cons to the game. Repetitive. The stages are limited to a variety of roughly 7-10 stages, (excluding the campaign/single player mode, which I am not addressing in the review) and there are a very limited range of characters of only twelve possible entries, if you unlock the last four.(Captain Falcon, Luigi, Ness, and Jiggly Puff.) Another con to come to light would be how easy it is to accidentally fall off of the stages. In the game, I have found myself accidentally falling from the stage by mere 1 or 2 pixels, which is slightly annoying. That will about sum up the Cons, due to how I don't view anything else, really, to be a con, at this time.

We continue to look upon the difficulty of the brawling/fighting of the game. Within the game, you, as the player, have the power to manipulate the difficulty of the fighting via both elimination and addition of items, as well as, the option to adjust the difficulty level of the characters you fight, if you're not playing against three other friends. With these two settings, it adds challenge to the game, so you're not just going around beating every character with the most graceful ease, and instead, feel intimidation and the drive to win and defeat your opponents. You can also choose to play the game with up to three other people, besides yourself, which makes the game that much more difficult, depending on the skill and luck of each individual player. I find my friends and I competing in small tournament style competitions for who is the best at the original Super Smash Bros. All the time, which, allows for a heck of a fun time between friends, and puts in the factor of difficulty of the rivals in game.

Now, let us summarize this review. The graphics of this game had excelled a great deal, yet, there were still things that could have both been improved or fixed that the game designers either didn't notice, or didn't have the ability to improve or fix at the time. Pros of this game are replay ability, item/difficulty changing ability, and enjoyable characters. Cons of this game are repetitiveness, limited stages, limited characters, and the ease of accidental death. The difficulty is varied depending on elimination of items and/or the addition of items, as well as the CPU(Computer) player's difficulty alteration(Varies from 1-9.) and the ability to play with friends, which can have endless possibilities, depending on the luck and/or skill of your fellow players. I give this game a 9.6/10 review, and would definitely recommend this game to be played both by yourself and with friends!

Thank you for taking the time to read this review, and have a lovely day.

Sincerely,

While your review is over 900 words, I feel like I still don't know much about the game by reading your review. How do the graphics compare to other N 64 games? Is the game addictive at all? Also, state your facts straight instead of using fillers like "I am going to talk about..." Just state your pros and cons directly, or better yet makes something like

Pros: blablablabla.

Cons: blablablablabla

janus : To be honest, this is my first time making a review on something, so, if it isn't as detailed as some would like, I apologize for that. Also, I did cover the topics that I stated I was going to address, and I do not believe I said I was going to cover addictive qualities of the game.
