I've heard a lot of terrible, terrible things about Windows 10. I've also heard some good things about Windows 10 as well, and the fact that it's free is somewhat enticing. I'm thinking of upgrading just so that it'll stop nagging me to upgrade.

Why do you think there's so much hate for Windows 10? Is it because of the data collection that I have yet to see any substantial proof of? Do people just not like the new look? Please give me some more info.

I also don't understand the hatred, I mean they got rid of the Frankenstein monster of a UI that was metro and fixed so many
things wrong with windows 8 that I just don't get it.
Maybe its because:

-People are still mad about the discontinuation of 7 and XP.
-Privacy concerns... a truckload of privacy concerns.
-Some people just assume that New = Bad
-or many other reasons that I honestly don't know about. (because I'm lazy

Windows 10 is being released as a "service" that means its not even complete yet.
sure its 100% usable but updates are released eventually to improve some things and add new features
but I recommend that you upgrade simply because it improves on a lot of things that windows 8 didn't.

Good things about windows 10:
-The start menu is back! Well almost, it works just like the old one in the sense that it doesn't
take over the whole screen and a few other things
-The previously called Metro apps (Now called universal apps) Don't take up the whole screen anymore
-DirectX12 what else?
-Full compatibility with XInput controllers in the sense that they don't need drivers to work anymore.
-Microsoft Edge which is a hundred times more useful than IE
-And other things I am simply too lazy to mention.

Bad things about windows 10:
-Some features like the appstore require you to have a Microsoft account.
-Instead of the regular control panel you still get the dumbed down metro version, yeah you can still access the regular control panel
but it would be nice if they ditched the other one.
-Even more compatibility issues! (mostly with the 64-bit version)
-Microsoft Edge doesn't have extension support yet.
-The crappy default email client .
-Again, other things I am too lazy to mention.

NovemberJoy :

I've been using it for a few months now and I cant really complain about it; its a pretty good operating system.  It's certainly the update to Windows 8 that I think everyone needed.  I was hesitant at first because in my own personal opinion, Windows 7 was (and still is) a solid operating system.  From a gaming perspective though, if you own an Xbox One; the gaming app on Windows 10 is pretty cool.

I think its a very touchy subject for a lot of people which has brought out a lot of bias reviews, so I'd probably take most of the negatives with a spoon full of sugar.

I prefer it to 7 or 8 in terms of the interface but ever since the upgrade w10 starts randomly crashing sometimes which it still does and I was also unable to open the start menu for some weeks after upgrading until they released a bugfix for it several updates later.. That and there just seems to be random problems every now and then, I still feel like it's somewhat unfinished to be honest, if it weren't for glitches and bugs I'd prefer it.

That and there's also the whole deal about it apparently collecting a bunch of private information.

I got stuck with it on my new laptop and it has been buggy as hell.

I have 2 other machines still on 7 and I'm happy with the way those run.

My current laptop has been having serious issues with video drivers causing things to crash and other games to not run with the nice video card I have. I'm really hoping those get fixed soon because I'm tired of not being able to run everything I want.

do you want the list of reasons or the tl:dr version?

the list includes:

opting out of all the data gathering functions STILL lets it gather info on you and send said info to microsoft servers. this includes search related info, personal info, e-mail contents, and other things. so there goes privacy.

Cortana will be gathering you're voice print as you talk to her (oh yeah, SURE...this is to give user a better user experience. >.> like theres nothing suspicious about this at all, right? pfft) and send said info to microsoft. well, guess you'll have to be careful of talking near any computer with windows 10.

iirc it shares passwords for password protected wireless internet connections with friends and family regardless of whether or not you consent to that. security? what's that?

what else was there? uh...ads in games like Fing solitaire that you can PAY to remove (WTF microsoft?! are you so greeedy that you need ads in something like fing solitaire of all things?). oh and said info collected mentioned above will be used to issue you a personal ad related ID or somesuch so you'll receive ads tailored to you in the app store and stuff. (yep, ads as part of the OS now. yay)

OH, right right... if you're still using windows 7, vista, or 8 then theres certain system updates you need to never install if you DON'T want W10. installing these updates will allow microsoft to force a mandatory upgrade to W10 whether you want it or not.

the tl;dr verison: windows 10 is Fing spyware incarnate and an invasion of...heck, WHAT privacy? you sold your privacy to microsoft when you bought it.

i'm sure there was more but that's all i remember right offhand. i'll stick with windows 7 ty. i have no intention of selling out to this spyware OS distributing scum. it's sickening how they stoop so incredibly low to spy on they're users like that.

edit: oh yeah, there was also something about W10 scanning you're harddrive to check if you've pirated games or other stuff in an attempt to combat piracy or something. i think several big torrent sites went and banned users of W10 just for using the OS as a precautionary measure. i'd say they were over reacting but then again...i'm sure such cautious actions have saved such sites in the past even if it does seem like over reacting to something.

edit2: hey, NovemberJoy, want proof of the data gathering? heres what google shows of it:

http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/08/windows-10-doesnt-offer-much-privacy-by-default-heres-how-to-fix-it/

http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/08/even-when-told-not-to-windows-10-just-cant-stop-talking-to-microsoft/

and of course, this: https://www.google.com/#q=windows+10+data+gathering

all in the name of giving users a better user friendly experience with W10 (it's a nice PR statement for the sheeple of the world but we all know that's BS, right?

QBuckets123 : first, PLEASE use punctuation as it's hard to read what your saying otherwise. second, with windows 10, it's not your choice to upgrade or not unless you take steps to make it so manually.

It's very interesting to hear everyone's thoughts on this matter, but I'm still not sure about it. I can say, however, that all these exaggerated reports about Windows 10 privacy issues probably aren't all entirely true. Have you heard of the phrase "too good to be true"? Well, in many cases, it works in reverse as well, and something that sounds too bad to be true often isn't. Just my two cents on these replies so far.

It's been....Alright I guess. But, I never trusted Microsoft after the whole XBox One Kinect thing (yes, I',m still sore about that) and I've noticed a few weird things.

For instance, when I used to shut down my computer, it would do it instantly, but, now it takes forever and I've started to wonder if Microsoft is running something in the background.

Also, when I put up a shortcut to youtube for my mom on her account, it asked me which browser to open it in.I chose Firefox. Then, when she tried to use it a few hours later, it opened to Edge anyway! And I know that I clicked Firefox because it even open to Firefox at first. But, every use since then has been Edge. Also, just this morning we noticed that the icon for youtube on the desktop had been moved from the top to the bottom and we know nobody messed with it.Then later on it was back to the top again! So, yeah I'm not too sure about Windows 10.I'll be keeping my eye on it.And don't even get me started about the "accidental installations" thing.I still don't trust Microsoft and this isn't helping my opinion of them.

I pre-ordered an update to Windows 10 for my PC, but only had it for a week at most. My PC is a tad old for this new OS, it over-ventilated very frequently and wasn't able to run it properly, so I reverted back to 7.

Personally, I'm not a friend of all the new apps it has installed. Besides, Edge isn't any better than Chrome or Firefox in my opinion, and Cortana isn't as useful as people dreamt it would be.  I must agree with Zlinqx, for some strange reason it gives me the vibe it was released in a rush and poorly finished.

Spidey243 : Like if what you mention can't happen on 7... I've experienced even weirder things, like ghost icons that appear and vanish at will.

Let's see why we hate Win10. It is new and prone to be buggy. Not many items or software support it. It is basically a virus dressed up as an OS. It is Microsoft's version of 1984 or HAL. Yes,I know it can be disabled, but you SHOULD NOT have to worry about stuff like that. I will not upgrade, even though Win8.1 is a pain in the a$$.

I think the only reason there's hate for Windows 10 is none other than that people have opinions about different things. I think that's the only reason other than just trying to make a fuss. I personally find Windows 10 to be one of the best. I may still prefer Windows 7 a little more, but I like Windows 10 a lot. Lots of features to use that many electronics use today. If you download Windows 10 you can always go back to the original OS you had if you don't like it, by the way.

Spidey243 : that sounds rather suspicious if it only started happening recently. maybe kill the computers internet connection (turn off the router or whatever if wireless) and run antivirus then perhaps HijackThis to see what comes up?

i had some mysterious sound effects yesterday like someone randomly double clicking folders though it stopped when i killed the internet signal. nothing on the antivirus though so i suspect that might've been my headphones picking up noise from the neighbors again. (weird signal related stuff...it's kinda creepy when that happens.)

NovemberJoy : Yeah but it's also been explicitly stated by Microsoft. It's not just some dude saying stuff, Microsoft is actually doing it.

I was somehow given Win10 without my permission. This is reinforced by Forbes. Forbes, the people who took down Stephen Glass? The highly reputable and very well known newspaper?

NovemberJoy : I have Windows 10 Professional and love it as it never fails to install updates to it. All the other operating systems I have tried(Windows XP, Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Windows 8, yes, even Windows 7 Ultimate) have failed to install the updates to it or at least some of them. One thing I can't stand about operating systems is when they fail to install updates. The only other operating system that never failed to install updates was Windows 2000 Professional. To me, failing to install updates has something to do with the stability of an operating system, but then you can't trust those words, as I'm not a computer expert. My best friend is, but I'm not. Thing is, people just don't like new things, even those that might actually be better than previous versions. It has nothing to do with the new thing, it's that people like to be familiar with things and if it works out for them, they feel no need to change to that new thing.

From what I've seen, I don't want to upgrade to Windows 10. At least, not yet. There's just too many problems for me to want to upgrade right now. I currently have Windows 8.1, by the way.

Windows Update is telling me that "Your copy of Windows 10 is ready!" even though I never told it to download in the first place, which is very nice of them. If it forces me onto Windows 10 when I try to restart my computer, then I'm going to be very frustrated.

NovemberJoy : you might have unknowingly downloaded one of those system updates that allows them to do that. i remember having to block a few specific updates myself to keep that from happening on my laptop (windows 7 here). i might still know where said system updates to avoid were listed. let me check.

ah, here they are and theres several to watch out for:

http://www.megaleecher.net/Windows_7_WAT_Update_Bypass

http://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/list-of-windows-7-telemetry-updates-to-avoid.379151/

http://www.majorgeeks.com/news/story/windows_updates_to_hide_to_avoid_telemetry_or_windows_10_upgrade.html

these are for windows 7 though so you might want to check around for your version instead. still, to any W7 users looking to block W10's mandatory upgrade, these may prove helpful to read through.
